Hyde Mary (Steele) MacQueen Alexander 'Alex' Ihasz Sister Christina McMullin ******************************************************************************************************* Annabelle MacDonald Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 03/01/2010 It is with deep sadness that we regret to announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt, Annabelle MacDonald, who passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, N.S., Annabelle was the daughter of the late David and Alice (Livingstone) MacDonald. Annabelle had a strong faith and was a member of Holy Redeemer. She worked a few years at Keddy Hotel in the housekeeping department and at A&W. She enjoyed walking and was very dedicated to her family. She will always be remembered by her family as a quiet and easygoing lady. Annabelle is survived by her sister, Theresa Dalton, Sydney; and sister-in-law, Anne MacDonald, Sydney. She also survived by several nieces, nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews and many cousins. Besides her parents, Annabelle was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Maclean and twin sisters, Mary Belle and Annie Jessie at infancy, brothers, Bernard and Rodrick MacDonald. Visitation for the late Annabelle MacDonald will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 9-10:30 a.m. Funeral mass to celebrate Annabelle's life will be held Thursday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in Annabelle's memory may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund. Online condolences may be sent to www.pierfuneralhome.com. ****************************************** Robert Lavin Born in: Pembrook, Ontario, Canada Passed away in: Main-a-Dieu, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 02/01/2011 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Robert 'Bob' Lavin on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pembrook, Ont., he was the son of the late Herbert Mullis and Mary Sennett. He was employed at the National Sea Products. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Main-a-Dieu. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (Campbell); his children, Lisa Lavin, Sydney, Darren Lavin, Louisbourg, Robert Todd (Leslee) Lavin, Ontario, Wade Lavin (Monique), Sydney River. He is also survived by his sister, Leona (Ray) Colbon, British Columbia; brothers, Elroy (Yvonne) Sennett, Eddie Lavin, both of Ontario; six grandchildren, Tyler, Stephanie, Colton, Brooke, Brady, Alyssa; great-granddaughter, Lauryn; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles as well as the extended Campbell family. Besides his mother, Mary, Bob was predeceased by his sister, Eileen O'Brien, brother, James Lavin. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 13 at the S.W. (Ross) MacLean Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Clinton, Massachusetts, United States Passed away on: 03/01/2010 Gwendolyn M. (Ross) MacLean, 69, of 4 Dennis St., died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, in Clinton Hospital, after being stricken ill. She leaves her husband of 43 years, Johnston MacLean; two daughters, Kimberly S. MacKoul and her husband Michael, Millbury, MA, and Jennifer L. Elwell and her husband David, Auburn, MA; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Ryan MacKoul and Heather and Samuel Elwell; her in-laws, Mary Turner, Lancaster, MA, John and Ann MacLean, Trenton, Ont., and Kenneth and Judith MacLean, Lancaster, MA; many nieces, nephews, and close friends. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Robert MacLean. Gwen was born in Glace Bay, N.S., and raised in Reserve Mines, N.S., the daughter of John Robert and Catherine (MacLean) Ross. She was a graduate of Morrison Glace Bay High School, N.S., Class of 1959. In 1961, she relocated to Massachusetts. For 25 years, Gwen worked as office manager and bookkeeper for Res-Tech Corp. of Clinton, MA, retiring in 2002. She was a member of the Evangelical Congregational Church of Lancaster, MA and the Red Hat Society. An avid bowler, she also enjoyed knitting. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. in the McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St., Clinton, MA. Hyde Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 29/08/1924 Passed away in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 03/01/2011 It is with saddened hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Dorothy 'Dot' Hyde, 85, on Jan. 3, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital. The daughter of the late John William and Elsie May Hyde, Dorothy was born on Aug. 29, 1925, and resided in Sydney Mines. Dorothy enjoyed a good laugh and loved to tell jokes to a captive audience. She loved to sing, and was a member of the choir of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Dorothy enjoyed curling and was a member of the North Sydney Curling Club. She was an avid animal lover and regularly donated to the SPCA. Dorothy loved to read, enjoyed her crafts, and enjoyed bowling and playing bingo. Until her retirement, Dorothy was an employee of Herald Stationers in North Sydney. Anyone entering the store was treated to her beautiful and friendly smile. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Estella 'Stella' Bartlett and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers, Ronnie, Harold, Danny, George (Sonny) and sisters, Lucille, Rose and Marjorie. The family would like to thank the staff of the Northside Memorial Manor and the Northside General Hospital. We would also like to thank Yvette Gouthro and Barb MacLean for their thoughtfulness and help. Mary was the daughter of the late John Stephen Steele of Boisdale and Margaret O'Donald of Sydney. She was predeceased by her husband, George A. MacQueen; brother, John Steele and son-in-law, Sandy Muise. Mary worked at the former county court house for a period of 30 years and also, for a number of years, at Churchill School, Prime Brook. Mary was an avid reader with a keen sense of humour. She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn (Earl) Publicover, Hills Road, Ruth (Ewen) Ferguson, Prime Brook, Gail Muise, Halifax and Sharon (Frank) Prince, Dutch Brook; sons, Grant (Brenda), Hampton, N.B., Gary (Natalie), Prime Brook and Parker (Ada), Louisbourg; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ******************************************** Alexander 'Alex' Ihasz Born in: Hungary Passed away in: Akron, Ohio, United States Passed away on: 13/12/2010 The death of Alex occurred at home in Cuyahoga Falls, Akron, Ohio on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, in his 87th year. Born in Hungary, he was the eldest son of Louis and Rose (Dakai) Ihasz, Sydney. He came to Canada at the age of nine with his brother, Frank (age seven) and their mother. Their father had already arrived in Canada, a few years before. Alex is survived by sons, Rev. Gary, Bobby and Mark. He was grandfather to seven grandchildren. Family surviving in Nova Scotia are brothers, Rev. Vincent (Anne), Dartmouth, Rev. Louis (Mary), Baddeck; sister, Mary (Jack) Brill, Lower Sackville; nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents and wife, Julia (Kish) (Jan. 13, 2009); brother, Frank and wife, Rosemary. A service of Celebration and Thanksgiving was held Friday, Dec. 18 in Cuyahoga Falls, Rev. Vincent and Rev. Louis Ihasz officiated at the service. ************************************************ Sister Christina McMullin Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 02/01/2011 Sr. Christina McMullin, 95, died in Drummond Hall, Parkland Estates on Jan. 2, 2011. Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Winnifred (Boutilier) McMullin. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1934 and made her Religious Profession in 1937. Sr. Christina's ministry was in teaching. Over a period of 34 years she taught school in Roxbury, Mass., Vancouver, Ladysmith, B.C., Dartmouth, Pospect, New Waterford and Sydney. After retiring from teaching, Sister volunteered her time with patients at home and hospital. She returned to the Mount in 1995. She is survived by brothers, Henry MacMullin, New York, John MacMullin, Mississauga, Douglas MacMullin, Ottawa, Angus MacMullin, Florida; sisters, Barbara MacMullin, Ottawa, Martha Krystal, Regina and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Mary Werner and brothers, Roderick and Charles. The body will be in Caritas Residence, visitation today (Wednesday), Jan. 5 from 3-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence.
