Sparrow Florence Oakley Arnold 'Pius' Sampson ******************************************************************************************************* Kathleen 'Kathy' Sullivan Passed away in: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 04/10/2010 Kathleen 'Kathy' Sullivan, 42, of Glace Bay died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010 in Toronto, Ont. She is survived by her mother, Kathleen 'Kay' Smith (formerly Sullivan) and Jerry Smith; she is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles who thought of her more as a sister than a niece. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Bob and Lillian Sullivan, New Aberdeen. Kathy will we be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Cremation took place Oct. 12, 2010 in Ontario. A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at 11 a.m. St. John's Church, New Aberdeen. ****************************** Anne Portenier Born in: Southside Boularderie, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 05/05/1925 Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 15/10/2010 It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Anne Josephine Portenier, on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Southside Boularderie on May 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Flora (MacIntyre) Gillis. Anne is survived by her two daughters, Diane Portenier, Cheticamp, Francine Portenier (Bill Gardner), Ottawa; son, Mickey Portenier (Laurie), London, Ont.; her five grandchildren, Michael (Maureen), Melanie (Paul Clarke), Nathalie, Montana and Cameron; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Michaela. Anne is also survived by her sisters, Florence (John) Henderson, Ottawa, Sadie (Taffy) Williams, Southside Boularderie, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her one brother, Ernie and two sisters, Margaret and Rhoda. Anne will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Visitation for Anne Portenier will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joachim Church, Southside Boularderie, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the Southside Boularderie Firehall. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. *************************************** David MacDonald Passed away in: Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 14/10/2010 With courage, dignity, grace, and his family by his side, David peacefully lost his 10 year long battle with cancer on October 14, 2010, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. David is survived by his friend, companion, loving wife Anne Marie and his loving children David (Amanda), Vicki (Kevin Kuniski), his stepchildren, Melanie (Doug MacDonald), and Kimberly (Rob Coates). David was 'gramps' to David (kid kid), Ryan and Ashleigh. David was 'grumps' to Chelsey, Tray, Dylan, Douglas, Brody, Sarah, Trinity, Zachary, and Madison. Also left to mourn are two nephews Phillip and Kenny MacCuish and a long life line of friends, too many to name, included in this line are the friends at The Discovery Table at the Fire Hall, and his little dog Keeper. David was a well known painter by trade and avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, and volunteer. He enjoyed many trips to their "campcatchafish" cabin with his bud Darryl Huett. David was predeceased by his first wife Madelyn, and three grandchildren in infancy. David will always be remembered for his strength, honesty, with inspiration and his famous quote, "Good country this Canada." Our heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at An Cala and all the life line of friends who walked the journey with David. Sparrow - April 24, 1926 to October 15, 2010 - The last surviving member of his family, Joseph G. Sparrow passed peacefully with his family by his side at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Born and raised in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Dr. Cecil and Helen (Tobin) Sparrow. Survivved by his devoted wife of 63 years, Loretta (Deveaux). Six sons, Cecil, Manny, Joey, Kelly (Iris), Colin (Ruth), Gerry (Denise). Three daughters, Starla (Cecil) MacQueen, Joanne (Fabian) Lahey and Doreen. Predeceased by brothers, Alex, Henry, Eddy and Emanuel who died in action during WWII and sisters, Vin, Elaine, Jane, Murial and a niece Betty. A WWII veteran, Joe served in the armed forces from 1942-1946. A machinist by trade, he retired from Cape Breton Development Corporation. A patriotic man, he dedicated his time to Veteran Affairs. He served on the executive of Branch 40 Legion for twelve years. President for seven year, Cape Breton District Commander from 1987-1989, Zone Commander Zone 4, 1989, three consecutive terms, Poppy Chairman of the Provincial Command, President Cape Breton District Comfort Fund for 25 years, representing 29 Branches in Cape Breton, NS. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Palm Leaf. He was also President of the Glace Bay Seniors Pensioner Club for seven years, President of Branch 2 Legion named in honour of his father, Dr. Cecil John Sparrow. Funeral services have been entrusted to Curry's funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay. In keeping with Joe's wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Reserve Mines on Monday October 18, 2010, at 2 pm. Burial to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Reception to follow in the parish hall. Donations may be sent to the Cape Breton District Veteran's Comfort Fund in Joe's memory. ************************************ Florence Oakley - 72 yrs, Sydney - Florence Bernice Oakley, who passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, was also survived by sisters-in-law, Pauline, Mabel, Bommie, Jean and brother-in-law, Albert Clements. She was also predeceased by brothers-in-law, Gordon Cameron and Ernie Williams. ************************************* Arnold 'Pius' Sampson - River Bourgeois - Quietly at the Strait Richmond Hospital, on October 12, 2010, Arnold Sampson of River Bourgeois, Cape Breton, after a long struggle with cancer. Arnold was a polifiic songwriter and gifted musician who authored "Matthew's Voyage" "Home Again" "When I Say I Do I Will" "Angelina's Wish" and many other beautiful Cape Breton songs. Arnold left us far too early and was credited with being among Nova Scotia's most gifted musicians and songwriters. He won several awards for songwritting and performed on both coasts as well as internationally. Deeply missed by Laurie, his children, Selina, Selinda and Bethany. The youngest of seven siblings, he is survived by his sisters, Karen (Michael), Lois (Barry), Sheila (Gerry) and brothers, Wayne (Murdena), Gary (Christy) and Billy (Bev), several nieces and nephews and many friends. Arnold was predeceased by parents, Basil and Virginia (Thibeau) Sampson. Special thats to Dr. David Hasse and Dr. Jonathon Trites for their unfailing compassion and care throughout his long and difficult illness. Arnold met his illness with tremendous courage and dignity which was a testament of his strength of character. A sincere thant you to the nurses of ward 3B and the palliative care staff of Strait Richmond, who welcomed him home. Funeral services will be at St. Peter's United Church, at 6 pm on Saturday, October 23, 2010. A gathering to celebrate his music and life will follow at the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn at 7:30 pm.
