Shirley Margaret Devoe Colin 'Collie' MacDonald Charmaine Marie Louis Cantwell Mary Teresa MacMillan Marjorie Joan MacKinnon Annette O'Brien ******************************************************************************************************* Shirley Margaret Devoe Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/03/1941 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Shirley Margaret Devoe, who passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the VG Site, QE II surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy illness. Shirley was born in Sydney Mines, N.S., March 7, 1941, she was the daughter of the late John 'Jack' and Viola (Jessome) McGean. Shirley loved music, dancing, bingo and playing cards. She was loved by all who knew her and will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She was survived by sons, John Glenn (Mona), Beaverbank, Perry (Lorna Coles), Hammonds Plains; daughters, Sherry Davis (Bill), Bedford, Sharonann (Sandy Paquet), Windsor Junction; grandchildren, John Lee, Cole, Owen; step-grandchildren, Ian, Jacqueline, Billy, Mitchil, Chelsea, Travis; great-grandchildren, Logan, Chase, Briley; sister, Madonna Brown; brothers, Edward (Lillian), Robert (Jean), Melvin; sisters-in-law, Eleanor, Jeannie and Cynthia; brother-in-law, Henry Dormiedy; extended family, Edith Johnson (Alex). She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jerome Clifford Devoe (1988), sisters, Jean Merritt, Mary Dormiedy, Shirley in infancy, brothers, Lawrence, Gordon, Douglas, sister-in-law, Eunice McGean, brothers-in-law, Art Brown and Jim Merritt. Visitation will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Shirley will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery and reception to follow in the parish hall. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ********************************************************* Colin 'Collie' MacDonald Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: River Ryan, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 18/10/2010 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Colin Francis MacDonald of River Ryan on Oct. 15, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital with his loving family by his side. Colin was born and raised in New Waterford. He was the son of the late John A. MacDonald (Jack the widow) and Margaret (MacLellan) MacDonald. He was employed with the Dominion Coal Company for 21 years as a Mining Official in #16 and #18 collieries. In 1955, he became a member of the New Waterford Mine Rescue Team. Later in 1958, as captain of his team, he assisted the rescue effort at the Spring Hill Mine disaster. In 1960, he started his own business, Ocean Fuels Ltd., River Ryan, which remains in the family today. In 1967, he accepted the position of mining inspector and later supervisor of mine inspections with the Provincial Department of Labour until his retirement in 1989. Colin was a devoted parishioner of the former St. Michael's parish, now St. Leonard's. He was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3209 New Waterford. He enjoyed wood working, reading and working around his yard, camping in Englishtown Ridge and making his daily visits to Ocean Fuels. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Colleen Tighe and Anita Tatlock (Derek); sons, John (Diane), Lawrence (Barbara), Raymond (Lorraine), all of River Ryan; sister, Ella MacDonald of Detroit, Mich. Colin was known as "Papa" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Robert Tighe (Jenn), Winnipeg, Angela Douglas (Kevin), Kingston, Ont., Derek MacDonald (Bindu), Sudbury, Paul MacDonald (Becky), Gananoque, Jennifer Graveline (Ian), Glen Haven, Michelle Tatlock, Glen Haven, Jeffrey Tatlock, Oklahoma, David MacDonald, Antigonish, and Mark MacDonald, River Ryan. Papa had a special place in his heart for his 10 great-grandchildren, Colton, Colin and Danny Tighe, Paige and Lauren Douglas, Jaya and Nadia MacDonald, Duncan and Elliot MacDonald and Sophie Graveline. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Cameron, Doris MacDonald, Savina MacNeil, Mary (Sandy) MacDonald; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his stepmother, Kay MacDonald. Colin was recently predeceased by his wife, Mary Jessie (Aug. 12, 2010), brothers, Angus 'Curly', Allan, Alexander 'Sandy', Francis 'Chubby', stepbrothers, Jeff and Joe MacNeil, stepsisters, Lexie Graham, Mary Kennedy, Annie MacIntyre, and son-in-law, Francis Tighe. Visitation will be held today (Monday, Oct. 18) from 2-4 and 7-9 at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. Members of the Knights of Columbus will assemble for a prayer service in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct 18. Charmaine left us on Oct. 15, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital. Charmaine was very fortunate to have such giving and caring parents. She touched many peoples lives that she came in contact with. Although Charmaine had disabilities, she lived her life to the fullest, enjoying many events and celebrations. She was our special angel and always will be. Charmaine is survived by her parents, Lorne and Patrice (MacLean) Cantwell; brother, Chad (Breanne) and special nephew, Conner; grandparents, Russell and Anges MacLean; grandmother, Louise Cantwell; and great-grandmother, Mary MacLean. She will be dearly missed by many uncles, aunts and cousins. Charmaine was predeceased by her grandfather, Warren Cantwell, Aunt Allison Buffett and Uncle Russell Cantwell. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ********************************** Mary Teresa MacMillan Born in: Lingan, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Lingan, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/10/2010 Mary MacMillan, 65, of Lingan, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Lingan, C.B., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Handrahan) MacMillan. Mary worked in Worcester, Mass., for 42 years before retiring and returning to Lingan in June of 2010. While in Worcester, she was a devoted catholic and choir member of Christ the King Church. She was a lifetime member of the Miraculous Medal Association. Mary was also a member of the Lingan Dart League. She was a kind, loving person who enjoyed a good book, needle pointing, skating and being with her family. Mary is survived by her only sister, Doreen (Fred) Sponagle, New Victoria; four brothers, Walter (Mary Alice), Frankie, both in Sydney, Greg (Mary Jane), Big Pond, Bart (Tillie), Lingan; nine nieces; four nephews; two grandnieces and one grandnephew. Also left to mourn Mary's death is her aunt, Sr. Frances Gertrude of Sisters of Charity, Halifax; cousins in Cape Breton, Worcester, Chicago; and her many friends she made over the years in Worcester, Mass. Mary was predeceased by her parents, sister-in-law, Phyllis MacMillan, and nephew, Freddie Sponagle Jr. A sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the CBRH and the VON for their compassion and caring nature. Marjorie passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Elsie (Keight) Hyde. Marjorie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, as well as a good game of cards and bingo. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines. She is survived by her five children, Kevin (Diane), Halifax, Wanda MacKinnon, Kelowna, B.C., Jim (Laurie), Dartmouth, Marjorie (Francis), Ottawa, Robert (Daina), North Sydney; her two sisters, Estella Bartlett, Halifax, Dorothy Hyde, Sydney Mines; and by her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband James MacKinnon, her sister, Rose and brothers, Danny, Sonny and Harold. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Debbie MacKinnon, Marjorie';s close friend and caregiver, the staff of 4E and 4W of the Northside General Hospital, as well as the staff of Palliative Care for the care and kindness shown to our mother. Annette passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness, with her loving family by her side. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Alphonse and the late Viola 'Lu' (Walsh) O'Brien, and was a member of St. John's Church, New Aberdeen. Annette worked at several jobs in our local area, her last job was with Highland Fisheries where she retired from. Annette was a very jolly person who loved to sing, dance, bowl, play darts and listen to country music. She was a true Toronto Maple Leafs fan and loved driving her car, especially driving her numerous nieces and nephews all over town, her car was known as "net-nets taxi". She will be sadly missed by her sons, Lloyd (Sam) Hall, Halifax, Phonsie Hall; and daughter Sandra Hall, both of Kitchener, Ont. Nanny Net-Net is also survived by eight beautiful grandchildren, Jessica, Logan, Emily, Liam, Gracie Lu, Megan, Samantha, Evan; sisters, Marie (Ike), Donna (Marty), Sheila (Mike), Vera (Joe), Paula (Johnnie); brothers, Jack (Nancy), Wayne (Martha), Mickey; and most of all by her father, Phon. Annette is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her mother, 'Lu' she was also predeceased by brothers, Tommy, Phonsie, Kevin and sister Patsy. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral home 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Leo Boone will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. in St. John's Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
