GRACE (NICOL) MACPHEE Lawrence 'Larry' Corkin Olive (Butler) Sheppard Anastasia Tobin Sharon (Buchanan) Boutilier Bessie (Isadore) Christmas ******************************************************************************************************* GRACE (NICOL) MACPHEE Grace (Nicol) MacPhee passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 in The Villages, Florida. Mrs. MacPhee was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia and moved to Lowell, Mass. in 1972 then later to Sanford, Fl and The Villages, Fl in 2010. Mrs. MacPhee retired from Raytheon in 1986 where she enjoyed many fine years in the Burlington and Andover, Mass. facilities. She was a beautiful mother and loved her family unconditionally, always finding a special place in her heart for everyone. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and TV game shows. At any time she could tell you what was happening in world news and local weather. Survivors include her four sons and daughter, James MacPhee and wife Denny Gibbs, Sanford, Fl., John and Mary Anne MacPhee, The Villages, Fl., Jerry and Lorraine 'Chickie' MacPhee, Glace Bay, N.S., Grace (MacPhee) and Jack Sample, The Villages, Fl., Timothy MacPhee and Steve Ahearn, Los Angeles, Ca.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A family service will be held locally and later in Nova Scotia with her family. Her remains will be brought to Glace Bay and buried with her Mom and Dad. "We will miss her very much." ************************************************* Lawrence 'Larry' Corkin Born in: Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 21/08/1929 Passed away in: Scotchtown, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/09/2010 It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Lawrence 'Larry' Corkin of 1 Thomas St., Scotchtown on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at his residence with his loving family by his side. Born Aug. 21, 1929 in Springhill, N.S. to the late Thomas and Daisy (Williams) Corkin. At a young age Larry new the value of hard work, he moved to Toronto, Ont., at the young age of 17 and worked hard to provide for his family. His first job was on the lake boats in Thunder Bay, Ont. from 1949-1952, and then he was employed at Swift Canada from 1952 until his retirement in 1987. In 1989 Larry moved to Cape Breton with his loving wife Mary Miller by his side. He enjoyed his retirement by becoming a member of the Army and Navy Air force Unit 217, New Waterford where he made lifelong friends while playing pool and Wednesday crib. Left to mourn is his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Miller; son, Norman; daughters, Janet and Bernice (Rudy); his brother, Howard Tweed, Ont.; sisters, Evie Barton, Daisy Chapman, all of Springhill, N.S.; grandchildren, Tommy, Corey, Tyler, Carly, Amanda and seven great-grandchildren and his little buddy Alexander, whom he watched over with great love and affection, also his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ferguson, Springhill, N.S., Terry Miller and Robbie Miller (Glen) and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Thomas and Daisy Corkin; he was predeceased by his brothers, Tom, Doug and Norman Corkin; sisters, Hilda Brown, and Lily Rolph; also brother-in-law, Robert Miller and mother-in-law, Jenny Miller. At the request of Larry cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Mclellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with The Rev, Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery Scotchtown. A reception in Lawrence's honour will be held immediately following at the Army Navy Air force Unit 217, Wilson Ave., New Waterford, all are welcome. To place a donation or express your condolences directly to the family please go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. **************************************** Olive (Butler) Sheppard Born in: Whitney Pier, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 29/12/1932 Passed away in: Lingan, Canada Passed away on: 16/09/2010 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Born in Whitney Pier, Olive was the daughter of Walter and Sadie (Bradbury) Butler. Olive was a faithful member of All Saints' Anglican Church in New Waterford. She was a past leader in the church's JA movement and member of the All Saints Ladies Guild. For many years, Olive was the manager of the Schwartz of New Waterford Furniture Store. Upon her retirement, she and Alfie were able to enjoy 42 summers camping throughout Cape Breton and their winters dancing every Saturday night. Olive was an expert crotchetier and knitter and her grandchildren and great-grandson loved to receive mitts, hats and scarves from 'Nana'. Olive is survived by her husband of 59 years, Alfred; her son, David (Lorraine); daughters, Dorothy (Eric) MacDonald and Peggy (Kenny) Forward, all of River Ryan; seven grandchildren, David, Jr., Amanda, Andrew, Jeffrey, Christopher, Kendra and Kent; as well as, a great-grandson, Jack Mombourquette. She is also survived by siblings, Irene Cottiers, New Jersey; Clarence (Aline) Butler, Sydney; Dorothy Manuge, Ontario; Sadie Ells, Amherst and Phoebe Porter, Mira. Besides her mother and father, Olive was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Doreen and most recently her precious great-granddaughter, Autumn Lea Mombourquette; three siblings in infancy and brothers-in-law, Phillip Cottiers, John Manuge, Jules Ells and Eddie Porter. There will be no public visitation. A service to celebrate Olive's life will be held at All Saints Anglican Church on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Vernon W. Reid officiating. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery, followed by a reception in the church hall. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The family would like to express their thanks to the ICU staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and compassion. ********************************************* Anastasia Tobin Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/09/2010 It is with broken hearts and great sadness that we announce the death of our loving mother, Anastasia (MacKinnon) Tobin on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family by her side. Mom was one of 19 children born to the late Ella Mae (Edwards) and John Laughlin MacKinnon. She grew up in Alder Point, Cape Breton, surrounded by a large loving family. In 1941, Mom married Vincent William Tobin. This was the start of her life in Sydney. After she raised her family, she went out to work at St. Rita Hospital. Mom's smiling face was the first one you saw when you walked in the door of the hospital. She worked at the information desk and also did the hospital mail. Mom enjoyed the job and gained many friends during her 16 years of employment there. After mom's retirement, she spent time travelling Europe and parts of Canada spending time with her children. Mom's door was always open. Her children and grandchildren spent many happy moments with her in Cape Breton. Mom was best known for her humour and quick wit. She was a very happy person and always loved to have fun. We will miss that twinkle in her eye. Everyone who met mom loved her company. Her children adored her for all her warm, kind and generous ways. She was a model mother, well respected and will be dearly missed by all. Mom was a devote Catholic and a long standing CWL member of St. Joseph's parish, Sydney. Anastasia will be deeply missed by her eight children, Edith (John), Comox, B.C., Richard, Sydney, Jack, Sarasota, Florida, Audrey (Barb), Vancouver, B.C., James (Marina), Prince George, B.C., Averil (Bill), Sydney River, Cyril (Cindy), Quesnel, B.C. and Ann Seton (Neil), Quesnel, B.C.; brother, Archie (Nora) MacKinnon, Alder Point; sister, Cecilia (Edmund) Gora, San Diego, as well as 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent; four sisters, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth and Loretta; 12 brothers, Dan, Albert, Russell, Collie, Jim, Joe, Doug, Bart, Murray, Raphael, John, Gilbert and two grandsons, Sean and Christopher. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday, Sept. 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Church on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Sharon was born in Glace Bay, daughter of Edward and Alma (MacPherson) Buchanan. Sharon is survived by her husband, John; as well as her children, Eddy (Mary), Jonathan and Samantha; five siblings, Kathy (Ira) Leforte of Upper Nine Mile River, Margaret Anne Buchanan (Dan) of Dominion, Mary (Earl) Beaton of Mira, Edwina (Dan) Muller of Strathmore, Alta. and Lisa (Donald) MacKinnon, Glace Bay. Sharon a.k.a. 'Nannie Presents' is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, Dylan, Brady, Brooke and Angel as well as many nieces, Danielle Leforte, Marci Buchanan, Mira Beaton, Almanda and Kayla Muller, Jillian MacKinnon and nephews Christopher Leforte, AJ. and Michael Pittman, Buchanan Beaton, Cameron Muller, Jeffrey (godson) and Liam MacKinnon. Sharon leaves behind her mother-in-law, Gwen Cole (Steve MacInnis). Sharon completed her hairdressing certification at the Vocational School in 1978 and worked for a number of years at Vallies Hair, Sandy's, Braemore Home, owner of the Tickle Trunk and home care worker with Charlotte's Guest Home. She will be sadly missed by a large extended family and many good and cherished friends. Her life was devoted to her family. Sharon always helped those in need, often doing without to do so. Earlier in life, weekends were spent watching Samantha's' cheerleading, Eddy's basketball, and hockey and spending time with Jonathan, her pillar of strength. She was her children's biggest fan. Sharon gave selflessly to her children through uncompromising love, support and care. She touched the lives of many children. In her life she brought all her friends and family joy and laughter, which they will greatly miss. Those who knew her loved her dearly. Sharon's passing leaves a void that is keenly felt by all and impossible to fill. Sharon's life will be remembered and celebrated on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten's Funeral Home in Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at Patten's Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Cremation has taken place. Born in Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Nancy (Doucette) Isadore of Wagmatcook. She was a member of St. Ann's parish, Membertou as well as St. Anthony Daniel parish. She was the vice president and founder of the Membertou Breast Cancer Survivor Caregivers & Friends. Her door was always open for those in need. Bessie will be sadly missed by all those she touched. She is survived by three daughters, Charlene (Henry), Natalie (Jim), Valerie (Jake); five sons, George (Germaine), Brian, Clayton (Laurie), Noel Jr. (Holly), Mark Anthony, all of Membertou; three sisters, Caroline Bernard, Afton, Flora Robertson, Montreal, Helena Isadore, Ottawa; 30 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a large number of nieces, nephews and godchildren; along with in-laws, Ruth, Mary Julia, Nancy (John H.), Jean, Martha, Steven (Elizabeth), Mike, John Alex and Ronald. She was predeceased by her husband, Noel Christmas Sr. and sons, Maynard and Colin; great-grandson, Kobe Claire; sisters, Mary Bridget, Virginia, Jane Julia and brother Stephen. Visitation for Mrs. Christmas will take place on Sunday after 7 p.m. at 23 Maillard St., Membertou. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment in Membertou Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the C.B. Palliative Care Society or the N.S. Breast Cancer Society.
