Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Ernest Parks, Mira Gut, formerly of Boularderie, and Mary Donovan, Sydney Mines. He is survived by his daughter, Courtney, Georges River; sister, Sharon Ann, Boularderie; stepmother, Evelyn; stepfather, Harley; stepbrother and best friend, Scott; stepbrother, Freddy; nieces, Meighan, Laura and Alicia; and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Laura, paternal grandparents, Daniel and Elizabeth Parks, and his maternal grandparents, Jim and Emma Donovan. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial at a later date. Drakes Born In: Grand Bank, Newfoundland, Canada Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 06/04/2011 We regret to announce the passing of our dear father, brother and friend, Reuben Drakes, a resident of the Northside Guest Home, and formerly of Clifford Street, North Sydney. Reuben died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Grand Bank, N.L., he was the son of the late Onslow and Annie Drakes. Reuben worked aboard Marine Atlantic vessels for most of his life, retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Marine. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Compton, Twillingate, N.L.; two grandchildren, Scott and Renee; his brothers, Norman Drakes, Grand Bank, N.L., and Onslow, of Ontario; several nieces and nephews; as well as his close friends and caregivers, Austin and Sheila Pyke. He was predeceased by his wife, Harriet (Rose) Drakes and his sister, Frances. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held Sunday, 3 p.m. from the W.J. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. ************************************ John Hector Mac Kenzie Born In: Church Road, Boularderie, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 06/04/2011 We regret to announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Hector Mac Kenzie. Hector passed away peacefully in Harbour View Hospital where he had been a resident for the past two years. Born on Church Road, Boulardarie, he was a son of the late Dan Murdock and Annie Mae (MacDermid) MacKenzie. Hector served with the Canadian Army RCEME and was a veteran of the Second World War. For most of his life he was a resident of Millville. He worked for the Department of Highways for many years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. Hector was a member and Elder of St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d'Or, and a member of the Florence Legion No. 83. He was also a member of the Royal Oak Lodge No. 85, the Senior & Pensioners Club in Bras d'Or, and a former member of the Bras d'Or Wildlife Association. Hector is survived by his daughters, Beverly (Tony) Millar-Derr, Vernon, B.C., and Joan (Devlin) Vickers, Millville; grandchildren, Jim, Holly, Suzanne, Patricia, Darren and Scott; great-grandchildren, Caroline, Darlene, Joey, Kaitlyn, Juliana, Bradley, Joshua, Krista, Merrin, Mitchell, Isaac and James; great-great-grandson, Brody; brothers, Donald, Hunters Mountain, Rae, Hamilton, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Thelma Cooke, Carrie and Ruth MacKenzie. Besides his parents, Hector was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Hadley) in 2003, brothers, Harold, Bob, Kenneth and Murdock, sisters, Mary MacAulay and Agnes MacKillop. Born in Channel, N.L., he was the son of the late Phillip and Rebecca (Buttrey) Francis. Arthur worked as a purser aboard Marine Atlantic vessels for most of his life, retiring from the Atlantic Freighter in 1992. He was a former member of the Canadian Navy, and a veteran of Iraqi war, "Desert Storm" serving with the Merchant Marines. He was a member of Branch #19 Royal Canadian Legion, the Cape Breton Naval Veterans and St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Arthur is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nellie (Anderson) Francis; his sons, Glenn Francis, Derek (Carol Ann); his daughters, Sue Ann (Jason) Bernon, Doreen (Blanford) Billard; his daughter-in-law, Sonja Francis; his grandchildren, Dejiah Lynn Francis, Derek D. Born in Sydney Mines on Oct. 20, 1937, Eddie was the son of the late Edwin and Margaret (Rateau) Bailey. He is survived by his loving 'Sweetsie' Ella (Woods); daughter, Darlene (David); grandson, Tristan, Halifax; stepson, Kenny (Jennifer); brother, John (Marlene), North Sydney; sisters, Barbara (David) Martin, Sydney Mines and Sheila Luker, George's River, and several nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Chubbs Forrest, and Jimmy MacIntyre, for the kindness and friendship shown to Eddie over the years. Besides his parents, Eddie was predeceased by a sister, Betty MacIntyre and brothers, Joseph, Claudie and Henry. At Eddie's request, there will be no visitation. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfunerlahome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ***************************************** John Ernest Pierre (Died April 5, 2011) John Ernest Pierre 81, Sydney On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, John Ernest Pierre passed away peacefully after a brief hospitalization, following a long, courageous battle with leukemia. Born in Sydney in 1930, he was the son of the late Archibald and Catherine Pierre. He was a former employee of the City of Sydney Works Department until his retirement in 1993. Previously residing on Prince Street he lived with his daughter, Susan on Horne's Road, since the death of his loving wife, Margaret in 1996. John was a quiet, gentle man who was very easy-going and well loved by all who knew him. He was an avid bowler and a member of many leagues over the years. He was quite often awarded prizes, not only for his bowling skills, but for his good sportsmanship. He loved to tease, and was often on the receiving end as well as the giving end of many gag gifts. His passion for playing cards was evident, whether it was a friendly game at home, or a more serious one of tarabish or 45s, organized by various community groups. His saying was "win a lot, lose a few" Surviving are his seven children, Bob (Wendy), Dutch Brook, Charlie (Lena), Ball's Creek, Cathy (Alan) Coombs, Winnipeg, Suzan (late Michael) Holland, Horne's Road., Rita, Horne's Road, Wayne (Maxine), Mira, Patricia (Clarence) Mollons, Sydney and a very close friend, his "other daughter", Eileen (Steven) Gillis. He also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are his brothers, Joe and Archie and his sister, Reccie (Bill) Appleton. He will also be dearly missed by his companion for the past number of years, Mary Leonard; as well as John Larade and Mary Campbell, who prepared and served his breakfast, just the way he liked it, and became very dear friends to him. John will be truly missed by many friends, nieces, nephews, in-laws and other extended family. Besides his parents and wife, John was predeceased by his brothers, Scotty and Roddy and his sisters, Greta, Betty and Eileen and son in-law, Michael. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday April 8, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens. Her 101 years were dedicated to the principles of a sound mind and a sound body and the education of the young. She was predeceased by her husband John Angus, by her parents James and Anastasia (Prendergast) Borden, by sisters Agatha, Monica and Mary, by her brothers, Gussie, Jamie, Tom, Bernard, Robert, Bill and Wilfred and by grandchildren Anne Monica and Michael. She is survived by daughters Mary B. and Jane, by sons John, Angus, Neil, Wilfred and Kenzie and by grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Cremation has taken place with no visitation at her request. A memorial mass in her honour and interment will be held at Sacred Heart Parish in Johnstown this summer followed by a celebration ceilidh at Mary B.'s cottage.
