Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Lauchlie and Ella MacDonald. Carol Anne was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's United Church and also a member of the Association of Marian Helpers. She was a graduate of the Cape Breton Business College and worked at MacLeod's bookstore for many years and also, Sydney Memorial Chapel. Carol Anne is survived by one son, Karl 'Tracy' (Tracey), Ottawa and three grandsons, Jordan, Shane and Devon, Ottawa. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at Dutch Brook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. **************************************** John Allan 'Al' Dugas Born in: Alder Point, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Passed away on: 16/10/2010 John Allan 'Al' Dugas of Nanaimo, B.C., passed away Oct. 16, 2010, at 5:46 a.m. at the age of 93. Al was born to Walter Dugas and Theresa Dugas (Arsenault) of Alder Point, N.S. in 1917. He spent the end of his time with his dear wife Sallyjean Dugas (Connor) in their home in Nanaimo. Al is survived by three sons, Dan Dugas, Empress, Alta., Bob Dugas (Barbara), Courtenay, B.C., and Gerry Dugas (Dinorah), Burnaby, B.C.; and daughter-in-law, Diana. Al was predeceased by wife, Patricia Lillian Dugas (Sloan) on Aug. 28, 1995, sisters, Genevieve Gillis, Marguerite O'Shea, Gertrude Walker, Melita Bungay, brothers, Justin Dugas, Reginald Dugas and Gregory Dugas. Al has 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Al left Nova Scotia at the age of 15 and 'rode the rails' across Canada to Vancouver and was later part of the Great Depression, Relief Camps, and the historical "On to Ottawa" trek of 1935. The trekkers were corralled in Regina by police with machine guns and had the message delivered by the then Prime Minister R.B.Bennett, "tell the boys we'll give them bullets instead of bread." Al was very fond of boating, camping and travelling. He always had many stories and jokes to share and even in his later days had an amazing memory for names and details. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family and friends of Al are having a celebration of his life on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 3511 Osprey Outlook in Nanaimo from 1-4 p.m. A memorial service will take place in Cape Breton at a later date. He was the son of the late John James, Upper Grand Mira and Mary Ann (McCormick) McDonald, French Road. In his younger years, Angus lived at 56 Matilda St., Sydney. Angus is survived by his wife, Jeanne (nee Rondeau); sons, Robert (Anne), Larry (Lois) and Ray (Stella) and missed dearly by his nine grandchildren, Shannon, Renee, Daniel, Jeffery, Jimmy, Kristine, Jeannette, Laura, Mark and one great-granddaughter, Keziah. Also missed by his sisters, Helen Roach, Halifax, formerly of New Waterford, Cecilia Curry, Stellarton; many nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bernard Alex, John James Vincent and sisters, Annie Catherine and Mary Elizabeth 'Mish' Power. Visitation and the funeral took place, in Toronto, Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, with family, friends, relatives and neighbors in attendance. Angus never lost his love for Cape Breton; he travelled home from the time he was a university student until his eighties when his sister, Mary 'Mish' Power died. When he could not come home, he continued to ask about his relatives and childhood friends until his last summer. As one family member recalled, his virtues of kindness, patience and accommodation were installed in his sons and his grandchildren. ****************************************** Valerie (Coughtry) Smith Passed away in: Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 17/10/2010 Peacefully passed away on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010. She is reunited with her husband Allen P. Smith. Valerie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her stepdaughters, Barbara (Dana) Stevens and Sara (Don) Nordquist her step-grandchildren, Adrienne (Chris) Kivell and Aaron Stevens and her step great-grandchildren, Sydney, Madeline and Cody. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Arthur and the late Muriel (Turner) Payne. In 1956, Jim joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in British Columbia, and later attended Mount Saint Allison University. In 1965, he began his career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He retired in 1990 after 25 years of service. Jim enjoyed life on the Mira until moving to Kingswood Residence in Hammonds Plains where he lived peacefully under the excellent care of Kris and Mariola Ganski. He is survived by his children, Jennifer, Bedford, James (Dorothy), Halifax and John, Cheticamp; his grandchildren, Aiden, Conal, Sam and Jack and his brothers, Ernie (Beverly), Bedford, Arthur (Ursula), Toronto, Ont. and Gary, Mazatlan, Mexico and many nieces and nephews. A private gathering for family and friends will be held in Bedford. A service in Sydney will be held at a later date. She was the daughter of the late John and Veronica (Corbett) Burke. Beloved wife of Keith Whiteland. Dear mother of Sarah Antinello (Tony Wright), Anthony Antinello (Deanna), all of Hamilton, Ont. and John Joe Antinello of New Brunswick. Loving grandmother of Vanessa and Colin Wright, Anthony, Brittany and John Antinello. Sister of Gen Spence (Darrell), Thomas Burke (Gayle) and Frank Burke (Charlotte), all of Sydney; special niece, Angela MacDonald (Jim), Halifax; sister-in-law, Judy Burke, Montreal and family friend, Bob Fagan, Halifax; several other nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins as well as extended family members. Society. ********************************************* Geraldine 'Gerry' (Hall) Spears Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 