Born at South Harbour, N.S., Dec. 6, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Alex L. and Margaret (Fitzgerald) Dixon. Mom was a dedicated, caring and compassionate wife and mother. She was a homemaker all her life devoted to raising her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom spent her leisure time enjoying her favourite pastime quilting and knitting, which she was very talented at. She was also an avid card player, particularly many great games of 58. She loved being outdoors tending to her plants, picking berries and spending time at her and Dad's favourite place, Black Brook. Mom is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Alex) MacEachern, Baddeck, Rose Rambeau, Smelt Brook, Myrtle (Vince) Galati, Ontario, Colleen (Cecil) Dunphy, Ingonish, Jacqueline (Max) Fraser, Middle River; son, Bernard (Giselle) Gwynn, South Harbour; daughter-in-law, Vera Gwynn; son-in-law, Ralph Williams. Nanny also leaves behind 30 loving grandchildren, 39 adorable great-grandchildren; brothers, Bart Dixon, Ontario, and Fr. Omar Dixon, SFM, Brazil; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Anthony Paul Gwynn (2001), her daughter, Margaret, her son, Clifford, brothers, Thomas and James, a sister in infancy, and son-in-law, Peter Rambeau. In honoring Mom's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Parish Church, Dingwall on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Everyone is welcome to join us for a reception at the church following the service. Private interment in the parish cemetery. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.fillmoreandwhitman.com ***************************************** Mary Catherine 'Frances' Christoff Born In: Dominion, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 06/06/2011 Mary Catherine 'Frances' Christoff, 88, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2011, at her home, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, with her devoted daughter by her side. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of John J. McNeil and Sarah (Matheson) MacNeil, the last surviving sibling of her four brothers and two sisters. Frances was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Eugene's parish, while she made Dominion her home. Since making Harbourstone her home she very much enjoyed attending mass with Fr. MacPhee in the chapel. She also was a follower of Mass for Shut-Ins that she faithfully watched weekly. Frances made her life endeavours that of being a proud homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She treasured times spent with family but always had a special adoration for each and every baby she had the opportunity to spend time with and spoil. She cherished her grandchildren and loved to share stories of their achievements from education, vocations, craftiness, special talents to hockey. There were many trips made to the Tasty Treat or McDonalds for burgers, to Horyls for fresh kielbasa for a special care package from Nannie or to buy Halloween treats for children in the family or of the community alike. Generations of Dominion children will remember her for having some of the best Halloween treats in town. Generosity and kindness to all who graced her home was enjoyed by many. Boxing day with family and special friends was always a treasured time when her turkey and cheer was enjoyed each year. Besides her home and family, Frances enjoyed bingo, shuffleboard, darts, card games dances and social gatherings. She loved all music but most especially that of her beloved Danny ODonnel who she enjoyed a kiss from when she attended a live concert. The past four years in her new home she enjoyed and was usually the first one in line for an outing or social gathering. Her days were filled with activities, love and kindness that was so freely given by the staff at Harbourstone. They ensured her final years were that of exceptional quality in every way. Frances is survived by her loving daughter, Arlene (MacPerson) Churney, Dominion; grandchildren, Donna Churney Lordly (Winston), Antigonish, John Churney (Chris), Timberlea, Karen Churney Poulin (Jay), Dominion, Ronnie Campbell (Ronda), Etobicoke; great-grandchildren, Joseph, Sarah, Samuel, Jean-Jacques, Cassandra and Bret; special niece, Anne Louise Weirnikie; special friend, Jenna Leigh Buchanan; along with many other nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husbands, John Mark MacPherson and Stephen Christoff, son, Alexander MacPherson, siblings, Greg, Theresa, Shirley, Fred, Reginald and Neil, grandchildren, Brian and Kevin MacPherson. Louie passed away on Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Glace Bay Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Neil and Dora May (Pickston) MacKay. Louie was a former member of St. Eugene's Church in Dominion. In his early years, Louie was employed with the street department in Dominion and also was a construction worker. He loved his volunteer work with St. Eugene's Church. In his later years, Louie enjoyed bowling, playing cards and time spent with his large family. Louie never missed a family get together. