(Whalen) Curran, 96, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in New Jersey, at the home of her daughter, Eileen, with whom she was residing at the time. Margaret was born Sept. 1, 1913 in Colliers, Newfoundland. She was a former resident of Sydney, residing at Elmwood Avenue and lastly at Wesley Street with her son, William, before moving to New Jersey to be with her daughter. She is survived by her loving children, William Curran, Mary Pozar and Eileen (Frank) O'Grady. Margaret is also survived by her 12 cherished grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Patrick Curran; her daughter, Betty and her sons, Thomas and Patrick. **************************************** Etta Smith Born in: Neils Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 23/07/1932 Passed away in: Neils Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 08/09/2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear loving mother, Etta Doreen (Lawrence) Smith on Sept. 8, 2010 in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born July 23, 1932 in Neils Harbour, she was a daughter of the late John and Elsie (Best) Lawrence. Doreen was a member of the ladies auxillary with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 85, Neils Harbour. She also enjoyed playing bingo, camping at Lake Ainsley, knitting and baking. She is survived by children, Jackie (Jocelyn), Dougie, Elaine Nunn, Brenda (Bobby) Fitzgerald, Derek (Anita); grandchildren, Johnny, Adam, Jamie, Nathan, Amy, Vanna, and Samantha; nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett; sisters, Ella, Inez and Beat and grandson, Carter. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 in St. Andrews Church, Neils Harbour, Rev. Vernon Reid will officiate. Interment in parish cemetery. Billy was a lifelong resident of the Mulloch. He was the son of the late Archie and Betty (Rector) MacDonald. Billy was a woodsman all his life and enjoyed the outdoors. He was well liked and a friend to all. Billy will be sadly missed by his wife, Sally Garland; his sons, Laurie (Charlene), Wayne (Muriel), Willie (Roslyn), John Allan (Pat), Brian and Scott; daughters, Margie (William) Sealy, Caroline (Dougie) Marshall; sister, Nellie (Ernest) Nicholson and 11 grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by son, Tony and brother, Bonnie. There will be no visitation by request. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. *********************************************** Lloyd Benjamin Pistone Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Passed away on: 09/09/2010 Lloyd Pistone of Grove Hamlet Moncton, N.B., passed away at The Moncton Hospital after a short illness, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2010. He was born in Sydney, C.B., the son of the late Benjamin and Gladys Pistone (nee Shannon). He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eva May Pistone (nee Wilson); two sisters from Ontario, Karen (Terry Doyle) and Lana (Donald McMullin). He was predeceased by two infant children, Jason Wilson and Kimberly Dawn. Lloyd is survived by godsons, Darren Sweet (Lise) and Troy Sweet (Dr. Michelle Conrod). Lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews. Lloyd will be missed by Eva's six sisters and two brothers, and three special childhood friends, Ian Macintyre, Doug MacFayen and Tom Reid. He was predeceased by two other special childhood friends, Donnie Matheson and Jimmy Coleman. Lloyd worked at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for 39 years. He began his career with CIBC in Sydney, N.S. in 1956, and for the next 39 years he worked across Canada, as well as Barbados, Grenada, Grand Cayman and Antigua, holding various managerial and head office positions both in the West Indies and later in Canada. Lloyd was a proud Italian Cape Bretoner, an avid hunter and fisherman and a magnificent storyteller, with an amazing sense of humour and love of life. Lloyd was a life long learner; a graduate of St. FX University and The Atlantic Baptist University, he also took courses at Dalhousie and McMaster University, and received his F.I.C.B., he was a member of the Canadian Forces Reserves, Nova Scotia C.B. Highlanders. Lloyd was a member of the Moncton Gyro Club, Garden Club, Writers Club and editor of the CIBC Business Magazine, a member of the Art Society. He was a talented artist, and an avid gardener. He was an active volunteer with The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation. Resting at Fair Haven Funeral Home with visitation Monday, Sept. 13 from 10-11 a.m., immediately followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Fr. Yvon Arsenault presiding. Burial in Fair Haven Memorial Gardens following the service. A reception for Lloyd friends and family will follow the service in the Garden View Reception Room. McInnis Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 08/09/2010 It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of Daniel Alexander McInnis on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at home. Born in Glace Bay, Dannie was the son of the late Daniel and Gertrude (McAdam) McInnis. Dannie was a member of St. Anthony's parish in Glace Bay. A former employee and dragger-man at the Broughton mine in the 1960s, Dannie moved on to Sydney Steel in 1970 where he was employed for 30 years, making friends from all over Cape Breton Island. Dannie loved gardening and doing yard work. He volunteered at the parish fairs and would also canvass for the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation. A hard working individual, Dannie was also known as the, 'Handyman of the Neighbourhood' (Steele's Hill), always their to lend a helping hand. At one time he was an avid hunter; but mostly, Dannie will be remembered for his quick wit. Dannie is survived by one daughter, Michele (McInnis) LeBlanc, Glace Bay; three sons, Shaun, Ottawa, Craig, Glace Bay, and Trevor (Rose), Oromocto, N.B. Also surviving are Dannie's four grandchildren, Jordan, Avery, Shelby, Eric; siblings Rita, (Joe) Gromack and Laura (John) Young, both of Glace Bay. Besides his parents, Dannie was predeceased by Nema, his loving wife of 45 years, brother, Allie and son-in-law, Allan Leblanc. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday, Sept. 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The Funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Norman McPhee will be Monday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay. Internment will follow in the parish cemetery. Fellowship is to be held in the parish hall. Born and raised in New Waterford, N.S., he served in the Canadian Navy. Chuck moved to Tewksbury, Mass. in 1967 where he worked for Verizon until his retirement in 1998. He was an avid athlete and sports enthusiast. Charles is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Georgina (Prozenar) Schima. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret (MacDonald); daughter and son-in-law, Hermine and Paul Basso and grandson, Jeremy of Tyngsboro, Mass.; brother, Robert of Brentwood, New Hampshire; dear friends, Morris Wood of British Columbia, and Hugh Grimshaw of Nova Scotia.
