Born in Sydney in 1930, he was the son of the late Archibald and Catherine Pierre. He was a former employee of the City of Sydney Works Department until his retirement in 1993. Previously residing on Prince Street he lived with his daughter, Susan on Horne's Road, since the death of his loving wife, Margaret in 1996. John was a quiet, gentle man who was very easy-going and well loved by all who knew him. He was an avid bowler and a member of many leagues over the years. He was quite often awarded prizes, not only for his bowling skills, but for his good sportsmanship. He loved to tease, and was often on the receiving end as well as the giving end of many gag gifts. His passion for playing cards was evident, whether it was a friendly game at home, or a more serious one of tarabish or 45s, organized by various community groups. His saying was "win a lot, lose a few" Surviving are his seven children, Bob (Wendy), Dutch Brook, Charlie (Lena), Ball's Creek, Cathy (Alan) Coombs, Winnipeg, Susan (late Michael) Holland, Horne's Road., Rita, Horne's Road, Wayne (Maxine), Mira, Patricia (Clarence) Mollons, Sydney and a very close family friend, his "other daughter", Eileen (Steven) Gillis. He also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are his brothers, Joe and Archie and his sister, Reccie (Bill) Appleton. He will also be dearly missed by his companion for the past number of years, Mary Leonard; as well as Joann Larade and Mary Campbell, who prepared and served his breakfast, just the way he liked it, and became very dear friends to him. John will be truly missed by many friends, nieces, nephews, in-laws and other extended family. Besides his parents and wife, John was predeceased by his brothers, Scotty and Roddy and his sisters, Greta, Betty and Eileen and son in-law, Michael. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, April 8, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens. Her 101 years were dedicated to the principles of a sound mind and a sound body and the education of the young. She was predeceased by her husband John Angus; by her parents James and Anastasia (Prendergast) Borden; by sisters Agatha, Monica and Mary; by her brothers, Gussie, Jamie, Tom, Bernard, Robert, Bill and Wilfred and by grandchildren Anne Monica and Michael. She is survived by daughters Mary B. and Jane; by sons John, Angus, Neil, Wilfred and Kenzie and by 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place with no visitation at her request. A memorial mass in her honour and interment will be held at Sacred Heart Parish in Johnstown this summer followed by a celebration ceilidh at Mary B.'s cottage. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Reid of Sydney. Helen was a hairdresser by trade. She enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family. Helen was a proud graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at NSCC Marconi Campus. Helen sold baked goods and chocolate from her home. She was survived by her friend and father of her children Robert 'Snootter' Leyte; her three children, whom she loved dearly, Ashley, Robert and Gregory Leyte; her sister, Marion MacLellan (Darrell Tobin); brothers, Gordon Reid (Joyce Paul), Manning Reid; brother-in-law Angus; and mother-in-law Sylvia Leyte. Among many cousins, nieces and nephews, she will be especially missed by cousins, who spent numerous hours with her, Lorraine, Ann, Cathy and Elaine. She was predeceased by her brother, Billy Reid. Born in MacKinnon's Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Mombourquette) Bonaparte. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Mission, MacKinnons Harbour. Mom is survived by her companion, Leo Maclean; son, Leonard (Cathy), Chicago; daughters, Mae (John Angus) Matheson, Little Narrows, Ann (Brian) Whittleton Edmonton, Marguerite (Duncan) MacNeil MacKinnon's Harbour, Sadie (Charles) MacDonald, Ottawa Brook. She will be sadly missed by her 11 grandchildren, Tabitha, Byron, Donna, Melissa, Sue-Ann, Lenise, Brendan, Patty, Charlene, Julie and Alicia; her 15 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Michael (Shortie) MacNeil and many nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her family. Mom worked at the Highland Village Museum, as an interpreter, where she made many friends and will be fondly remembered for her quick wit and sense of humour. While at home mom enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzles and listening to fiddle music. She loved seeing her regular visitors, and truly enjoyed Gregory's biscuits. Mom also spent a lot of time with her special friend Darcy, with whom she shared many apples. The body is resting in St. Columba Church, lona on Saturday, April 9, 2011, with visitation hours 12:30-3:30p.m. The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011, in St. Columba Church with Rev. Born in St. Margaret's Village, Victoria County on April 20, 1921 she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Lena (Capstick) LaRusic. She graduated from Normal College in 1941 and later taught in Bay St. Lawrence, Dingwall, Ingonish and Washabuck. She was a founding member of the Home and School Association in Dingwall and Washabuck. In later years she worked at the Oyster Farm in Portage, Victoria County. She was a dedicated community member who gave generously of her time as a member of the Holy Rosary Altar Society and Washabuck Community Centre and was a member of the St. Columba Parish CWL. She was well known for her Scottish oatcakes and generous donation of baked goods to community events. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and taught sewing in the community for several years. She was awarded "Volunteer of the Year" in 1993. She was an avid card player and provider of many sets of homemade mittens and socks for her children and grandchildren. She rooted for the Blue Jays and was an avid fan of curling and golf. Born in Newfoundland to the late Michael and Mary Louise (Snow) King, she lived all her life in Birch Grove. Mary was a lifetime member of MacKay Memorial United Church and was an active member of the UCW. She was also a member of the True Blue Lodge. Throughout her life she remained committed to her community, donating her time and talents to numerous organizations, charity events and social functions. Her greatest joys in life were walking, visits with friends and family, picking berries, Monday night bingo club and Saturday night bingo and playing the organ. Mary was well known for her molasses cookies, homemade dinner rolls and her wild strawberry jam. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Verne; daughter, Gail; brothers, Bob, Al, Bill and sisters, Dorothy, Julia and Hazel. Left to mourn are her daughter, Ferne; son, Roy (Elinor); grandson, Shea (Sherry); granddaughter, Sarah (Kevin); special great-granddaughter, Alli; sister, Laura and brothers, Edward and Elmer; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. A loving Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Pearl was born in Lamaline, Nfld. on May 3, 1926. She, along with her parents and siblings emigrated to North Sydney in 1927. Pearl was the daughter of the late Ernest and Lucy (Crews) Hillier. She was a homemaker at heart and prior to her illness took great pride in her home and in providing a hot meal on the table for her family and anyone else who needed a good home-cooked meal. Her door was always open to the neighborhood kids who seized every opportunity to share a meal with her children. She was an inspiration to her family; strong, courageous, and the rock that we all leaned on. She had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. We will always remember her silliness and her laughter.
