Ann was born Feb. 6, 1915, in Springhill, N.S., the daughter of the late Charles and Myra (O'Brien) Montague. The family moved to Sydney, N.S., where Ann grew up. Ann is survived by her husband of 30 years, Alfred Maher, Morrison Road, Sydney; sons, Fred (Bev), Reg (Marie), Jack (Sharon), Tim (Colleen), Gordie (Sandra); daughter, Gwen (John); daughter-in-law, Maggie Maye; stepsons, Raymond (Leona), Alfred (Elaine), Michael (Maureen), Keith (Lynn); stepdaughters, Margaret (Fred), Ann Marie (Keith), Donna (Dave); stepdaughters-in-law, Antje Maher and Assunta Maher; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband Fred Maye; sisters, Helen, Margaret, Audrey; brothers, Charles, Harry and Paul; son, David Maye and stepson, George Maher. Burial will take place at a later date in Turner Valley, Alta. ***************************************** Gail MacEachern Born in: Maidstone, Saskatchewan, Canada Born on: 02/09/1932 Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 13/10/2010 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Gail (Spence) MacEachern, a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, formerly of Park Street, Sydney and Grand Mira North, on Oct. 13, 2010. Born in Maidstone, Sask. on Sept. 2, 1932, mom was the daughter of the late Mabel (MacIntyre) Spence and Arthur Spence. She is survived by daughters, Arlene (Bill) Ferguson, Gail Jones (Andy Keough); sons, Joseph (Liz), John, Toronto, Arthur (April), Toronto, Robert (Marilyn), Mark and Steven (Lisa), Ottawa; 12 grandchildren, Latisha, Dawn, Anson, Christian, Colin, Evan, Darren, Edward, Calvin, Aaron, Morgan, Iain and eight great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Alyssa, Jaiden, Lorenn, Rowen, Brooke, Bryson and Quinn. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara Anderson and Joan MacLean and brothers, Darrell (Gen) and Bill Spence and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe MacEachern; infant daughter, Margaret; son, Alex; sister, Lorraine McCuish and brother, Douglas. As a devout member of St. Margaret's Church during their years in Grand Mira, mom actively participated in parish activities and was honoured to serve as a lay reader at Sunday mass. Mom was a life member of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, having joined in their charter year of 1954. She served in numerous offices including, president, treasurer and executive office, as well as having served as convener of several committees. An avid and competitive curler, mom enjoyed many years as a member of the Sydney Curling Club. She served on the executive and for several years coached the junior curlers. A kind and generous spirit, mom welcomed everyone into her home and heart. For many years, mom's Boxing Day parties were a highlight of the Christmas season. Every August for 25 years, mom hosted the annual games day celebrations at Jager's Cove in Grand Mira North, where family and friends gathered for a day of fun. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, Sydney. Memorial mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 at St. Margaret's Church, Grand Mira South Road with Rev. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. **************************************** Arnold Sampson Passed away in: River Bourgeois, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 12/10/2010 Quietly at the Strait Richmond Hospital on Oct. 12, 2010, Arnold Sampson of River Bourgeois, Cape Breton, N.S., after a long struggle with cancer. Arnold was a prolific songwriter and gifted musician, who authored "Matthew's Voyage", "Home Again", "When I Say I Do I Will", "Angelina's Wish" and many other beautiful Cape Breton songs. Arnold left us far too early and was credited with being among Nova Scotia's most gifted musicians and songwriters. He won several awards for songwriting and performed on both coasts as well as internationally. Deeply missed by Laurie; his children, Selina, Selinda and Bethany. The youngest of seven siblings, he is survived by his sisters, Karen (Michael), Lois (Barry), Sheila (Gerry) and brothers, Wayne (Murdena), Gary (Chrisy) and Billy (Bev); several nieces and nephews and many friends. Arnold was predeceased by parents, Basil and Virginia (Thibeau) Sampson. Special thanks to Dr. David Haase and Dr. Jonathon Trites for their unfailing compassion and care throughout his long and difficult illness. Arnold met his illness with tremendous courage and dignity which was a testament to his strength of character. A sincere thank you to the nurses of ward 3B and the palliative care staff at Strait Richmond, who welcomed him home. Born in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, Ian was the son of the late Belle (MacDonald) and Norman Smith. He was a member of Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Ian, our father/brother loved plants and also loved music. He cherished his daily calls to his beloved family and believed there was always time for a good laugh. Ian is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Ann Bennett (Shayne) and Angela Nicole Donna Smith, both of Sydney; his brothers, Henry (Sylvia), Walter and Leonard (Edna); and sisters, Donna Zurel, Marcella Roberts, Patricia Bradley (James) and Carol Smith; grandchildren, Shyla Marie Bennett and Connor Shayne Bennett. Kenneth passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Birch Grove in the family home, Kenneth was the son of the late John Archibald and Blanche Muriel (Spencer) MacRury. He was self employed for many years. He worked as an accountant at National Sea for 14 years (1978-1992). He was manager at H & R Block and he also was an enumeration supervisor with Census Canada. He was treasurer of Victoria Presbyterian Church for 50 plus years. He was on the board of directors of Co-op Atlantic, Glace Bay. He was trustee of the Birch Grove School. Kenneth was very interested in municipal, provincial and federal politics. He was a well respected local historian. He had a huge garden and was delighted to share the abundance with neighbours and friends. He will be sadly missed by his sons, Allison (Lorna), Port Hawkesbury, David (Brenda), Birch Grove, Kenneth (Ingrid), Greenwood, Lewis (Susan), Windsor Junction, Gordon (Joanne), Lower Sackville; daughters, Mary (Damian) Bray, Lower Sackville, Joan (Donald) MacMillan, Birch Grove; cherished grandchildren, Jamie, Serena, Breanna, Caelan MacRury, Cindy, Sarah, Angus Bray, Fraser, David MacMillan; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Noah MacRury.
