O'Toole Born In: Millville, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 20/06/1930 Passed Away In: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Passed Away On: 08/04/2011 Peacefully passed away, in the arms of his family at St. Peter's Hospital, Hamilton, Ont., on Friday, April 8, 2011, at the age of 80. Born in Millville, C.B., June 20, 1930, the son of the late Timothy and Dollie (MacAskill) O'Toole. A retiree of Dofasco with more than 35 years service, Gordon enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed his annual vacation with his family to Cape Breton. Gordon and his wife Mary made many friends at the Old Tyme Fiddle Club, blue grass dancing and horse racing. Gordon was a kind and gentle soul, loved by all who knew him. Predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Dollie O'Toole; his wife, Mary (Rose) in December 2006; brother, Roddie in 1985; sister-in-law, Judy O'Toole; brothers-in-law, John Glinski, John Pate and Lloyd Campbell. He will be sadly missed by daughter, Kelly (Ted Louche), Bedford, N.S.; son, Shawn, Ottawa, Ont.; three brothers, Wilfred (Mary), John (Josephine), Hamilton, Ont., Bill, Millville, N.S.; five sisters, Jean (George) Baker, Niagara Falls, Ont., Annie, Oakville, Ont., Marjorie (Paddy) Bennett, Brantford, Ont., Ida Glinski, Ocean View Nursing Home, Eastern Passage, N.S., Dolena Campbell, Millville, N.S.; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Kind and loving father of Raymond (Marillian), Roderick, Rita (Gil), Donnie (Veronica). Devoted grandfather of 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late David and Sarah A. (MacDonald) Gillis. She was a former member of Sacred Heart parish. Theresa was employed for many years both at St. Rita Hospital and Sydney Credit Union. Prior to this, she also worked for Art Lipton. She was an avid visitor to New York and was a true cat lover. She is survived by a sister, Geraldine 'Gerry', of Sydney and by several cousins. Theresa was predeceased by her brother, Sandy. There will be no visitation for the late Theresa Gillis. Edward Johnston (Died April 17, 2011) April 19, 1924 - April 17, 2011 Edward Johnston died at his home in Kemptville, Ontario, on April 17th after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary (Mamie) Johnston, six children and their spouses and nine grandchildren: Mary [Albert Dufresne] of Stittsville, ON; Michael [Katherine and sons Ormond and Brandon] of Sydney, N.S.; Karen [ Rob Filipkowski and son Ben] of Burns Lake, BC; Bernadette [ Tom Edwards and children Connor and Alyson] of Carleton Place, ON; Ormond [ Linda and children Hannah and Michael] of Oxford Mills, ON; Katherine [ Ken Storen and children Kate and Devin] of Barrhaven, ON. Edward was born in Sydney, NS in April 1924. He served in the Canadian Army, Grenadier Guards, in World War II. On his discharge in 1946 he returned to Sydney where he went to work with DOSCO's steel plant. Active in his union, Local 1064 of the United Steelworkers of America, he served on education committees and as an executive officer. He was President of the Cape Breton Labour Council for five terms and the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour for six consecutive terms. In 1964 he joined Canadian Labour Congress, as Representative, in its Sydney office. In 1970 he moved to Moncton as Atlantic Regional Director of Organization and in 1975 he was appointed National Director of Organization for the CLC in Ottawa. He retired in 1988. During his years in Sydney, Edward was actively engaged in service though civic organizations, educational ventures and in development of social and community programs. He was elected Alderman for seven terms and was an officer of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. Ed was frequently appointed as an adviser to the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland Governments on matters related to labour and municipal government issues. Edward was a founding member and Co-Chairman of the Nova Scotia Joint Labour-Management Study Committee associated with Dalhousie University's Institute of Public Affairs. For his contribution to civic life and leadership in organized labour, he holds honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Dalhousie University and St Francis Xavier University. In retirement he remained active in industrial relations as well as social and political activities. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kemptville. Visitation at Grant Brown Funeral Home Rolston Chapel, 805 Prescott St, Kemptville on Wednesday, April 20th from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Funeral and interment will be held at a later date in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