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm 'Mack' and Kathleen (Ross) MacLeod. Norma was a life member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, and Nova Scotia as well as life member of the I.O.D.E (DesBarres Chapter) and in recent years, she enjoyed being a member of Cape Breton Writers' Club. Norma loved well and laughed often. Her summers spent at Ben Eoin were very special times shared with family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Doug MacLeod of North Sydney. McMurray, Mick, Antigonish, Bobby, Ft. McMurray, Susan (Stephen) Doiron, Pomquet, Paula (Marty) Murrin, Halifax, Pam (Richard Lassalle), Vancouver; her grandchildren, Tracey, Alisha, Garrett, D.J., Julie, Skye, Stephanie, Aimee, Andrew, Alynn; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Joseph, Rita, Jean, Tommy, Donnie, Jimmie, Annie and Kathleen and her dear friend, Sadie Kennedy. She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick; sister, Nin. Margie worked in the Pathology Department of St. Martha's Regional Hospital for more than 25 years. Widowed young, she demonstrated the importance of family values and strength of character through her perseverance in single-handedly raising her seven children. She was admired for her pride in her home, positive attitude, subtle wit, and love of animals. He served in Korea with the Royal Canadian Dragoons (Camp Petawawa). In 1957 he joined the 8th Canadian Hussars and served until 1966. George and family were stationed in Hemer, Germany from 1959 - 1963. He was a member of the Korea War Veterans Association. George loved life and was very outgoing, enjoying skating, music, hockey, dancing, fishing, camping and cards. He had a great sense of humour that showed by the sparkle in his baby blue eyes. George is survived by his children, Trudy Collette, Brian Fudge (Susan), Janet Daniels, Dawn Lester (Michael) and Kenny Fudge. George is also survived by his wife, Ada Fudge (Oldford) and sister, Olive Moustos (Teddy). He will be lovingly remembered by his many grandchildren and great-granddaughter; sisters-in-law, Connie and Lynne; many nieces and nephews. George will also be sadly missed by his special friend, Katherine Vincent. George was predeceased by his parents, George W. Fudge (King) and Rachael (Morrison); sisters, Lillian Thompson, Sally Goustus and Alice Nickerson; brothers, Daniel and Watson; sons-in-law, Robert and Lee; brothers-in-law, James, Peter and Donald. Our kind gentle mother, Catherine, was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Mac Intyre) Mac Farlane of South West Margaree. Born on June 7, 1917 she was destined to celebrate her 94th birthday in Heaven with the Church Triumphant. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband Frank on Oct. 26, 1971; her son Robert on Nov. 26, 2004; and her son Gerard on April 22, 2011 (44 days earlier). She was also predeceased by her brothers Archie (Sadie) - Sydney, Malcolm - South West Margaree, Dan (Liz) - Kentville, and Jimmy (in infancy), and by her sister Margaret (Barney) Ficociello - Woburn, MA. She is survived by her four children -Anne (Elmer) Syms, Joseph Mac Kenzie, Mary (Peter) Bren, and Hector (Meryl) Mac Kenzie and daughters-in-law - Lorene Mac Kenzie and Mary Mac Kenzie. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Ma, a lady of great faith and devotion to Our Lord and His Blessed Mother, was a member of the Catholic Women's League for approximately 50 years. As a lady of grace and dignity she was also a staunch supporter of the Gaelic culture being a fluent speaker, writer, and reader of the language. In 1973 she graduated from Xavier College with a diploma in Gaelic teaching, a certification put to use in the education of many young people in the Gaelic language. She was also a strong supporter of the Gaelic society and an active member of the Gaelic choir at its inception and for several years thereafter. In earlier years she was also a member of Saint Theresa's choir. Visitation for our darling mother, Catherine, will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 at TW Curry Funeral Home, 755 George St., Sydney, N.S.
