Roy Francis Burke Erin Blondeau Gordon Archibald Ferguson Augustus 'Gussie' Seward Sr. Lillian Morrison Garfield 'Gar' Parsons ******************************************************************************************************* Roy Francis Burke Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 23/04/2011 It is with profound sadness that I announce the death of my father, Roy Francis Burke, who passed away Saturday, April 23, 2011. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Sarah and James Burke. Roy was recently predeceased by his adored wife, Vivian Charlotte, never apart for over 68 years, now together again. For over 40 years, Roy was employed by the Sydney Steel Corp. in the electrical department. Roy was the father of three children, two sons, James and Donald and daughter, Margaret. In his youth, Roy was a natural athlete excelling in such sports as hockey as well as baseball and bowling. Roy was an avid outdoorsman especially as a hunter and fisherman. At this time a great deal of thanks must go out to the VON whose dedication to their clients knows no bounds - Roy thanks you all especially Helen and Lois. I would like to thank Dr. Glen Gracie of Sydney Family Practice for all his care and compassion given to dad. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment will be held at a later date. Erin was born in Halifax on Nov. 1, 1994. She has lived in Cole Harbour throughout her life and was a student at Auburn Drive High School. Erin was a friend to all she met, with an infectious smile and an enormous heart. Her goal was to find something to smile about every day and live life in the moment. Erin has been living with cancer since 2007 and she never let the disease define who she was. She enjoyed camping with her family and friends in P.E.I. every summer and she was inseparable from her best friend, her mom. She had a unified and wonderful group of close friends that walked beside her in the last months of her battle, their love and support kept her strong. She is survived by her mother, Karen, father, Phillip and her brother, Sam; grandmothers, Marion Blundon, New Waterford, Martha Blondeau, Sydney, and special grandmother, Sandra Sellars, Toronto; and by many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Stan Blundon and Jules Blondeau. "Hold a true friend with both your hands." ************************************ Gordon Archibald Ferguson Born In: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 25/04/2011 On April 25, 2011, our lives changed forever with the loss of a wonderful husband, father, 'poppy,' brother, uncle and friend. Gordon Archibald Ferguson passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and comfort of his family at Wentworth Court, Harbourstone. Gordon was one of 11 children born to the late William and Margaret Ferguson on June 14, 1934. Born and raised in Sydney Mines, 'Fergie' worked for Modern City Dairy before becoming a pipefitter, working various construction jobs. He then joined the Sydney Mines Police Department where he worked until retirement. During this time he received a Certificate of Commendation for an act of great merit in providing assistance to others in a selfless manner by the Governor General of Canada. Fergie was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and an active member in the community, including Christmas parade and the food bank. He could often be found joking with the girls at Tim Hortons accompanied by friends, Stan and Peter. A gentle giant, with a keen wit, Fergie loved nothing more than to be in the company of his family and friends, belting out a tune or gliding across the dance floor. "Poppy's Taxi Service" was readily available to his grandchildren, a job he delighted in. Fergie is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty (Dearing); and "Daddy's Girls," Donna (William) Pero, Ruthann March (Stewart MacKinnon), Kelly (Darren) Hodder, and Danielle (Peter) Wyman and grandchildren, Zach, Chelsea and Julianna Pero, Kayla and Marley Hodder and Sadie Wyman. He is also survived by brothers, Bill (Betty), Bruce (Yvonne) and sister, Dru Potter; brothers-in-law, Sandy MacLeod, Danny Lewis, Jack Evans, Dick (Clara), Greg (Sylvia) and Reg (Joanne) Dearing; sister-in-law, Bernice Ferguson; mother-in-law, Ruth Dearing; as well as many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Rod (Gladys), George (Alma) and Donnie, sisters, Christine (Mike) MacNeil, Peggy MacLeod, Anna Lewis and June Evans, father-in-law, Bernard Dearing, son-in-law, Allan March and nephew, Bernie Dearing. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, April 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 29 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, at 2 p.m. with Rev. You are my Sunshine, my only Sunshine... ************************************** Augustus 'Gussie' Seward Passed Away In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 24/04/2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gussie Seward on April 24, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. His loving family was by his side throughout his battle with cancer. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Burrows) Seward of Glace Bay. He worked as a miner in his early years and then as a construction worker and was a member of the Labour Union Local 1115 until he retired. Gussie lived in Glace Bay all his life, was a quiet man who loved to read and there was always a novel or newspaper by his side. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gertrude Mary 'Tootsie' (Lynk); his only daughter, Mary (Ira) Cathcart; sons, Gussie (Irene) Seward and John (Leona) Seward, as well as his grandchildren, Kathy (Chris) Murphy, Stephen Cathcart, Alex Seward, Tessa Seward and Conor Seward, and one great-grandchild, Emily Murphy, whom he loved all so dearly. He is also survived by two sisters, Marie Coleman and Martha (Herman) Vringer and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Wilfred, Anthony, Frank and John, as well as sister, Georgina Mills. In honouring Gussie's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. To express condolences to the family, please go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. *************************************** Sr. Lillian Morrison Born In: Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 26/04/2011 Sr. Lillian Morrison, formerly Sr. Joseph Leonard, 91, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany Motherhouse, on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, in the 69th year of her religious life. In 1940, Lillian entered the Sisters of St. Martha and professed perpetual vows in August 1945. Sr. Lillian lived in community and served in both Eastern and Western Canada. Her main area of service was health care. In 1951, she graduated (RN) from St. Martha's School of Nursing. Sister did post graduate work in obstetrics at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, obtained a diploma in psychiatric nursing from Seton Psychiatric Hospital, Baltimore Md., and a certificate in hospital organization and management from the Catholic Hospital Association. She served in five different hospitals and was also director of Bethany Infirmary. For eight years Sr. Lillian lived at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, ministering in the pastoral care department. Besides health care, Sr. Lillian gave a variety of services, including some homemaking. She was community leader in three different Martha convents. Born in Mulgrave, N.S., Sr. Lillian was the eldest of seven children of the late Allan and Margaret (Strachan) Morrison. Besides her parents, Sr. Lillian was predeceased by three sisters, Monica Lahey, Annie Campbell and Margaret Houle, and a brother, John. She is survived by her sister, Violet DeCoste, Mulgrave; and brother, Stephen, Calgary, Alta. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Thursday, April 28 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, April, 29 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Gar Parsons passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Gar was born on Scaterie Island and was the son of the late James and Rosanna (Trimm) Parsons. Gar worked at Nat Seas in Louisbourg for over 30 years. Gar is survived by his special nephew and best friend, Bernie (Juanita) Steele, sister, Sarah (Gord) Miller, brother, Jim (Helen) Parsons, special friend, Bonita Clarke, extended family (The Steele's), Mira Gut. Gar will also be sadly missed by his special friends at 12 Minto Street where he resided. Gar was a member of Army Navy, Unit 246, Sergeant's Mess where he enjoyed his Toronto Maple Leaf hockey games. He was also a member of Branch 3 Wednesday Cribbage League. Besides his parents, Gar was predeceased by a sister, Susie, brothers, Fred, George, Joey, Billy, Ralph and Jack. Visitation for Gar Parsons will be held Thursday, April 28, 2011, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Leo's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Bill Rankin officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall, all are welcome. Donations in Gar's memory may be made to a charity of choice.
