Sister Aileen Gilis Alfred David Charlesworth Harriet Marjorie Johnston Jeanette Shaw Jessie Ann White Louise 'Tuddie' MacLellan Kenneth Cornelius Genter Roland Christopher Hussey Mary Haley Linda Marie O'Leary ******************************************************************************************************* Sister Aileen Gilis Passed away in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/10/2010 Sister Aileen Gillis, 81, formerly Sister John Francis, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse on Oct. 7, 2010, in the 56th year of her religious life. Born in Sydney, C.B., N.S., she was the daughter of the late John Alexander and Margaret Geraldine (Bates) Gillis. Sister Aileen entered the Sisters of St. Martha on Aug.15, 1951, pronounced her first vows on Aug. 15, 1953, and made her perpetual commitment on Aug.15, 1956. She served in various health care institutions of the congregation, having received her nurses training at St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Hotel Dieu, Campbellton, New Brunswick, obtaining her R.N. in 1954. In 1959 Sister completed studies at the University of Toronto's University School of Nursing, with field work in paediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children and at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1965, Sister Aileen did further studies in paediatrics at Children's Hospital, Washington, D.C., and in 1973 received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 1976, Sister completed a two-year correspondence course in hospital organization and management with summer schools at University College in Winnipeg, Man. In Nova Scotia, Sister Aileen ministered at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish, St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and in the extended care unit at Bethany, where she also served as director of nursing care. In Alberta, Sister served at St. Michael's Hospital in Lethbridge and in Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff. Sister was community leader of the sisters in various nursing institutions and other convents where she lived. Sister Aileen retired from nursing service in 1983, yet continued to minister in administrative services at St. Martha's Regional Hospital, at Bethany and St. Andrews Convent in Antigonish Co. until August 2010. Sister Aileen was the fifth oldest in a family of 13. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary and Sister Anne, CND, and by her brothers, Fr. Lawrence 'Larry', Gerald, John Hugh, Cyril, Chris and Bernie. She is survived by sisters, Jane and Sarah (Sally); and her brothers, Joseph and Ronald. The remains rested at Bethany, beginning Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil was held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial took place Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Born in Florence, Alfred was the son of the late Gorge and Dorothy (Burkinshaw) Charlesworth. Alfred was employed with Maritime Tel & Tel until his retirement. He is survived by his son, David (Tracy) Charlesworth; daughter, Susan (Leonard) Snow; his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Peter, Melissa and Brent. Alfred is also survived by his brother, Walter (Margaret) Charlesworth; nephew, Colin; and niece, Kelly. Besides his parents, Alfred was predeceased by an infant son, Peter. There will be no visitation. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home Chapel, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Stella (Black) Johnston. Harriet is survived by her son, Rod (Nancy) Lukeman, P.E.I.; her sisters, Josephine (Clarence) Bennett, Sydney, Anna Fraser, Winnipeg; her grandchildren, Katie, Logan and Nicole, P.E.I.; as well as many nieces; nephews; and godchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Bobby and Roddy Johnston. Harriet furthered her education by obtaining her social work diploma from Niagara College, a CIM course at UCCB, as well as her Masters degree adult education from St. FX, and later was employed as the director of Howard House. She enjoyed many activities such as hiking when able, reading, her prayer groups and her special love for gardening. She has touched and inspired many people with her strong spiritual faith and beliefs. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Immaculate Heart, Mira Road, with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Reception to follow in the parish hall. Born in Glace Bay, Jeanette was the daughter of the late Ralph and Annie (Neilson) Barter. She is survived by her sister, Kay (Pat) Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Ronald and Mary Belle (MacKenzie) MacKinnon. Jessie was a devoted member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard and one of the original members of St. Ann's Society of Mount Carmel and the CWL. She was also a member of Aging Gracefully, the New Waterford Hospital Auxiliary and the Joy Program. A devout catholic, Jessie loved being in the presence of family and instilled in them her strong faith. Jessie's kitchen was her domain; cooking,baking, making sure the tea was made and serving those who came into her home. Surviving are daughters, Mary (Ed) O'Quinn, Agnes (Phonse) Martell, with whom she resided, both of New Waterford, Ann White MacLellan, Okotoks, Alta.; sons, Joseph (Tessie), Ambrose (Marilyn), Greg (Donna), all of New Waterford; sisters, Cassie Cote, Glace Bay, Catherine MacKay, New Waterford; grandchildren, Darren, Vernon, Dale, Joanne, Nancy, Robert, David, Gregory, Carol Ann, Craig, Deanna, Dillon, Heidi, Otto, Wayne; great-grandchildren, Cal, Jeremy, Jana, Liam, Mya, Cassie, Connor, Tessa, Isabella and Layla. She passed away quietly surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph D. 