Jessi was predeceased by her dad, Bobby Sloan. She is survived by Lizzie (Petrie) Sloan of Dominion, the best mother and friend a daughter could have, and companion, friend and protector, Gordie MacLeod of Sydney. Jessi is also survived by big sister Theresa Burt of Sydney, who was there every step and every minute of this journey and by her husband Clem, whose treats were always welcomed; by sister Mary MacIntyre of Bridgeport whose emotional support comforted her heart and whose amazing food nourished her soul, and by her husband Blair whose hugs were always appreciated; by brother John of Dominion whose sense of humor kept her smiling and his wife Lois who was there to do whatever was needed; by baby sister and best friend in the whole world, Diane Gardiner of Hamilton ON, who will remain forever in her heart and by her husband Russell who always made her feel welcome; by sister-in-law June MacLeod-Donald who opened her home, heart and family to give her the strength she so often needed and by her partner David. Jessi will be missed by many loved nieces, nephews and godchildren. Jessi was blessed with old and new friends who have made it possible for her to make this journey with grace and dignity. Jessi's many friends will miss her indomitable spirit and the generosity and kindness she exhibited throughout her life. Jessi was a graduate of MacDonald High School in Dominion and went on to earn her degree at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish NS. She was employed with Coastal Business Opportunities for many years. Her last position, during her illness, was with Service Canada. Special thanks is extended to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for all their care and concern. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2011 at St. Eugene's Parish, Dominion, with internment to follow at St. Eugene's Parish Cemetery. Born in Little Pond she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Ethel Dawe. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, William MacPherson; her children, whom she loved dearly, Brenda, Billy (Irene), Sandra (Gibby), Marty (Sophia) and George (Connie), her grandchildren, whom she adored, Billy, Craig, Lindsay, Carl, Amanda, Rachael, Crystal and Sierra. Also surviving are her brothers Heck (Rose) and Jack (Sally); her sisters Nellie, Cavel, Muriel (Chester), Irene (Nick) and Theresa 'Teecee'. She was predeceased by her brother Gerald. Gertrude lived in Ontario for a number of years and returned home following her retirement. Visitation Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Born in Glace Bay July 31, 1937 he was a son of the late John James 'Jack' and Catherine Kathleen (Nearing) Donovan. Lawrence worked for 30 years with DEVCO; played hockey for many years as goalie with the Colliery and Commercial leagues; was an avid bowler with the Devco Pensioners and many other teams. He was a member of the Glace Bay Y's Men and Women's Club; was a volunteer with many groups including the Dominion Reserve Gardiner Kinsmen Club, Meals on Wheels and the annual Vince Ryan Memorial Tournament; and, was a member of St. Leo's Church. Larry is survived by children, Donnie (Marilyn), John James (Mary), Marie (Bart) Boutilier, Delores (Danny) MacKay, Karen (Cecil) MacNeil, Brenda (John) Poirier and Linda (Kevin) Murphy; 17 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Ronald; special friends, Audrey Nightingale, Joan and Dave Fowler; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Sarah 'Sadie'; daughter, Margie and sister, Ethel Marie Horne. Born in St. Peters, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Effie (Strachan) Ferguson . Mary was predeceased by her devoted husband of 60 years, Allister. She is survived by and was the loving mother of David, Joan (Chris) Faulkner, Kim (Brian) Newell all of Halifax, Karen (Jimmy) Munroe of Sydney. Mary was particularly proud of her grandchildren, Kelly & Jamie Munroe, Jason & Garreth MacRae, Emily & Jenna Faulkner, Rachel Newell, and her great grandchildren Kaitlin Munroe, Sarah & Megan MacRae. Also survived by sister-in-law Miriam Munro, many nieces and nephews. Mary was also predeceased by her eldest son Allister Jr.; brothers Malcolm, John, Raymond and Roy. In her earlier years she was a postmistress at the Sydney River Post Office & was the favourite 'Nana' at Irma's Daycare. Mary was known for her skills in the kitchen & always had a great selection of pies, bread and cookies available. Besides her love of baking for her family, Mary enjoyed a good game of cards. She took up bridge at the age of 80. Mary although seemingly a quiet soul, she had a very keen sense of humour & loved to share a good laugh. A highlight of retirement for Mary and Al was the many winters they spent in Florida with their wonderful gang of friends. A memorial service will be held Monday June 13, in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. ******************************************* Russell 'Dempsey' MacNeil Born In: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 29/10/1923 Passed Away In: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 09/06/2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving father and grandfather, Russell MacNeil, on June 9, 2011, at the Veteran's Wing of Harbour View Hospital, and formerly of 195 Atlantic St., Sydney Mines. Born in Sydney Mines, Russell was the son of the late Margaret (MacNeil) and Donald Anthony MacNeil. One of the founding members of the Parish Council of St. Pius X Church, Russell was a dedicated parish member. Russell was a member of the military police before he served overseas during the war. He belonged to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and served in