Loving husband of Rita. Proud father of Errol (Corey-Ann), Eric (Milena) and John. Loving grandfather of Emily, Olivia, Errol and Ben. Survived by his siblings, Bill (Donna), Clare (Dougie Price), Rod (Gerri) and Mary-Theresa. Predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Clare Borden of Reserve Mines. Cremation followed the funeral mass which was held at St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Markham, Ont. on Aug. 16, 2010. Donations may be made to the Heart & Stoke Foundation or the York Central Hospital-Dialysis Unit. ******************************* Gary MacDonald Born in: Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/09/2010 Gary Scott MacDonald, of McConnell Drive, Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Born in St John, N.B., he was the son of the late David and Christina (Clark) MacDonald. Gary was employed for 35 years by the Department of National Defence, as a caretaker. He was a member of the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church. Gary played fastball with many different teams over the years and was quite proud of the fact that they won the Eastern Canadian Fastball Championship. He was also a great fan of the New York Yankees and the Boston Bruins. He enjoyed visiting all his pals in Sydney and Victoria Park, after his retirement. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Bev; his pride and joy, Aron his only son. Also, sisters, Lesley (Ben) Galletta and June (John) Toste; brothers, Craig and Glenn. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Annie MacIntyre, as well as several nieces and nephews. Gary was predeceased by one brother, Brian and his father-in law, Donald MacIntyre. Visitation will be held on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A funeral service for Gary will be held on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the chapel with Major Dan Roode officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Duncan and Johanna (MacAulay) MacKenzie. Murdena was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was involved with the Ladies Missionary Group. She bowled with the Westmount Seniors Club, and was a member of the Westside Legion, Branch 126, Westmount. Murdena is survived by her daughter, Joan MacLeod, Halifax; sons, Ivor, Niagara on the Lake, Ont., Keith (Gail), Calgary, Eldon, Baddeck, and two grandchildren, Ainsley and Braden; sister, Janet (Tim) Wilkinson, Brantford, Ont.; brother, Bernie (Flo) Graham, Collingwood, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Loretta MacKenzie, Georges River, Tena Thompson, Kitchener, Ont., Ruth MacLeod, Kitchener, Ont. and several nieces and nephews. "Forever Missed and Loved" ***************************************** John SMITH Born in: United Kingdom Passed away in: Canada SMITH, John Arthur Henry -79, of Braeshore, Pictou County, and formerly of Big Bras d'0r, Cape Breton and Durham , Ontario, passed away September 9, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. John was the son of the late John "Jack" and Lillian (Parfitt) Smith. He is survived by his wife and partner of thirty years, Rev. Susan (Archer) Smith; sister, Eileen Leedham, and niece, Sally, both of Ontario; his son, David (Margo), Prince Edward Island; and daughter Joanne (Doug) Penny, Nannoose Bay, B.C.; granddaughters, Lauren Smith, Ontario, and Kaylin Penny, Nannoose Bay; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth & Miriam Archer; brothers and sister-in-law, Adrian, Tony, Jennifer, Neil, David, Paul, all of England; close family friends, Rev. Barb Fotheringham, Beth, Dylan, Nelson, and Danny Clarke. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Bill Leedham and Phillip Archer. John was born in Bristol, England on November 18, 1930. He spent the war years there as a child and joined The Royal Air Force Cadets. John's family immigrated to Canada when he was 17, settling in Toronto. John loved life and made the most of each opportunity. He taught First Aid for the Canadian Red Cross for many years achieving the 'Long Term Service Award'. He worked as a printer all his life, having only two employers. His hobbies were watching car races and soccer, reading, and listening to bluegrass/gospel music. After taking early retirement due to health issues, he moved from Scarborough to Durham, Ontario and in 1991 became involved in Knox Presbyterian Church, Walkerton, serving on the Board of Managers. In February of 2003, he became a minister's spouse and moved to Boularderie Island, Cape Breton. He was a member of choirs in Knox, Ross Ferry, and St. James Presbyterian, Big Bras d'Or. John and Susan moved to Braeshore, Pictou County in 2008. A lover of animals, John enjoyed his pets, Tusha and Oscar (both deceased), Jesse and Misty (Boxers) and Twiggy (Cat). They provided him with great joy and wonderful company. John was a devoted husband and a great friend to many, truly a gentle giant. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. Born in Low Point, Victoria Mines, she was a daughter of the late William and Agnes (Carroll) White. Mom was a homemaker most of her married life, who brought up a large family who loved her dearly. Mom was always there for her children and grandchildren. She possessed a great positive attitude and spirit and was a very quiet and kind person. Your loving family" ************************************* Nellie Liutkus Passed away in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 09/09/2010 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother Nellie Liutkus, age 96, a longtime resident of Tobin Road, North Sydney. She passed away in An Cala, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010. Nellie is the daughter of the late Joseph and Antoinette Bardswich, Sydney Mines. Mom was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Gannon Road, and was one of the first lector's in her parish. She was certainly a great woman of faith, who worked diligently for her church. She was a meticulous homemaker, knitter and dressmaker. Mom was very happy tending to her garden up until the age of 89. In her youth, she was originally the only female Cape Breton Post carrier in Sydney Mines and was treasurer for her softball team, travelling in competitions throughout Nova Scotia. She was proud to be at the train station in Sydney Mines to greet Johnny Miles on his return from winning the "Boston Marathon." Mom was a wonderful mother, a loving daughter, wife, sister and great friend to all. She is survived by her sons, Joseph (Maggie), Original, Ont., Bill (Jane), Richmond, B.C., and Michael (Darlene), Doha, Qatar; her daughters, Aldona, at home, and Dr. Joanne Liutkus, Cambridge, Ont.; her 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her sisters, Frances MacNeil, Florence and Flora (Ken) Scott, Florida; sisters-in-law, Dell Bardswich, Millville and Donna Bardswich, Sudbury; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Liutkus in 1984, brothers, Joseph, John, Anthony Bardswich, sisters, Agnes, Alice Amelia and Nancy Bardswich. "Forever my mother Forever my friend" ************************************ Alvina Forbes (MacPherson) Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 09/09/2010 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. The death of Alvina Forbes occurred Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at the Glace Bay Health Care complex. The daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (MacInnis) MacPherson, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was well known and active in her community and had a smile for all she met. She was employed with Chernin Brothers, Woolworths, and Eaton's all in Glace Bay; but she found her passion when she enrolled in a Nursing Assistant program and became employed in Pediatrics at the Glace Bay General Hospital. There she worked with love and joy until an injury forced her early retirement. Over the years, Alvina served as President of the ladies auxiliary of Branch 125 Royal Canadian Legion, played an active roll in the Progressive Conservative Party, attended Orange Lodge and taught Mission Band in her beloved Warden United Church where she remained active until her ill health. She loved a good game of Bingo and a friendly game of cards. Besides her parents, Alvina was predeceased by her husband, Norman Forbes; brothers, James 'Brassie' (Anne), Lem (Mary) and Roy (Kay); sisters, Annie (Tom) Hicks, Dena (Roy) Edwards; and infant brother Neil and infant sister Margaret Rose. Left to mourn her passing is her only child, her daughter and best friend Dena (Sam) Wareham; grandchildren Brent (Amber), Ryan (Michelle), and Katie (Phil MacDonald); and her newest joy, her great grand children, Gracie-Lea and Benjamin Wareham, and Evan and Alex MacDonald. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and an extended circles of cousins all of whom she took great pride in sharing her life's journey. Mike lobster fished for many years and later was employed with Parks Canada, Highlands Links Golf Course. Mike also loved music, fishing, cutting wood and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
