Mary 'Genevieve' MacNeil Passed away in: Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 28/10/2010 Genevieve MacNeil, age 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck. Genevieve was the foster daughter of the late John Alex and Elizabeth MacNeil of Ottawa Brook, N.S. She was employed for many years at Imperial Optical Co. in Toronto and on retirement she returned to Sydney, N.S. The past year and a half she resided at Alderwood Rest Home where she received excellent care. Genevieve was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony Daniel parish in Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a foster brother Leo Bonaparte. She will be missed be nieces, nephews and cousins. In honouring Genevieve's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral will be held at St. Columba Parish Church, Iona, N.S. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Rogers 95, Sydney Forks It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Emerson Rogers, regret to announce his passing on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. Born in Westchester Mountain, Cumberland Co. on Feb.12, 1915, Emerson was the eldest son of the late Stanley and Juanita (Tupper) Rogers. While serving in the Second World War, he met and married his wife of 59 years, Betty (Weymss) Rogers in St. Andrews, Scotland. When the war ended, they settled in Sydney Forks and had three children, Bryon (Heather), Northside East Bay, Arthur (Jean), Meadows Road and their only daughter, Florence (Vernon) Oakley, Sydney Forks. For many years, he worked at Chappels Building Supplies until he went to the Sydney Post Office, where he worked until he retired in 1980. Emerson was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 151, where he served as president and treasurer. He was also a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Emerson is survived by his children; four brothers, Prescott, Charles, Al and Douglas; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Rogers (Bain), Shaelene, Blair, Charlene, Jason, Meghan and Walter. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, of whom he was so proud, Avery Dolhanty, Gerald and Braxton Rogers and Casey Bain. Besides his parents and wife, Emerson was predeceased by two sisters, Audrey and Emily and brother, Sheldon. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday 11 a.m., with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. He was predeceased by his wife, Arline (Ferguson) MacVicar; his parents, Charles and Edith (Anderson) MacVicar; a sister, Katherine Austin and brothers, Neil and James. He is survived by his children, Ian (Nancy) Hammonds Plains, Neil (Mary), Glace Bay, Morah (Brian) Glace Bay, Allan (Mary) Bedford; grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsay, Katie, Allan and Laura, step - grandchildren, Christopher, Daniel and Ryan; a sister, Martha MacVicar, Toronto; brother, Donald (Ann) Bedford; sister-in-law, Isabel, Black Point and many nieces and nephews. He was a teacher in Glace Bay schools for 40 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, where he was a longtime elder. There will be no visitation. Born in Sydney Mines, Eileen was the daughter of the late Edward and Delphine (Hart) Leach. She was a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Sydney Mines. In her younger years, Eileen was an avid bowler and a member of the Lucky Strikes, a team which won many titles over the years. She also loved to skate. For just over 26 years, she worked at F.W. Woolworth's in Sydney Mines. Eileen's greatest love was her family. She was 'Nonee' to her grandchildren Christina and Todd. She was a wonderful homemaker, taking great pride in her cooking and baking. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed doing many crafts. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Allister Salisbury; daughter, Kim (Rob) Legere; grandchildren, Christina and Todd; sister, Brenda (Ron) O'Handley and brother, John (Rita) Leach, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Eileen was predeceased by brothers, Edward and James Leonard (in infancy) and sisters, Muriel Potter and Theresa Leach. She passed away surrounded by family at Glace Bay Hospital on Oct. 28, 2010. Audrey was born in Bridgeport, Dec. 29, 1927, and lived most of her life in Dominion, Cape Breton. Audrey was a teacher, having been trained in Truro. She commenced her career at age 18, teaching first in Bridgeport and then for a short time in the basement of St. Eugene's Church, teaching upwards of 50 children in a class. After she married, she taught in New Waterford at Mount Carmel Elementary, where she taught for 35 years. Audrey is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Leonard Stephenson. Together they raised two children, Joanne (Fred) Gillis and Mary Anita (Allen) McCormick. She was a loving Nana to Liam and Anna Gillis and Jessica and Kyle McCormick. Audrey is also survived by her sister, Rita Morrison; brothers, John and Myles Farrell; and many relatives and friends. Besides her parents, Joseph and Annie (MacDonald) Farrell, she was predeceased by her sister, Levenia and brother, Michael. Audrey was a devout Catholic, a proof reader and critic to all of Len's endeavours, and philanthropist to many charities. Her deeds of kindness and concern for others went without fan fare. She cherished the time spent with her family and adored