He was the son of the late Joseph Alexander and Mary Catherine (Robinson) Hood. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Vida (Mouland) Hood; daughters, Karen (Bruce) MacKinnon, Port Hawkesbury, Krista (Ryan) Hicks, Kitchener, Ont.; his precious granddaughter, Iris Nettie Hicks; sisters, Dorothy (Daniel) O'Handley, Georges River, Joan Lewis, Halifax, Mary Lou (Darryl) Jessome, Georges River, Uncle Mullins Hood, Georges River; Aunt Aeris MacMillan, North Sydney; mother-in-law, Virtue Mouland, South Bar; sister-in-law, Joan Mouland, South Bar; several nephews, nieces and cousins. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Yetman Mouland, brothers-in-law, Bill Lewis and Les Mouland, aunts and uncles. William 'Bill' was employed as a millwright for 30 years with Stora Port Hawkesbury where he had many friends. He was a member of St. Mark's United Church and a volunteer for the Relay for Life. He was a former member of the Strait Pirates Oldtimer Hockey Club and the local skating club, where he made many fond memories. He enjoyed his Pirates hockey game on Friday nights, cheering for the Leafs, harness racing, travelling with his wife, summers in Georges River and special times with family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5 with Rev. Bob Lockhart officiating. "Always Remembered, Forever Loved" ********************************************* Shirley Delores (MacDougall) LaCombe Born in: Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 31/12/2010 Shirley LaCombe, 78, of Glace Bay, passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her daughter Shirleon 'Shirley Ann' and son-in-law, Paul Eugene 'Jeanie' Burta by her side. She will always be missed by her daughter and son-in-law for her love, guidance and special ways. Shirley will never be forgotten; she will always be remembered and loved by her two special grandsons, Jack and Jim, whom she referred to as her, 'Jack of Diamonds' and Jimmie as 'Her Heart.' She was very proud of her grandchildren, they both blessed her with three beautiful great-granddaughters, Emma, Lily and Charli, who gave her strength, pride, happiness and lots of love. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ******************************************** Paul Roderick Gouthro Born in: Dominion, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 16/11/1960 Passed away in: Dominiono, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/12/2010 We are saddened by the sudden loss of our beloved father, son, husband, brother, uncle, and friend Paul Roderick Gouthro. Paul passed away on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, while at work. Paul was employed by Nova Scotia Power as an operator at the Lingan Generating Station. Paul was born Nov. 16, 1960, the only son of Russell and Queenie (Tomiczek) Gouthro, Dominion. He was welcomed into an extended family with many aunts and uncles who adored him. The younger ones became his sister and brothers, John Michael (Andrea) Tomiczek, Ellen (Duck) MacAulay, Gregor (Elaine) Tomiczek, Victor (Norma) Tomiczek, all of Dominion. As a big brother he welcomed three sisters who will love him forever, Judi Gouthro, Dominion, Elizabeth Sammon, Glace Bay, and Meg (David) Ellsworth, Dominion. Paul also leaves behind to mourn his nieces and nephews, Katie Sammon, Daniel Gouthro, Jill Ellsworth, Dylan Sammon, and Julia Ellsworth. In 1985, Paul married his high school sweetheart, Helen Fowler. They remained friends until the end. Together they gave the world their most precious gift, his adored daughter, Katharine 'Kat'. Paul was a proud member of the Dominion Volunteer Fire Department and the Red Knights Motorcycle Club. He loved to ride his bike and did so with more skill than anybody. Paul was loved by many and he always brought a smile and a laugh wherever he went. He will always remain in our hearts. Visitation for Paul will be held today, Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Alma Layes, 69, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010. Alma was born in Glace Bay, Jan. 4, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Jim and Jennie (McEwan) Boozan. Alma loved a good cup of tea and game of bingo. She made friends wherever she went. She was a true Cape Bretoner at heart although she lived in Grande Cache, Alta. for 36 years. She was happy to retire at "home". She was a life member of the ladies auxiliary of Branch 278 Legion in Grande Cache. Alma is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Lloyd; two daughters, Brenda, Edmonton, Cheryl, Grande Cache; two sons, Jamie (Jody), Grande Cache, Andy, Saskatoon; and a number of cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alma is also survived by her sister, Audrey (Pat Burke), Toronto; brothers, Mick (Elenor), Billy (Ann), Glace Bay, Andy (Yvonne), Marmora, Ont. Besides her parents, Alma was predeceased by a son, Jamie, in infancy, also her sisters, Margie, Mary, Edie and Jean. At Alma's request, there will be no visitation. Till we meet again, Rest in Peace. **************************************** Charles MacLean Moffatt Born in: Pottle's Lake North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 10/05/1916 Passed away in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/12/2010 Charles MacLean Moffatt passed away peacefully at Harbour View Veterans' Hospital on Dec. 30, 2010. Born May 10, 1916, he was raised in Pottle's Lake, North