22/10/2010 The time has come to say good bye to the light of our life and the rock of our family, as she leaves us in mourning with a whisper from the wind and sea. Geraldine quietly passed away with family by her side on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010 at the Glace Bay Hospital. She was tired of fighting a courageous battle with cancer so she has made her way home and is now at peace. Geraldine 'Gerry' was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Frances (Neary) Hall. She will be sadly missed and forever loved by her devoted husband, Robert, who never left her side from the day they met. She is also survived by her daughter, Lana Spears and partner, Charles Pellerine, Guysborough County; son, Robert 'Bobby' Spears and his wife Melinda, Donkin; her special granddaughter at home, Angie (for whom she shared a very special bond with her love, devotion, care and compassion). Granddaughter, Tiffany (Teddy) Sheppard, Ontario; and BJ Spears, Donkin and great-grandchildren, Kailey and Logan, Ontario. She is also survived by sisters, Elaine Wilkinson, Glace Bay, Nancy (Jimmy) Arbuckle, Donkin; brothers, Edward (Barb) Hall, Fredericton and Karl (June), Dartmouth, along with their extended families. Nieces and nephews, Dale, Rhonda, Wilberta, Jean, Derek, Gerard, Johnny, Lindsay, Patrica, Jamie, Stephen, Michael, Kirk, Chad, Brent, Tracy Ann, Billy and Brian; sisters-in law, Lucy, Bertha, Loretta and Doris. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving sister, Marcella (John) Burke; brother, Wilbert Hall; niece, Roberta Wilkinson; father/mother-in-law, William and Elizabeth (Casey) Spears; brothers-in-law, Alvin and Freddy Spears, and sisters-in-law, Annie Francis, Frances Taylor and Margaret Munroe. In her early years, she was employed with H.H. Hopkins Ltd until she met the love of her life and together they shared many happy years as light house keepers on Flint Island off Port Morien, Scatarie Island off Louisbourg, Forchu Light and Eddy's Point in Mulgrave with the Coast Guard until their retirement, then moved back to Port Morien to be with their family and friends. She was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 55 of Port Morien and was always willing to lend a helping hand. At this time, the family would like to thank all doctors and staff at the Glace Bay Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital (An Cala) for their care and support along the way. Special thanks to all who assisted during Geraldine's benefit dance and especially Herman Wadden Jr. and his band Gone Country. The biggest thank you is for Joey and Pam Forward for keeping a watchful eye and sending meals down to dad (Robert). She was a devote Roman Catholic and a member of St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay. Ritie, along with her late brother Norman were caregivers to their parents, John and Catherine (McInnis) MacIntyre. Ritie was a gifted seamstress and would astound us with curtains and coverings made completely by hand. She loved going to bingo with her mother and nieces. In younger years Ritie with her husband Danny a decorated and dedicated veteran of World War II spent many hours dancing the night away at Branch 40 and Branch 03 Legions. She had a special place in her heart for cats, especially for Newt and Snowflake. Ritie had a special bond with her nieces and nephews as was seen on her 90th birthday when Catherine's family surprised her with an impromptu visit. Ritie will be sadly missed by her devoted caregivers Kathy and Mike Hurley, who made it possible for her to remain in the home she loved for many extra years. She will be sadly missed by her sister Jessie Sickles, Ont.; nieces Colleen Bagnell, Maureen Lovell, Kathy Hurley, Joan Delaney, Elaine Gale, Donna MacDonald, Carol Boudreau, Judy Hareguy, Marie McMullin-McGoey, Arlene Harrison; nephews Jimmy Kennedy, Elliott Kennedy, David Boudreau, Archie McMullin, Jerry McMullin; grand nieces, grand nephews and special friend Gary Mann. Online condolences to the family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ********************************************* Augustus 'Gus' Carrigan Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 22/10/2010 Following a brief illness, Gus Carrigan, age 91, passed away on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at home with his wife and children at his side. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Thomas & Ethel (Johnston) Carrigan. Gus was a coal miner, working his entire career in No. 12 Colliery. During the Second World War, he served four years with the Canadian Armed Forces in Newfoundland. Gus was a former member of St. Agnes Church. In his youth, he was a well known violin player. In the early 1930s he played with the youth orchestra, 'The Kindergarden Seven' at various dances throughout the area and on local radio stations. Gus is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose (Stepaniak) Carrigan; one daughter, Cecilia (Larry) Skinner, Owen Sound, Ont.; one son, Gregory (Lynda Moffatt) Carrigan, Port Hawkesbury; five grandchildren, Blayne, Lisa, Stephen, Roselle and Christopher and six great-grandchildren. Gus was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Gus was predeceased by four sisters, Anne (Donald) MacDonald, Ella (Henry) Camerlingo, Elizabeth (Wilfred) Clements and Grace (Clement) MacIsaac; four brothers, John (Mary), Joseph (Cassie), William (Annie) and George (Sophie). The family would like to especially thank Beth Latham and the palliative care team for their compassion and helping make Gus's last days as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Thanks also to Beth's uncle, Willie Fraser for coming to the house to play a few fiddle tunes for Dad. It was truly appreciated.
