Sarah, a longtime resident of Victoria St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3, 2011, at the Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, Sarah was the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret (McNeil) Connolly and was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. Sarah was a beautiful lady who truly enjoyed all the chores of raising her children in a loving home. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends in 'The Happy Go Lucky Club', dancing with her husband Dennis and laughing, but most she will be remembered for her quick wit which she kept until the end, her love of chocolate and spending time with her family. Sarah will be sadly missed by her loving children, daughters Laraine Penney, Glace Bay, Denise (Glenn) MacDonald, Sydney; sons Alonzo, Glace Bay, with whom she resided with for 15 years prior to her move to Victoria Haven Nursing Home, and son David (Sharon) Calgary; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers John (Mae), Thomas (Joan), both of Ontario; sisters Rose Stevenson, Glace Bay, Shirley Aucoin (Andrew Chesal), New Waterford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Sarah was predeceased by her husband Dennis (1992); brothers Neil Thomas 'Buster', Patrick 'Chick'; son-in-law Allie Penney and daughter-in-law Sharon Deveaux. Visitation will be held Monday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Anne's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church foyer, all are welcome. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Oakley and Josephine (Lukow) Hill. In his younger years, he was employed as a truck driver. He was known as a kind and friendly person, who will be missed by all who knew him. Lionel is survived by his brother, Basil (Martha) Hill, Sydney, their children, Stephen, Amanda and Christopher; his daughter, Lisa, Sydney Mines, grandson, Brandon. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Josephine (Elliot). Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of ***************************************** Mary MacInnis Passed Away In: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 02/06/2011 It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of a dear wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Anne (MacNeil) MacInnis of Mary Street, Glace Bay. Nanny passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer and COPD at the age of 73. Born in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late John and Thecla (Pitts) MacNeil. She was a dedicated, caring, compassionate wife, mother, grandmother and friend. In earlier years, she was employed by Milne's IGA and operated D&M Dairy on Main Street with her husband. She devoted her life to raising her children and in her role as Nanny to her 9 grandchildren. She was well known for her quick wit and humor. Her favorite pastimes included cooking, scratching lotto tickets, Facebook, exchanging e-mails with family and friends and she was also an extreme "Corrie Fan" (Cornation St.) from the very beginning. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 49 years, Doug, and their loving children, Jacqueline (Donald Headley); Betty (Ricky Reddick); all of Glace Bay, Doug (Marion), Kingston, Ontario; and Jay (Aliesje) Glace Bay; grandchildren, Richard, Taylor, Brittany, Jordan, Keagan, Tyrone, Conner, Graham, and Darcy. She is survived by her sister, Claire and brothers, John Bosco, Glace Bay and John C., London, Ont.; sister-in-law, Patsy MacNeil, Sydney; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Betty Anne, Mary Flo and brothers, Joe, Jimmy, Ninian, Maurice and A.J. MacNeil. In honouring Nanny's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Born in Dominion, Cape Breton in 1931, she was a daughter of the late Mary Koster and John Cherpak. As a young girl, Anna left home at 16 to study music and violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She was among local artists winning awards in Sydney for many years. Her musical talents as a violinist were enjoyed at functions including operettas, musical teas, recitals, festivals, and benefits. She also won the title of "Ms. Glace Bay". Anna graduated from Normal College in Truro to become a teacher in 1951. She taught for 12 years at St. Catherine's School (Halifax) before she started her family. She was a woman of great faith, a devoted Catholic and long-time member of Saint Lawrence parish (now Saint Benedict parish), Halifax. She is survived by her son, David Tarasuk, Shubenacadie; daughter, Joy Tarasuk, Halifax; grandson, Anthony; granddaughter, Alexandria; sister, Eustene Cherpak, Reserve; brother, John Cherpak, Sydney; nieces, Mary Rachelle, Amanda and Lindsay; cousin, Joyce MacMullen. Anna was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 48 years, Roy and son, Darryl. She and Roy were affectionately known by many friends and family as "Nana and Poppy". Her love and devotion to her family will be forever remembered. Funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 27, in Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax, officiated by Fr. Owen Connolly, and concelebrant, Fr. Mark Cherry. Born in Glace Bay, Caroline was the daughter of the late Reginald and Mary (MacAdam) McNeil. She was a member of St. Joseph's parish in Reserve Mines. At the time of her death, Caroline was employed at Stream in Glace Bay. She enjoyed working with computers and refurbishing them for the less fortunate. She loved to spend time with her dogs and talking on the phone for hours with family. Caroline is survived by her companion and life long friend, Bobby Frison; loving son, Robert; sister, Cheryl McNeil (Doug) of Kitchener, Ont.; brothers, Reggie of Reserve Mines, Kerry (Tara) of Glace Bay and several nieces and nephews. She was also survived by her cousin and best friend, Tossie Saccary of Dominion, who she loved like a sister. Besides her parents, Caroline was predeceased by a sister, Caroline Elizabeth. Visitation will be held at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday June 5, 2011. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Dougall and Maude (Williams) Morrison. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Roger J. 'Jack'; children, Robin, New York and Shauna Prudhomme, Waterford; her grandchildren, Chelsea and Cameron and her two sisters, Jessie O'Keefe of Sydney and Camella Osborne of Windsor, Ont. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Veronica MacNeil and Louise Gushue, both from Windsor, Ont. and her brother, Joe Morrison from Huntington Beach, Calif. After training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, Mary moved to Michigan in 1954 where she worked as a registered nurse for over 30 years. An avid traveler, Mary also enjoyed golf, cooking, reading, bridge and her garden. Cremation has already taken place.
