Born Feb. 5, 1917, in Cains Mountain, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late Murdock and Gladys (MacAulay) Gillis. Kay married her husband, Murdock Dan MacPherson on Sept. 28, 1940, and moved to Sydney, where she and Murdock spent 49 years together. She was trained as a CNA and worked at the Sydney City Hospital in the newborn nursery until its closure, when she retired. She was a member of Westminster Bible Presbyterian Church, where she was active in church activities and was one of the original members of the Catherine Ferguson Missionary Society. Surviving are her daughter, Colleen MacPherson, Ontario; her son, Jack (Nancy) MacPherson, Halifax; five grandchildren, Nadine, Aaron and Sarah MacPherson, Andy and Josh Buckle and two great-grandchildren, Grace Katherine and Eve Katherine. Also surviving are her sister, Ellen MacNeil, Baddeck; her special nephew, Francis 'Frankie' MacNeil and many nieces, nephews, greatnieces and greatnephews. Besides her parents, Kaye was predeceased by her husband, Murdock in 1989, a sister, Murdel and two sisters in infancy. Visitation for the late Kaye MacPherson will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Steven Welch officiating. Burial to follow in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Westminster Church, the Catherine Ferguson Missionary Society or the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. **************************************** JoAnne Milley Passed away in: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 27/09/2010 JoAnne Milley Ottawa Peacefully in Ottawa on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, lost her brief struggle with cancer, at the age of 67 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary (Flynn) and Greg McVarish and by her husband, Billy. She is survived by her brothers, Johnny (Arlene), Darryl (Beverly) and Terry. She was a loving mother to Susan (Gerry), Greg and Keith (Ella). She was grandmother of Carla, Carl, Tracy, Colin, Brett and Keith and great-grandmother of Max. She was adoptive grandmother to James and Heather. She was known to many, in recent years, as Grandma. JoAnne moved to Ottawa in March of 1999 to help care for her grandchildren. She greatly enjoyed reading, tried her luck at many a bingo game. She loved to bake and to cook and took great pleasure in chatting with her dearest friend, the recently deceased, Bev Coady. She returned to Cape Breton for a few visits with those that mattered most to her, her son and his family, her brothers and their families, her granddaughter and her friends; and was always sad to get back on the plane leaving Cape Breton behind. At JoAnne's request there will be no visitation or service. A private family graveside service is planned. Smith, passed away peacefully in hospital in Campbellford, Ont., Friday, Sept. 10 at the age of 72. She is survived by her husband, Ewen Smith of Campbellford; daughter, Kathy Thompson (George) of Stirling, Ont.; sons, Lauchlin (Sonia) Smith of Edmonton, Alta. and Leslie (Leonor) Smith of Prince George, B.C. She will be missed by grandchildren, Patrick, Emma and Ericka and many other members of the Smith and MacMillan families. She was predeceased by her parents, Denina and Allan MacMillan and by siblings, Lauchlin MacMillan, Margaret MacDonald, Christine Cameron and Neilena Gillis. Jean was born in Inverness, N.S. She spent the majority of her life in Nova Scotia before moving to Campbellford. Cremation has taken place in Campbellford and Jean will be buried at a later date in Cape Breton. If desired, donations may be made to the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation; the Palliative Care Unit or Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital; Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton; or the Canadian Cancer Society. *************************************** Joseph Campbell Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 25/09/2010 Joseph Blaise Campbell passed away at the QEII hospital in Halifax on Sept. 25, 2010 at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Sidney Campbell (deceased Oct 2005) and Eva (Tromans) Campbell (deceased Oct. 2008). He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Davis,Crossman), in Feb. 2010. Jo loved his social outings to Tim Hortons daily, where he befriended many patrons and staff. In his earlier years, Jo spent some time in the army, worked as an attendant at the Cape Breton Hospital and drove a school bus for the Cape Breton School Board. He acted as cub leader, and more recently, volunteered along with his wife on several boards related to social issues. He is survived by a stepson, Steven Crossman (Dartmouth); three sisters, Margaret (Ralph) Trenchard, Susan Campbell, Charlotte (Bruce) Mortimer, all from Sydney. He also left behind a special friend, Earle Hickey, who Jo considered family. Earle along with his wife Nicole and family took care of Jo during his illness. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Born in Scotchtown, he was a son of the late Cecil and Myrtle (Richardson) Price. Bill was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. He worked for 39 years with Devco in Nos. 12, 26 and Lingan Colliery until his retirement in 1988. Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting in his favourite spots, Glengarry and Framboise. Surviving are a daughter, Carol (Peter) MacNeil, Dominion; sons, Scott (Joyce), Glace Bay, Joe (Thelma), Fredericton, N.B.; sisters, Shirley Chopeck, Scotchtown, Dorothy Preston, Bolton, Ont., Eva Ryan, New Waterford; six grandchildren, Dillan, Mitchell, Robert, Michelle, Peter and Erin; four great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (MacNeil) and a sister, Ella Williamson. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Viola, a resident of Donkin Highway, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital after a two year battle with lung cancer. Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Edward Allan and Mary Ann (McNeil) Smith. In earlier years, Viola was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Reserve Mines and in more recent years had been a member of St. Gregory's parish in Donkin. Viola was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be truly missed. She enjoyed playing bingo and looked forward to her weekly card games with her friends at the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family; her specialties were baking bread and making fudge. In her spare time she watched game shows and loved Larry King Live. Viola was a very strong willed and inquisitive lady who loved to be kept busy and to the end she never lost her sense of humour. Viola will be forever missed by her devoted husband of 57 years, Duart; daughters, Margie (Eric) MacLeod, Stratford, Ont., Patsy (Ike) Hayes, Birch Grove; sons, Billy (Sandra), Broughton Road, David (Suzie) Gardiner Road; grandchildren Steven, Billy, Lisa, Angela, Tyler, Jenna, Anthony, Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Haille, Lukas, David, Hayden, Shayne, Brycen, Nathan, Shaylee and many nieces and nephews. Bernie was born on Sept. 8, 1953 in New Waterford to the late Alfred and Roberta MacLean. Though Bernie never married or had children of his own, he loved his goddaughter/niece, Tara Lynn, as if she were his own. Bernie also loved his two dogs, Roberta and Regan, who he took everywhere. Bernie was an avid sports fan who loved his New York Yankees and L.A. Lakers. He played floor hockey in the men's league for many years with the Gaetan Hawks and was also known to play darts with many friends and family at the old Cavalier Tavern. Bernie worked for Devco for many years at the Lingan Phalen and Prince collieries. He is survived by his eight brothers, Charles 'Puggy' (Myrtle); Francis 'Crow' (Mary); Gerald 'Skinny' (Joanne); Clifford 'Bug' (Susie); Dale 'Mugs' (Linda); and Robert 'Yacky' (Joanne) three, sisters, Lynda (David) Syms, Darlene and Sharon (Eckie) MacNeil. He will be truly missed by his sister, Lynda who was more than a sister to Bernie and he looked up to her like a mother and his special brother-in-law, David who was like a true brother to him. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and many great friends. Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, (862-7500), on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010.
