Lionel Walsh, SFM Allan McDonald Roy Burke Sarah 'Sally' MacLeod-Hayward ******************************************************************************************************* Florence 'Flossie' O'Handley Back to Cape Breton Post Passed Away In: Dominion, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 28/04/2011 It is with deep sadness the family of Florence O'Handley regrets the passing of a dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on April 28, 2011, at the regional hospital, Sydney, where she died peacefully in the presence of her family. Flossie was a longtime resident of the town of Dominion and was one of the first crosswalk guards on Mitchell Avenue, where she guided a multitude of children for 10 years to the elementary school on Commercial Street. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed her weekly card games. In 2004 she moved to Ottawa and lived with her daughter Debbie (Ron) Campbell where she enjoyed making new friends. In 2009 she returned and lived with Debbie in Sydney. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil O'Handley in 2004, her parents, John and Mauge (Stubbert) O'Brien, Gardiner Mines, a brother, Robert O'Brien, sister-in-law, Anna and infant brother, Gerald. She is survived by sons, Danny (Margie), Dominion, and Cecil Jr., Glace Bay; daughters, Debbie Campbell, Sydney, and Carmella, Ontario; also a special friend, Ron, Ottawa. There are eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Georgie (Hartigan) Campbell, New Waterford; brother, Doug (Sally) O'Brien, Gardiner Mines. Visitation will be in Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of life funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday in St. Eugene's Church, officiated by Fr. Daniel Boudreau. Burial in the parish cemetery. Email condolences to jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca. ************************************ George Gregory Gerrior Born In: Johnstown, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Johnstown, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 27/04/2011 It is with great sadness that we, the family of George, announce his passing Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Born in Johnstown, C.B., he was the son of Mary Catherine (Campbell) Gerrior and the late Joseph Gerrior. He was a lifelong, active member of Sacred Heart parish in Johnstown. For 39 years, George worked as a professional driver for Seaboard Transport Group. Over the years on the road, his work gave him the opportunity to establish many friendships across Cape Breton Island. When he wasn't driving, he took every opportunity to enjoy get-togethers with family, music and friends. He could often be found in the yard working at some of his favourite pastimes; landscaping or gardening. He took great pride in his home on the hill and loving family within. He'll be remembered for the ease in which he smiled, his quiet and gentle way and his ability to say so much with so little. George is survived by his wife, Mary Anita (Campbell) Gerrior; children, Yvette (Ashley) Bouchie, Greg and Andrea. He is also survived by his mother; four sisters, Patricia Mc Namara, Annie (Pius) White, Mary Josephine (Terry) Mc Namara, Jean (Blair) Mc Namara and his twin brother, Neil. He will be missed greatly by all his family including many nieces and nephews; and especially his two granddaughters, Madeleine Bouchie and Georgia Gerrior. Visitation will take place in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 26 Centennial St., St. Peter's, Saturday, April 30 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, May 2 in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Johnstown, with Fr. Lionel Walsh, SFM Born In: Allan's Island, Newfoundland, Canada Born On: 29/12/1929 Passed Away In: Scarborough, Ontario, Canada Passed away peacefully, at the age of 81, at the Scarborough General Hospital. Born Dec. 27, 1929, in Allan's Island, N.L., where he received his early schooling. In the 1950s his family moved to Dingwall, Cape Breton, N.S., where he spent many summers but over the years he returned as often as possible to his "beloved rock". Fr. Lionel taught school for a few years before joining the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society. He completed studies in philosophy and theology and is a graduate of both St. Francis Xavier Seminary and St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto. He was ordained a priest for the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society in Antigonish, N.S. on Dec. 21, 1957, and then missioned to the Dominican Republic, where he served most of his 54 years of priesthood in the parishes in Azua, Bani, Monte Plaza, Yamasa, El Seibo and Mantanzas. From 1967-1971 he returned to Canada to serve as director of the Scarboro Missions Formation House in Antigonish, N.S. at his beloved St. Francis Xavier University from which he graduated. Fr. Lionel was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Frederick Walsh and his brother, Andre. He is survived by sisters, Sr. Mary Walsh, RSM, Mercy Convent, St. John's, N.L., Sr. Margaret Walsh, O.L.M., Toronto, Denise (Fox) of Montreal and Charlotte (Fraser) of Baddeck, N.S. Due to ill health he returned from the Dominican Republic to Canada in 2003. Fr. Lionel was a wonderful pastoral man, always listening intently to the plight of the other person. He had a special love for the poor treating all with dignity and respect. He will be sadly missed by his sisters and all of his nieces and nephews and the extended family as well as by the priests and lay missioners at Scarboro Missions. Visitation will be at Scarboro Mission, 2685 Kingston Rd. (at Brimley), Scarborough, today (Friday, April 29) from 7-9 p.m. Wake service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Resurrection on Saturday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy Cemetery. In his memory, donations may be made to Scarboro Missions ************************************** Allan McDonald Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 27/04/2011 Allan McDonald, 93 of 69 Stuart St., Sydney, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Allan M. and Sarah (MacIsaac) McDonald. He was a member of the Catholic community of Immaculate Heart and St. Joseph parish, Sydney. He was employed with Canadian National Railway until his retirement. He served overseas in the R.C.A.F. as an aircraft electrician. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Calnon) McDonald, whom he married June 6, 1945 in England; by two sons, Allan G., Robert F. and daughter, Diane M., all of Sydney; grandchildren, David, Alberta and Robert and Melissa, Sydney. Allan was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Allan was predeceased by brothers, Malcolm, Charlie, Bernard, Wilfred; two infant brothers, A.J. and John; sisters, Evelyn, Celia, Mary Rose and Margaret. Visitation for Allan McDonald will take place today (Friday) at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church with Rev.