England, Belgium, France, Holland and Germany during the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 08 in Sydney Mines. Russell (Dempsey) was employed as a rope splicer at Devco for over 40 years, working first in Princess Colliery and later in the Prince Mine. In his younger years, Russell was very outgoing and enjoyed going for his long walks and stopping to meet up with his friends on the bench in town. He was a loving, gentle family man and always looked forward to family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to debate politics and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Expos. More recently, he also enjoyed playing crib with residents of the veteran's wing. Russell will be sadly missed by his sons, Thomas (Jessie), North Sydney, Donald (Barbara), Sydney Mines and Russell (Laurie), Sackville, N.S. and his daughters, Mary Murphy, Florence and Bernadette (Robert) Lovell, Sydney Mines. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Bernadette (Charlie) Johnson, John Murphy, Jillian and Kayla-Beth MacNeil, Jeff and Amy MacNeil, Jeremy and Amber Lovell, Erin and Kristin MacNeil and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Nicolas Johnson. Russell is also survived by his sisters, Mildred Fraser, Sydney Mines, and Patricia Desrosiers, Niagara Falls, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Sadie, in December 2010; brothers, Mike, Roddie, Edward, Dougie, Donald and Roderick; and sisters, Freda, Hildegard, Katie, Eileen and Sadie. Terry was born March 15, 1957, in Halifax, N.S., the son of Alice and George Barron. Terry's life was greatly influenced by his church family and friends. He will always be remembered for his servant's heart. Besides his parents, Alice and George Barron of Mississauga, he is survived by his sister, Sabra Stephens, Mississauga; his sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and Claudio Difede of Milton, Ont.; his sister, Janet Harris, Mississauga, Ont. and many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his brother, Michael; an infant child. A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at the Portico Church in Mississauga, Ont. Maggie passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford with loving family by her side. Born in Glace Bay, Dec. 16, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel (Barrett) Sealey. She was an active member of the Salvation Army Citadel, Glace Bay and she was also a member of the Home League and enjoyed manning the Salvation Army kettles. Maggie enjoyed her many bus trips with her daughter and best friend, Margie to the mall in Sydney. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Margie; sons, Leslie (Patty), Ralph and Tommy. Also surviving are her sisters, Isabel, Marcella and Helen. Maggie was predeceased by her long time companion, Albert Anderson and sisters, Phyllis, Edith and Sally and brothers, David, Richard and stepbrother, Gordon Sealey. Edward left us peacefully at home, on May 14, 2011, after a life of dedication to his wife, children, grand-children, and great-grand-child. Eddy was born in Sydney, N.S. on Dec. 2, 1927, son of the late Salvo and Frances (Lyons) Mizzi. Eddy retired from Firestone after 25 years of working to support his family. He was always the life of the party at gatherings, and was a Jack of all trades. He was an avid reader, especially about his beloved country, Canada. He, along with his wife Anna, did everything they could to give their four children the best lives possible. Loving husband of Anna (Huczyszyn) for 60 years. Dear father of Paulina (Douglas, predeceased) Summerfield, Edward (Bari) Mizzi, Virginia (Robert) Gutauskas, and Cynthia (Tony) Leite. Funeral Mass was celebrated in Hamilton, ON, on Wed., May 18, 2011. ****************************************** Donald 'Gordon' Macaulay Born In: Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 08/06/2011 Donald William 'Gordon' Macaulay, 98, of Baddeck, passed away June 8, 2011 at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Born in Baddeck Bay on Nov. 22, 1912, he was the eldest son of the late Murdock and Annie (MacDonald) Macaulay. Gordon was self-employed all his life. He started his career in sales at the early age of 16 going door to door around Cape Breton Island selling subscriptions to the Family Herald. He later went on to selling life and automobile insurance and in 1949, he opened Macaulay's Garage Limited where he bought, repaired, and sold automobiles. He was also involved in the construction and pulp wood industries. Gordon was a member of Greenwood United Church, St. Mark's Lodge #35 of Baddeck, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and Philae Temple Shriners. In 2000, Gordon was honoured by the Baddeck and Area Business and Tourism Association for his support and interest in community affairs. Gordon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Grace 'Ruth' Baker; son, Gordon (Doreen) Macaulay and daughter, Suzanne (Earl) MacDonald. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher (DeeDee), Jeanette (David), Jonathan (Kelsey), Shauna, and Kimberley (Darcy); five great-grandchildren, Shamus, Grace, Sam, William and Ryder; sisters-in-law, Isobel MacAulay, Evelyn Macaulay; brother-in-law, Bob Curry and many nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his brothers, Alex, Dr. Dougall and Dannie and sisters, Margaret and Isabelle. In honour of Gordon's wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill's Funeral Home and there will be no visitation. A celebration of Gordon's life will be held at Greenwood United Church on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Karen Lynch officiating, masonic service and reception to follow. Family flowers only.
