John 'Joe the Goat' MacKenzie Margaret (Currie) Morrison Mary Gero Paul Rogers Marie (Strickland) Watts Lillian Magdellen Budden Peter Gillis ******************************************************************************************************* John 'Joe the Goat' MacKenzie Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 08/11/1933 Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 09/03/2011 John Joseph 'Joe the Goat' MacKenzie, 77, of Emerald Street, New Waterford, passed away March 9, 2011, at home. Born Nov. 8, 1933 in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mildred (Boutilier) MacKenzie. A pipefitter by trade, Joseph travelled to various places throughout Canada for employment, but he always considered New Waterford home. He is survived by his daughter, Shelley (Derick Honig), Halifax; her mother, Arlene. His pride and joy his grandchildren, Hannah and Christian; his sisters, Theresa (Fitzpatrick), Nellie (Gillis), with whom he resided, Charlotte (Neil MacKenzie); his brother, Freddie, (Sharon); nephew, Gerard and Wendy (Gillis), along with all his other nieces, nephews and extended family. Predeceased by his mother, father and sisters, Hilda (Gillis) and Evelyn (Campbell). One of 'Joe the Goat's' famous sayings was "you can't fatten a thoroughbred." His sharp wit and cunning sense of humour will be greatly missed by his family and friends. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass of Celebration will take place at the Parish Church of St. Leonard's at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 with Fr. Douglas MacDonald officiating. Gillis Memorial Lodge, Eldon, Prince Edward Island, at the age of 91. Left to mourn her passing are daughters, Catherine Morrison, Toronto, Joan (Leo) Walsh, P.E.I., Neila (George) Auld, P.E.I., Jeannie Morrison, Calgary; and daughter-in-law, Jane-Ellen (Cliff) Sadler, P.E.I. Also left to mourn are 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Marc) Forestier, Jeffrey and Christina Burke, Margaret Anne (Robert Haggis) Walsh, Leigh Ellen, James, Stephen and John Fraser Walsh, Erin Jean Morrison, Blaine and Evan Auld; three great-granddaughters, Chloe and Olivia Forestier and Clare Marie Haggis; and sister-in-law, Flo Nesbitt, Ontario. Margaret was predeceasd by son, Dr. Milton Fraser Morrison, infant granddaughter, Angelina Marie Walsh, parents, Neil and Catherine (MacNeil) Currie of Reserve Mines, brothers, Michael, John, Frank, Malcolm, Charles and sisters, Sister Angelorum, Florence MacDonald, Mary Cordoba and Sadie Jones. She was a long-standing member of the St. Anne's Society in St. Anne's parish, Glace Bay, and a member of the Catholic Women's League in St. Joachim's parish, Vernon River, P.E.I. Visitation will be at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, March 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated with Fr. Reginald Currie and Fr. Leo Boone at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, 598 Main St., Glace Bay, at 10 a.m. Monday, March 14. Interment to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne's Parish Cemetery Fund. ********************************* Mary Gero Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 09/03/2011 Mary Alice Gero , 93, a resident of Glace Bay passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Born in Lincolnville, Guysborough County, N.S., Alice was the daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Jane (Reddick) Borden. Alice was a member of St. Mary's Anglican parish, Glace Bay. She is survived by her brother, Arthur Borden, Lincolnville; two daughters, Alice Jordan, Dartmouth, Clara Jordan, Guysborough; son, Paul MacLean, who lived at home with her in Glace Bay. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; eight nieces, six nephews and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jethro Gero; sisters, Ida, Ada and sister-in-law, Laura Borden. Visitation for Mary Alice Gero will be held at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2011 with funeral service to follow on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Grand Lake Road, Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care department at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.pattenfuneral.com. ********************************* Paul Rogers Born In: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Westmount, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 09/03/2011 Paul passed away peacefully at the Cove Guest Home on Wednesday March 9, 2011. Paul was born in Yarmouth to the late Bud and Adelaide Rogers. He left Yarmouth to serve in the Second World War and was posted to Westmount where he met his future bride, Babs MacPherson. He was employed at Sydney Steel Corp., as a carpenter. He was active in golf, badminton, and skating throughout his lifetime. His main love was badminton that he shared with his family and friends until he was well into his seventies. He enjoyed many fishing and camping trips with his family and friends. Paul is survived by his daughter, Lynne, Saint John; son, John (Janice), Lunenburg; daughter-in-law, Claire, Blackett's Lake; grandchildren, Natalie and Craig, Stephanie and Adrian, Jill, Paul and Deanna and five great-grandchildren, Addison, Kyle, Nalin, Rowan and Iris. Paul was predeceased by his wife, Babs; brothers, Carl and Chester; a sister, Iris and a son, Dell. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, March 11, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel, Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca ************************************ Marie (Strickland) Watts Passed Away In: Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Passed Away On: 28/02/2011 Marie Francis Watts, formerly of North Sydney, died on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at West Toronto Urgent Center. Marie was the daughter of the late Lillian (Stagg) and Jack Strickland. She is survived by daughter, Sandra; grandchildren, Brock and Sarah Watts of Mississauga. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Mary Ann and Della Watts of Wassauga Beach; loving sister, Pauline (George) Dicks, North Sydney and stepsister, Bess Atkinson of Midland, Ont. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marie was a ballroom and line dance instructor in Mississauga. She was greatly admired by her students and will be sadly missed. Marie was predeceased by husband, Colin Watts and a brother, Brent Strickland. Funeral services were held on March 5, 2011 in Mississauga. A special thanks to Pearl MacLean of Markham, Ont. who extended her hospitality and provided much needed support in such a trying time. We will be forever grateful. "May you dance among the angels." ********************************** Lillian Magdellen Budden 92, Glace Bay It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of a beautiful mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, greatgreat-grandmother and friend, Lillian Budden of Glace Bay. Lillian passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Reserve Mines, July 4, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Aeneas and Mary Louise (Almon) Johnson, and was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Lillian was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Lillian enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and was well known for her sweets, especially her pies and squares. She had a great sense of humour and will be remembered for her quick wit, she loved the country and the outdoors. She also enjoyed cutting wood, ice fishing and she had a sincere love for all animals whether it was a stray pet in the neighbourhood or an injured animal she happened upon in the woods. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Mildred Shepard, Glace Bay, Louise (Ronnie) Wadden, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Robert (Brenda) Shepard, Glace Bay, who she resided with for the last nine years, Roger (Claire) Shepard, New Brunswick, Raymond Shepard, Glace Bay, Leonard Shepard, Antigonish, Michelle McDonnell, Michael McDonnell, Rhonda Wadden, all of Dartmouth; great grandchildren, Angela, Nicole, Allana, Darryl, Mary, Krystal, Max, Shannon, Kelsey; great great granddaughter, Aleigha; nephews, Dougie and Art (who were very special to Lillian), Jerry, Francis; nieces, Anne, Martha, Pearl, Nita and Lorraine. Besides her parents, Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Leonard (1955), sister, Louise Currie, brothers, Aeneas Johnson and Cyril Johnson. In honouring Lillian's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 12 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Judi Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay at a later date.
