Herbert Holmes Shannon Mary 'Millie' (Pyke) MacDonald Catherine Chisholm Gerard MacDonald Sally Garland ******************************************************************************************************* Herbert Holmes Shannon Passed Away In: Sandfield, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 02/06/2011 Sadly we, the family, announce that Herb passed away peacefully Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Herb was the third son of the late Herbert 'Bert' and Johanna (MacNeil) Shannon, Sydney River. Herb enjoyed taking on many a new venture, living life to the fullest and sharing a good laugh with his family and many friends. Some family fondly referred to him as "Uncle Buck." Prior to his retirement in 2005, he and his wife Mary Lou Aucoin, owned and operated Pewter Prezents Gift Shop in Halifax, N.S. Upon retiring they moved back to their Cape Breton roots on the Mira River. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Mary Lou Aucoin; sons, Jeff (Natalie), Goose Bay, N.L., Glenn (Wanda Fraser), Halifax; daughter, Tracey, Toronto; grandsons, Liam and Quinn, Goose Bay, Andrew and Matthew, Halifax; stepsons, Ken Aucoin (Gerald Crowell) and Doug Aucoin, Toronto; along with Holly, his canine pal. Herb leaves behind his siblings, Greg (Cari), Palm Desert, Calif., Joe (Ruth) Long Point, N.S., Stephen (Judi), Kanata, Ont., Jayne (John) Reid, New Glasgow, Frank (Hye Won), Toronto, David (Brenda), New Glasgow, John (Ingrid), Cole Harbour, Jim, Sydney, Terry (Janine), Howie Centre; as well as one aunt, several uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation for Herb will be held Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service celebrating Herb's life will take place 11 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2011, in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Paul MacGillivray officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Millie peacefully passed away at her home with her loving family at her side on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Pyke and was a member of St. Leo's Church in Glace Bay. Millie had a great sense of humour and she loved the summers, especially taking her children swimming. All children whether they were extended family or neighbourhood children called Millie "Ma". She will be sadly missed by her sons, Francis, Gerry (Adeline), Ronnie (Heather), all of Glace Bay, Paul, Ontario, Robert (Rochelle), Halifax; daughters, Mary (Michael), Marg (Robert), both of Glace Bay; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren that she loved dearly; brother, Georgie, Ontario; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Sanford, son, Michael, two sisters and four brothers. In honoring Millie's wishes cremation has taken place. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Online condolences to the MacDonald family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ***************************************** Catherine Chisholm Born In: Bridgeport, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 20/05/1915 Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 02/06/2011 The late Catherine Chisholm passed away peacefully on the morning of June 2, 2011, at the Highland Manor Nursing Home, Neils Harbour, N.S. Born in Bridgeport, N.S., she was the daughter of the late James and Minnie (McCormack) MacNeil. She was predeceased by her husband, Allan Joseph Chisholm. Kaye is survived by her daughters, Annette (David F. Alexander), Saint John, N.B., and Diane (Hugh Savoy), Sydney; brother, Stanley MacNeil, Ontario; two grandchildren, Brock and Ariane Alexander and one great-grandchild, Olivia. Kaye was one of only two girls in a family of 14 and was predeceased by four brothers who died in infancy, Adrian, James, John, and Joseph. She was also predeceased by brothers, Andrew, Charles 'Chas', Alphonseus 'Phonse,' Michael, Peter, Gregory and Ignatius and her only sister, Mae Power. Kaye moved to Ontario with Mae during the Second World War and worked in a munitions plant as her part in the war effort. She subsequently married Allan Joseph Chisholm of Judique, Inverness County, and lived with him in Sydney's north end until his death in 1990. Kaye had many hardships to overcome, especially the death of her mother when Kaye was seven and the family was for the most part separated, the sudden death of her husband Allan Joe, her battle with cancer, the care of her sister who had Alzheimer's disease and her own later struggle with the same affliction. Throughout it all Kaye maintained her faith and her humour. A devout member of Sacred Heart parish for over 50 years, Kaye will be remembered for the way she always put other people first as well as for her impish sense of fun and her pride in family and home. The family would like to express their gratitude to the entire staff of the Highland Manor Nursing Home for the solicitude and kindness with which they treated Kay over a six-year period. Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Saturday, June 4, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a private family funeral service to be scheduled at a later date. Devoted son of Mary (Cameron) MacDonald of Saint John and the late Alexander MacDonald. Gerard was born in Saint John, February of 1961. Besides his loving mother, Mary; he is survived by brother, Lewis MacDonald (Lynn Berry) of Saint John and sister, Sheila MacDonald (Angus Maloney) of Port Hastings, N.S.; one nephew, Angus Hovey; several aunts, uncles and cousins of Cape Breton Island and friends. Gerard was predeceased by his father, Alexander MacDonald. In earlier years Gerard was a cook and worked in work camps out west. He loved nature and helping those in need.
