Dan MacAskill Barrie Jacob Munro Alfred Thomas Pattingale Allister MacAulay ******************************************************************************************************* Dan MacAskill Born in: Boston, Massachusetts, United States Passed away in: Ferguson's Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 20/09/2010 Dan MacAskill, 82, of Ferguson's Lake Richmond County, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, in the Strait Richmond Hospital. Born in Boston Ma., he was the son of the late Norman and Annie (Connors) Mac Askill. Dan's childhood was spent in Sterling, in the shadow of the Sterling mine. He worked at the heavy water plants of Port Hawkesbury and Glace Bay, before spending 30 years as a crewman for the department of highways, retiring in 1993. Many good times were had as a part of the highway crew with good life long friends to remember all the antics. He was fond of horses, dogs and cats, having many favourite pets over the years. Dan enjoyed a good Scottish concert and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Annie (Mariner); sons, Donnie Mariner (Theresa), John MacAskill (Kathy), Blair MacAskill; daughters, Heather (Roy) LeLacheur, Bonnie (Fraser) Sutherland and Norma (Keith) Martell; 13 grandchildren, Andrea, Pamela, Amanda, Heather, Danielle, Robert, Daniel, David, Kate, Sarah, Cody, Scott, and Austin; three great-grandchildren, Avery, Ella and Kathleena; brothers-in-law, Roy Hubley, William Mariner and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Monty MacAskill and John Fogan; sister, Willena Hubley and granddaughter, Norma Sutherland. Resting in Grand River Presbyterian Church, Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. From where funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. "Every man moves on, but there is no need to grieve; He leaves good things behind." ************************************ Barrie Jacob Munro Born in: Three Brooks, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 22/09/2010 Barrie Jacob Munro, 90, of Beaumont Avenue, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010. Born in Three Brooks, Pictou Co., he was the son of the late Adam and Janie (Burke) Munro. Barrie was a veteran of the Second World War. Until retirement, he was employed as a stationary engineer in the number three power house at Sydney Steel. Barrie was one of the first firefighters at the Sydney River Volunteer Fire Department. His travels took him to many places across North America with his wife of 58 years, Catherine. They enjoyed square dancing with the Tartan Twirlers and a game of tarabish with Mira friends. A quiet man by nature, Barrie loved spending time with family and friends. Surviving are his daughter, Gloria (Gary) Andrews, Mira; son, Glenn (Donna), Sydney; brother, Alex, Pictou; grandchildren, Gary Andrews, Jacqueline MacKay, Cathy MacKenzie, Tanya Andrews, Candace and Shea Munro; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Doris. Barrie was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (MacLeod), son, Donald, sister, Pearl, and brother, William. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Friday, 11 a.m., with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Born in Canso, N.S., Oct. 8, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Sadie (Richards) Pattingale. He was a member of St. Anne's parish, Alder Point. He lived in Sydney Mines the last five years. Dad was a fisherman most of his life. He loved the ocean. He also worked at Marine Atlantic for a period of time. He enjoyed playing cards and darts, and spending time with his friends and family, who will miss him dearly. He is survived by daughters, Linda (Adrian) Pendergast and Jacqueline (John) Bonnar, both of Point Aconi, Karen (James) Rice, Sydney Mines, and Debbie Gillard, North Sydney; sons, Floyd (Linda), Point Aconi, Murray (Margaret), Pleasant Bay, Lawrence, Port Hawkesbury, and Raymond, Halifax. He is also survived by brothers Gordon, Cambridge, Ont., and Alvin, Alder Point; sisters, Georgina Lovell, Florence, and Pearl (Murdock) MacPherson, Alder Point; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Alfred was predeceased by his loving wife, Sabina (MacLean), brothers, Nelson, Raymond and Bill, and sisters, Evelyn MacNeil, Eileen Clarke and Doris MacDonald. Visitation for Alfred Pattingale will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Friday, Sept. 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass celebrating his life will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, Alder Point, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Bras d'Or. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. *************************************************** Allister William Mccaulay Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 20/09/2010 Regretfully and with sadness we announce the passing of Allister Macaulay which occurred on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Facility, Glace Bay. Born in Glace Bay in 1921, he was the eldest son of John Davis and Kate MacDonald Macaulay. Allister was instrumental along with his parents in building the business known as MacAulay's Hennery and took over as president when his parents retired to Florida. He then decided to pursue other interests and handed the presidency over to his brother, Jack and went on to become a successful automobile salesman, retiring in 1990 after 24 years of service. Allister was a veteran of the Second World War serving in England for five years. Allister is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, the former Hannah MacDougall; son, Terry; two brothers, Jack and Donald; and a sister, Helen. Besides his parents, Allister was predeceased by his brother, Fraser and two sisters, Margaret and Marion. Visitation for Allister MacAulay will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24 at Knox United Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. John Findlayson officiating. Interment will be in St. Anne's Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall, all are welcome. Donations in Allister's memory may be made to a charity of choice.