'Curly Joe' and Jessie (MacIsaac) Chiasson. Tuddie was a member of Mount Carmel church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. She enjoyed playing scat once a week with her friends. Tuddie truly loved her family and extended family dearly and will be missed. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bill; sons, Charlie (Peggy) MacLellan, Lingan, and Joe MacLellan, Ottawa; daughters, Anita MacLellan, Fredericton, and Charlene Cameron, Brampton; five grandchildren, Jamie Brewer (Kyla), Fredericton, Jennifer Brewer, Toronto, Anne Louise and Meaghan MacLellan, Lingan, Jessica Cameron, London; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Eleanor Brewer, Fredericton; one brother, Bernard. Kenneth was the son of the late Theodore and Ruby (Mauger) Genter. He is survived by his wife, Martha (Carey); his sons, John (Charlene), Florence, and Richard (Laureen), Sydney; his daughters, Corrina (Normand), Dartmouth, and Rebecca (Josh), Sydney Mines; and his six grandchildren, Aaron, Melissa, Joshua, Jeffrey, Sarah and Chloe. Also surviving are his sisters, Selina (Cecil), Diane and Ruby; his brother, Theodore (Edna); and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John, a brother, Joseph in infancy, and his sister, Marjorie. Kenneth was a former employee of Devco where he retired in 2000. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and enjoyed bowling in his earlier years. The family would like to thank Dr. McKeough, the nurses and all staff members on 4 West and the palliative care volunteers at the Northside General Hospital. Rollie was born in Ingonish, Aug. 22, 1928, to Flora Belle (Roberts) Hussey and Christopher Hussey. A hardworking man all of his life, Dad enjoyed his time as an electrician, an avid lobster fisherman and a heavy equipment operator at Cape Breton Highlands National Park until his retirement. In later years Dad continued to work mending nets and helping the local fisherman. Roland is survived by sons, Keith (Ann) and Kelvin (Maria); daughters, Dorothy (Graham Best) and Marisa Murphy, Ingonish; sisters, Anne and Evelyn; grandchildren, Shoshanna, Cohen (Cora), Cole, Karlie, Tanner; great-grandchildren, Johnathan and Kelvin. Besides his parents, Roland was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Fricker), brothers, Charles, Jack, Ben, Harry, George, Herbie and sister, Etta. Memorial donations may be made to North Of Smokey Palliative Care Society or charity of choice. ****************************************** Mary Haley Born in: Lamaline, Newfoundland, Canada Born on: 01/03/1939 Passed away in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 09/10/2010 It is with sadness that we, the family of Mary Haley, formerly of 26 Summer St., North Sydney, announce that she has passed. She was born in Lamaline, N.L., March 1, 1939, to Bernard and Teresa Haley, and came to North Sydney to attend the wedding of Teresa and Kevin Armstrong, on June 27, 1959. She remained in North Sydney and became an integral part of the Armstrong family. She worked for most of her life at the Metropolitan Store in North Sydney, and was an avid bingo and card player. She enjoyed doing crafts such as knitting and sewing and built her life around her family and friends. She lived her life with a zest for living and enjoyed taking care and being part of the Armstrong family. She adored Teresa and Kevin's daughter, Mary Beth, and son, Kevin. With the marriage of Kevin to Gladys, and the birth of their two children, David and Haley, Mary had another generation of Armstrongs to love. With Gladys, Kevin's wife, she found a 'daughter' of her own. When Mary was unable to live on her own it was her 'daughter' Gladys that made her life comfortable. For the last four years of her life Mary resided at Harbourstone in Sydney where she quickly became a favourite of the people that helped Gladys look after her. She is survived by her brother, Will (Mercedes) Haley, of Lamaline, N.L.; and the Armstrong family. There will be no visitation as per Mary's wishes. A celebration of Mary's life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m., from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Mella (Bennett) O'Leary. Linda worked in the food industry for over 30 years including Jaspers, Tim Hortons and more recently, Jack Rudy's. She was a member of St. Joseph's parish, Reserve Mines. Spending time with her family and friends was her passion. She was a very fun loving and compassionate individual who touched the lives of many. Her short time on this earth is testament that she was a loving and much loved person. Linda is survived by her longtime partner, Randy Smith; her siblings, Gerry (Terry), Mary (Freddie), Greg (Viola), Brian (Patricia), Debbie, Raylene (Bernie), Patti (Leonard); her godchild, Cindy (Chris); special girls, Tiffany and Dawn; and her four-legged babies, Casey and Annabelle. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Gayle Adshade, Linda (Horne); and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Ted, Gerard and Joe, and sister-in-law, Virginia (MacLellan). In honoring Linda's wishes, cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Reserve Mines with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, MacLeod's Road.
