Born in Somerville, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Jessie (House) Hann. A gifted teacher, Verna taught for over 30 years within the Cape Breton County School Board. She particularly enjoyed her years at Malcolm Munroe Junior High, where she established an extensive art curriculum to the delight of her many students. Her artistic touch was evident in every detail of her work; from her beautiful handwriting, to her many paintings which she humbly shared. Her lifelong love of learning inspired a passion for genealogy in her retirement years, taking her on multiple adventures to Newfoundland, where she enjoyed uncovering the details of her family tree. Verna was predeceased by brother, Cyril and nephew, Donnie. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Larry); grandchildren, Elaine (Gilleasbuig), Suzanne (Ben), Chris and great-granddaughter, Peigi. Also survived by sister-in-law, Phyllis; sister, Irene (Charlie); brother, Earl (Harriet) and her many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed, but fondly remembered for imparting the most important lesson that no classroom could ever contain by living an exemplary life according to the "Golden Rule." Charles was the son of the late George P. and Georgie P. (Bezanson) Robb. After graduating from Dalhousie University, Charles resided in British Columbia. He was employed by Revenue Canada until he relocated back to Sydney where he resided with his family. Chuck will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Born June 17, 1935, he was the son of the late William and Julia (LeBlanc) Quinn. He was a member of St. Stephen's parish, Florence. He is survived by his loving and devoted care giving wife of 54 years, Ann (Barrie); his loving children, Judy (Doug) Robinson, Malaysia, Paul (Terri), Dartmouth, Linda (Carmen), Coxheath, and Kevin (Julie), Texas; grandchildren, Dr. David Quinn, Tara Quinn, Jason Quinn, Leslie Robinson, Cheryl Robinson, Keith Robinson, Carter Quinn and Eric Quinn. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary Fenerty, Florence (Donald) Drake and Anita (Bobby) Anthony; brothers, Alex (Mary), Andrew (Valerie); and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, George Fenerty. As a young man Dan worked, as did many other proud Cape Bretoners, in the coal mines for Devco. Dad led an uncomplicated lifestyle. He liked to play cards, hunt, fish, have a warm house and never liked to be away from Greenhill for more than two days. He also enjoyed many hours with his buddies chatting in the carport. His biggest legacy was leaving behind four loving children and eight grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Wawer and his nurse Sharon MacDonald and all the health care professionals who showed so much compassion in Dad's failing years. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's Church, Florence, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating. Burial in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Nellie (Farthing) Ferguson and the late John Ferguson. She was a dedicated, caring, compassionate, nurse, daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family which includes her loving husband, Graeme and dear children, daughter, Leslye (Henry Dunaj) Pearson and her beloved grandchildren, Callum and Ciara of Montreal; and her sons, David 'Shawn' Pearson, New Bern, N.C., Bruce Pearson, Montreal; and her mother, Nellie Ferguson. Holland, age 67, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Barry died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 in the En Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in St. John's, Nfld., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Frances (Coffin) Holland. Barry had many careers throughout his life, beginning as a purchasing agent with Canadian Motor Industries and the Donkin Mine; executive assistant for Russell MacLellan; and most recently as the Cape Breton representative for Aqua Check/ACD, inspecting water supplies and installing Radon detectors, in many provincial buildings and sites. Barry was a very community minded person who devoted many years as a member of the Kinsmen Club and the North Sydney Forum; he served two terms as a town councilor for the Town of North Sydney, and was instrumental in creating the Northside Industrial Commission. He was a lifetime member of the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney, and served as its secretary treasurer until the time of his death. He was tireless in his pursuit to rebuild the club following the fire which destroyed the former building a few years back, and was very proud of his efforts, and those of many others that have worked so hard to bring it back to life. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Barry had four loves in life, his family, the Yacht Club, camping and spending time on Keith Moores boat, "Bras d'Or Traveller." He will be sadly missed by all his family and many friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian (Carter) Holland; his daughters, Joanne Phillips (Chris) of Ft. McMurray, Allison Holland (Jack Hatcher) of Estmere, Barbara (George) Taylor of Sydney Mines; his son, B.J. (Melanie) of Toronto; his dear grandchildren, Jonathan, Beth, Justin, Morgan, Sarah, Austin, Chance, Nolan; his sister, Gwen Orde of Saskatchewan; by his father and mother-in-law, with whom he was very close, Ches and Jean Carter, North Sydney, and all the members of the Carter family. Born on Sept. 15, 1940, Alexander was the eldest child of the late Flora Mae (Gillis) and Peter F. MacLean of Iona, Victoria County. He graduated Saint Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, 1962 and Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, 1966. In 1976 he chose to leave the priesthood and enjoyed a life long career with educational career colleges. His interests were music, sports and politics. His first musical recording was while he was a student at St. F.X. when Celtic Records produced The Piano Stylings of The Cape Breton Scot, believed to be the first recorded album of piano music devoted to the music of the Cape Breton Scot. His most recent Celtic piano CDs are Across the Ocean Wave and Lake Bras d'Or. Alexander leaves his sisters, Anne (Lawrence Nestman), Florence (Joseph Kanary), Theresa, Helen (James MacDonald), all of Halifax; nieces and nephews, Lara, Natasha, Peter, Leah, Lucy, Shamus and Scott along with seven grand nieces and grand nephews. Also surviving are his supportive paternal aunts, Mary MacDonald, Baddeck, Teresa Morrison, Sydney and Nancy Gallagher, Florida. The family would like to thank David and Somaieh Woodworth and their children for their love and friendship to Alexander in Toronto. Also thanks to Peter and Gail Dykstra of Toronto for their support and endearing friendship to Alexander. Alexander will be remembered as an optimistic, loving, generous brother and a true and loyal friend.
