Norman lived a faithful life for the Lord Jesus Christ, the One who bought and paid for him at Calvary. He was a member of the Gospel Hall, Sydney Mines, for almost 40 years. He worked as a coal miner and in earlier years a fisherman. He is survived by his cherished wife, Joyce (Fry) Brown of 38 years and his five children who loved him dearly, Christian (Kori), Creston, B.C, John (Chantelle), Eastern Passage, N.S., Aubrey (MacKenzie), Calvin (Tiffany); and only daughter, Cora Brown, who all reside in Fort McMurray, Alta. Also surviving are his sisters, Kathy (Eric) Williams, Veronica (Paul) Gove, Betty (John) Fraser, Alice (William) King; and brother, James (Mary) Brown; and many nieces and nephews. Also his beloved grandchildren, Noah, Dannika, Alexandra, Raquel, Gabrielle and Elizabeth. Norman was the son of the late James (Alice) Brown of Sydney Mines. He was predeceased by sister, Christina (Gordon) MacDonald, brothers, John David Brown, Jimmy Brown, and brother-in-law, Francis Williams. Norman was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved spending time at his cabin in Orangedale. He also enjoyed reading and playing hymns on his guitar. He was so well loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held at the Gospel Hall, Yorke Street, Sydney Mines, today (Monday, March 21) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place at the same location on Tuesday, March 22 at 2 p.m. with David Swan officiating. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel and Margaret Anne (Holmes) Ferguson. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Frank retired as a engineer with, Sydney Steel Corporation. He was a veteran of the Second World War, who served in many countries overseas. Frank is survived by his wife, Mary (Bartlett); daughter, Elizabeth Allen, Sydney; son, Kenneth, Sydney; sister, Georgie MacGibbon, Sydney; a brother, Angus (Alberta) Ferguson, Sydney; and grandchildren, Ryan Ferguson, Jordan Ferguson and Lee Allen. He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Ferguson, and triplets in infancy Annie, George and Fraser Ferguson. Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. He passed away Friday at his home in Halifax. Frank was born in Sydney Mines, Oct. 23, 1941. He was the son of the late Archibald and Magdeline (Ronayne) Young. He most recently resided in Halifax close to his family for the past four years. Frank was employed for many years with the Sydney Mines Bargain Store, and later started Frank's Carpentry. Second to his family, his loves were music and dancing. Frank is survived by his three children, 'the lights of his life', son, Craig (Juanita); daughter, Cynthia (Ron) McKenzie, both of Upper Tantallon; daughter, Angela (Brad) Murphy, Hammonds Plains; two cherished grandsons, Ethan Young and Aedan McKenzie. He is also survived by former wife and friend, Pauline Carey, Georges River; sister, Magdeline Anthony; brothers, Joe , Francis and Daniel Leo, all of Sydney Mines, and Alexander, Sydney; special cousin, Donnie (Marg) Young, Sydney Mines. Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by his twin brother, Winston, brothers, Archie and Charlie, sister, Anna Theresa in infancy, and nephews, Wayne and Donnie Young. Peggy passed over peacefully in her 87th year at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on March 18, 2011. She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Aubrey, two brothers, sister and friends from all over the world. She is survived by her brother, Ephraim Price of Moncton. Peggy will be lovingly remembered by her family, Pamela; her sons, Ira, Jacob, Zachary and Joshua; Ira, his wife Brenda and their children Jason and Sarah; Heather, her husband John, and her children Shelby and Jared; Trish, her husband Gary, their children Kyle, Matthew and Jordan. Her grandchildren have greatly appreciated the presence of a grandmother who always saw the good in them - it was Grandma's gift. She felt truly blessed by her sweet great-grandchildren, Cohen, Khloe, Avery and Carter. Mom was 'Grandma' to many close friends in the Baddeck community. Peggy dedicated her life to family in Moncton, and later in Montreal, Winnipeg, and Peterborough. As the wife of the project engineer on power installations, she created a warm home and a close-knit community around her and her family in Trinidad, Nigeria, India, Saudi Arabia, Alberta and Nova Scotia. Peggy and Aubrey were comfortable living and travelling all over the world and developed many long-lasting friendships. A family service to celebrate of Mom's life will be held later at the cottage in Wreck Cove, a place given to us by Mom and Dad and long held dear by the family. We would like to thank her home care workers for their incredible support. Baddeck hospital, Dr. Chow and the nurses treated all of us with the utmost care and respect. A special thanks to Louise and Daryl, Janie and Angus, and Bev and John, for their love, support and many fine meals, always with dessert for Mom. Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. ********************************** Dan Yakimchuk Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 29/09/1929 Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 19/03/2011 Dan Yakimchuk 1929-2011 Sydney Dan Yakimchuk passed away at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Born in Sydney, Dan was the son of the late Daniel and Madeline (Baker) Yakimchuk. In addition to his parents, Dan was predeceased by his brother, Richard, and sisters, Georgina (in infancy) and Agnes (McCormick). Dan is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Clotilda Douglas Yakimchuk; four children: Dale Anne (John Edwards), Dena Kyryluk (Mike), Madeline, and Danny (Connie McPherson); and five step children: Sharon (Isa Ford), Carl (Margaret), Valerie O'Neale (Cyrus), Leslie (Dockery Shaw), and Kenny (Lynnette). Dan is also survived by sisters Dorothy, Julia Borshis, Angela Kavanaugh, Mary Morris, Rose Murphy, Elizabeth MacDonald, and Teresa Penny (Ronald); one brother, Charles; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to his career at Sydney Steel, Dan was a lifelong learner, community activist, trade unionist, civic leader, and, in his later years, seniors' rights advocate. Dan served as Sydney's Ward 5 Alderman for two terms in 1972 and 1979 and was involved in many community organizations, including the Cape Breton Council of Senior Citizens and Pensioners, Cape Breton Labour Council, Sydney Whitney Pier Credit Union, Joint Action Group, Cape Breton District Health Authority, and the Nova Scotia Task Force Investigating Elder Abuse, and many others. Dan volunteered his time to various community groups, including Loaves and Fishes and Open Your Heart Shelter. He received many awards for commitment to public service, including the Certificate of Appreciation (NS Human Rights Commission, 1972), Nova Scotia Remarkable Seniors Award (1998), Activist of the Year (Council of Canadians, 2002) and Volunteer - Outstanding Service/Contribution to the Community (Federal Government, 2003). Dan's sense of community is best described in his own words: "I am so proud of being a Canadian and a Cape Bretoner. I think I owe it to the community and to my island to put something back in." There will be no visitation. His remains have been donated to Dalhousie University (Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology) for the advancement of medical education and research. We sincerely thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their exemplary care to Dan and his family. A celebration of Dan's life will take place at a future date. Matthew was the only son of Calvin and Sharon (Curry) MacDonald of Longbeach, Port Morien. He was a 2006 graduate of Glace Bay High School and he attended heavy equipment operator courses at NSCC Port Hawkesbury. He was a lobster fisherman on his father's boat; played hockey from 1993 through 2006 with Glace Bay minor hockey; and, Matthew loved hunting, fishing and snowboarding with best friends, Nathan Susan and Wesley Forward. He is survived by his loving parents, Calvin and Sharon; only sister, Lindsay (Andrew), at home; grandparents, Kevin and Eunice Curry, Black Brook; aunts, Colleen (Wayne) Spencer, Black Brook, and Lois (Austin) Venedam, Antigonish; great aunt "Jo", Sydney River; cousins, Laura and Emily Venedam, Hillary and Jenna Spencer and Joanne Adshade. He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, William and Agnes MacDonald of Port Morien and maternal great-grandparents, John and Violet Campbell, Port Caledonia. Matthew - "we will love and remember you forever" ********************************* Angus Stephen Head Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 18/03/2010 It is with great sorrow the family of Angus Stephen Head announce his sudden passing after a short but courageous battle with an illness on March 18, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Leo and Josephine (Feit) Head. Angus was a member of the former St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. He was a loving, caring family man whose greatest joy was his four children whom he loved very much. Angus enjoyed going fishing, hunting and going for long drives in the country with his family. He also looked forward to his visits with Julien Frison at the horse barn. Angus will be remembered by many as a big teddy bear who had a smile that could light up a room. He had a generous nature and would do anything for his family and others that knew him. Angus had a laugh for everyone and could brighten your day no matter what you were feeling. He was one of a kind and loved by many. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Kearney, Scotchtown; children, Zachary, Mary, Stephen, and Joella, all of Scotchtown; sister, Theresa (Mickey) Hogan, New Waterford; nephew, Marshall. He had a special bond with uncles, James (Lisa) Fortune, Glace Bay, Joe (Greta) Fortune, New Waterford, and Ralph (Sandra) Head, New Waterford. Angus was an amazing man and will be forever remembered by all those who loved him. He was predeceased by parents, Leo and Josephine (Feit) Head, New Waterford. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass of celebration for Angus will be held Tuesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery at a later date.