her grandchildren. Visitation for Audrey will take place at Curry's Funeral Home in Glace Bay, Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Eugene's Church officiated by Fr. James Ignatius Attwood of St Joseph Catholic parish, North Sydney, N.S. Fr. Jim was born June 21, 1953, Glace Bay. Fr. Jim was predeceased by his parents James Ignatius Attwood and Nora (nee Parsons). Fr. Jim was the oldest of seven children and had a zest for life, loved music, reading and travel. He dedicated his life to his ministries and friends and could always be called upon. Jim is survived by one sister and five brothers, Wilfred (Marilyn), Craig (Lucy), Cathy MacMillan (Rod), Peter (Joan), Brad and Basil (Shannon). Jim is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews who were very fond of their Uncle Jim. Jim was ordained on Aug. 8, 1989, at Holy Cross in Glace Bay for the Diocese of Antigonish by the Most Rev. Colin Campbell. From 1989 to 1990, he served at St. Joseph in Bras d'Or, St. Anne in Alder Point, St. Joachim in Boularderie (associate); from 1990 to 1991 at Holy Redeemer in Sydney (associate); from 1991 to 1993 at St. Peters in Larry's River, St. Joseph in Charlos Cove, St. Joseph in Port Felix (pastor); from 1996 to 2002 at St. Augustine in Sydney (pastor); from 2002 to 2005 at St. Agnes in New Waterford, St. Joseph in New Victoria, St. Alphonsus in Victoria Mines (pastor); from 2005 to 2007 at Immaculate Conception in Bridgeport, St. Eugene in Dominion, St. James in Gardiner (pastor) and from 2007 to the present at St. Joseph and Our Lady of Sorrows in North Sydney (pastor). Fr. Jim was involved in other ministries, including Council of Priests, diocesan consultors, chair diocesan business and finance committee, vice-president of FSENS, chaplin to young offenders, Sydney, director of pastoral services (1996 to 2002), vicar general (2000 to 2002), judge, national appeals tribunal, Ottawa (2005 to present), director of the deaconate program for the Diocese of Antigonish. Fr. Jim received special honours: Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) in 1995, Doctorate in Canon Law (JCD), Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome in 1997. Fr. Jim graduated from St. Michael Senior High in Glace Bay, 1971; graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1983 with a BA major philosophy; attended St. Augustine's Seminary and St. Basil's College, Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto from 1985 to 1989, MDiv, STB. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, and 2-4 p.m., Tuesday at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home in North Sydney. Fr. Jim's remains will then be transferred Tuesday evening to St. Joseph Church in North Sydney, with the vigil commencing at 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's with Bishop Brian Dunn officiating. May the peace of the Lord be with you always Father, Brother, Friend. ************************************************** Roderick 'Roddie' MacLeod Born in: Dunvegan, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 25/12/1920 Passed away in: Dunvegan, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 29/10/2010 Alexander Roderick 'Roddie' MacLeod died Oct. 29 at home in Dunvegan, surrounded by his family. Dad was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Dunvegan, Inverness County, N.S. It was there in his beloved Dunvegan where he lived a long and full life. A life that reflected his commitment to family, faith, community and culture. Dad was passionate about farming and was not deterred by the hard work and challenges that accompany the day to day life on the farm. He raised dairy and beef cattle, and during the early years he marketed milk, beef and produce throughout the local area using a horse and wagon. He was named post master of the Dunvegan Post Office in 1955 and he delivered the mail daily to the post office in Chimney Corner. Dad was a strong believer in, and had a deep rooted loyalty to the co-operative and credit union movement. In 2000, he received the Distinguished Co-operator Award recognizing the 25 years he served as director and president of the board of the Inverness Filene Credit Union as well as 15 years as a director and president of the board of the Shean Co-operative. Dad was chairman of the Dunvegan Home and School Association for 10 years, trustee of the Inverness School Board for 12 years and board member of the Inverness Federation of Agriculture for seven years. He drove the school bus with competence and care for many years. His determination that everyone be treated with fairness saw him selected president of his CUPE local. In 1997, the Broad Cove Scottish Concert was dedicated to Mom and Dad, recognizing their lifelong contributions to both the parish and to the concert. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Christene (MacLellan) and their 10 children, D.J. (Andrea), Mary (Jim), Siena (Michael), Christene, Rory (Donna), Donalda (Christopher), Theresa (Shawn), Ann (Eric), Augusta (Gary), Colonel (Cheryl) and 23 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Grant, Sr. Anne MacLeod, Margaret MacLellan and brother Rev. A.J. MacLeod. He was predeceased by his parents, DanJoe and Mary Belle (Collins) and his brothers Collins, Donald, J.D., Alex, Finlay, Fr. Colonel and his sister, Aurelia. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Broad Cove.