Sydney, the son of Lillian, a homemaker, and Warren, a farmer. Like his father, Charlie worked as a farmer but made his career in the Canadian Armed Forces retiring in 1967. While in the Forces he was stationed in Newfoundland, New Mexico, Key West, Fla., Britain and North Africa. Active in his community, Charlie was a member of the Shriners, the Masons, a former member of the Eastern Star, a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church and an adherent to the Calvary Baptist Church. His hobbies of coin collecting and genealogy kept him occupied in his retirement along with service to CB Hoare Auto Parts and the Corp of Commissionaires. Charlie is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joyce (Myalls/Hannem); stepsons, Wally Hannem (Susan), John Hannem (Merri-Sue), Roland Hannem (Beth); grandchildren, Pattie, Pauline and Pam; step-grandchildren, Jane, Louise, Stacey, David, Denise, Mark, Aaron, Septh, Nicole and Bhreagh; 11 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Valda Maxwell and brother-in-law, Wally Myalls. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John James and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald. Rosie was a member of Chalmers United Church, Dominion. A witty lady with a great sense of humour, Rosie could often be seen in her garden planting roses and enjoying nature to the fullest. But mostly, Rosie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always putting her family number one on the list. She is survived by her eight daughters, Barbara McDonald, Susan MacDonald, Janice Mackie, Glace Bay, Frances Smith, Dominion, Lorna (Frank) McKinnon, Oshawa, Cynthia (Greg) MacKenzie, Saskatchewan, Wendy (Tommy) MacKenzie, New Waterford, Patricia (Brian) Goodwin, Tennessee, USA; three sons, George (Gloria), Glace Bay, Gerald (Brenda) and Ricky (Mae), Dominion. Roy was the beloved husband for 50 years to Hazel (Windsor-Olson). Roy was the son of Gordon and Susan (Crowe) Geddes of Old Barns, Truro, N.S. Left to mourn are daughter, June Mac Lean and son, Lee Geddes; stepson, Bruce (Judy) Olson; stepdaughter, Carolyn (Kerry) Waterfield and daughter-in-law, Ruthanne Geddes, as well as 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Roy was predeceased by his first wife, Madaline, sister, Freeda, brother, Stewart, and a sister-in-infancy. Most recently, he was predeceased by his youngest son, Robert Geddes and grandsons, Benjamin 'Ben' Geddes and David Mac Lean. Roy was one of the founding members of the Golden K Kinsmen Club and Spanish River Seniors Club. Roy was a faithful member of First United Church where he held several volunteer positions including Clerk of Session and Elder. He was also a member of Club 55, Riverside Seniors Club, Steelworkers and Pensioners Club, and Club 105. A carpenter and cabinetmaker by trade, Roy leaves behind many beautiful pieces of furniture, cabinets, ornaments, and wooden toys that he hand crafted. He worked his trade at Schurmans (PEI), Halldays (Truro), JW Stephens (Sydney) and finally retired from Read Lumber in Sydney. At this time the family wish to send a heart-filled thank you to the staff at Harbourstone for the meticulous care and attention paid to Roy during his stay. Cremation has taken place. Gosse Born in: Belle Island, Newfoundland, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 31/12/2010 It is with deep regret the family of Selby 'Syl' Gosse announce his passing Dec. 31, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Belle Island, N.L., he was the son of the late Richard and Levine May (Neal) Gosse. He was employed as a steelworker, retiring from Sydney Steel after 43 years of service. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards, darts and bowling. As the temperatures became warmer each year, he looked forward to moving to his summer home in Sangaree, where he would go fishing, gardening, pitching horseshoes and enjoyed the the outdoors and company of friends and neighbours stopping by. He is survived by two brothers, Jim (Emily) and Granville (Elizabeth), Mount Pearl, N.L.; sisters, Doris Normore, Belle Island, and Rose (Alex Peddle), Louisport, N.L. and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his niece and caregiver, Lorraine Mouland and extended family, Marion, David, Justin and Sarah Humphrey, Philip, Pam, Amy (Laurent Jeunet) and Rebecca Mouland, Brian and Avery Mouland and Barbie and Patrick and his beloved dog Nikki. Born in Modena, Pennsylvania, 1908, and moved from the United States to make her home in Nova Scotia, with her late husband, Dr. A.R.W. Murray, of Auckland, New Zealand. Together they served under the Atlantic Baptist Convention for over 50 years. She is survived by her grandsons, David, Paul (Catherine) and Timothy Smith; and great-grandchildren, Stephani (Ryan Mitchell), Calgary; Scott and Jonathon, of Halifax; brother-in-law, Dr. Gordon Murray (Mildred) of Grosse Pointe, MI. Esther was predeceased by her husband, (Rev.) Dr. Alexander Murray and her daughter, Lorraine (Smith). Esther 'Grandmum' was well loved, and lived her life as a true Christian. Her quick-wit, faith in God, and wonderful stories, made her a person to remember. Cape Breton was her true home. She will be fondly remembered for the summer cottage in South Haven overlooking the beautiful St. Ann's Bay, with her vegetable gardens bordered by wild lupins, and her many famous Kelly's Mountain Scarecrows.
