Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Kathleen (Anderson) Grant. Billy was a proud veteran of the Second World War and while in Belgium, met and married the love of his life, Germaine. Dad had a warm and friendly smile and made friends wherever he went. He liked to greet people with a Christian hug. For most of his career, he worked at David's Market and retired from Tops grocery store. Billy was an elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a member of the men's choir. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Golden K and a longtime camper at Ben Eoin Beach. Surviving are his son, Gary (Joan); son-in-law, Frank (Nancy); granddaughter, Debbie Sneddon (Andrew); grandsons, David Masters (Debbie), Bill Masters, Richard Grant (Tanya) and Sheldon Grant; great-grandson, DJ Masters. Billy was predeceased by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Germaine and daughter, Louise (Grant) Masters. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Wednesday 11 a.m., with Rev. Born and raised in Sydney, Jim was the son of the late James and Lavina Pottle. He was a member of Church of Christ the King, Sydney. Jim will be sadly missed by his son, Thomas (Lee), Sydney; daughter, Wanda (Harry), Halifax; granddaughters, Sarah (Dan), Toronto and Emilie (Michael), London, England. He is also survived by his brother, Donald (Carmen), Sydney. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife, Wanda 'Cookie' (Doolan); brother, Bill; sisters, Alma, Georgina, Stella and Ada. He enjoyed his career at NSPC, but decided to retire early to provide loving long-term care to his wife, 'Cookie'. Jim's pride and joy were his grandchildren. At his request, there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Laura McCue officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. ********************************* CLARENCE W MCLEAN Born in: Dominion, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 19/12/1937 Passed away in: Delta, British Columbia, Canada Passed away on: 03/03/2011 With great sorrow we announce that Clarence passed away in Delta, B.C. on March 3, 2011, after a lengthy illness, with his family at his side. He was predeceased by his father, Wilson, mother, Gertrude and his brother, Ralph. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Marlene; children, Donna, Stephen, Peggy (Chris) and his beloved grandchildren Charlie, Abby and Lilah. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy (Teddy) Kazimer, Dominion; brother, Bob (Jo), Greenwood, N.S.; and many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. Clarence was known at various times in different stages of his life as Jip, Shakey and Mac. Born Dec. 19, 1937, in Dominion, Jip, as he was known then, grew up in a small coal mining town and became a miner for a short period of his life. He then joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served his country for 30 years sailing around the world before he retired as a chief petty officer. During his Navy years he was known to everyone as Shakey. He then worked for the British Columbia Liquor Board and was known to all as Mac. When he finally retired he spent many years around the Fraser River talking to everyone he met and enjoying his retirement years. He most especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren; they always knew he could be counted on for candy, ice cream and a bottle of pop, not to mention a toonie now and then. Clarence was forever a 'Cape Bretoner' and never forgot his roots and the people he knew when he was growing up. His was a life well lived and he will be greatly missed by many people from various walks of life. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine (Deveaux) Driscoll. She was a member of St. Joseph's parish, Sydney, Branch 12, Royal Canadian Legion and the mixed dart league. She was a devoted Catholic and when unable to attend church, she watched Mass For Shut-Ins. Catherine is survived by six daughters, Mary MacDonald, Joan (Stephen) MacLean, Marlene Dawson (Barry), Gloria (Percy) Cantwell, all of Sydney; Debbie (David) Connors, New Waterford; Elaine (George) LeBlanc, Quispamsis, N.B.; two sons, Ken, Dieppe, N.B.; Dennis (Bonnie), Kitchener, Ont.; four sisters, Joyce (Ken) Wolstenholme, Theresa McSavaney, both of Kitchener, Ont.; Sophie Peters, Inverhuron, Ont.; Tillie Mercer, Glace Bay; brother, Michael (Pat) Driscoll, Kitchener, Ont.; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Born in Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late John 'Jack' and Elizabeth (MacDonald) Leaver. She was a graduate of Sydney Academy, and she spent many years in accounting and office management positions with various local companies. She loved to cook and knit, and had fun learning to play the organ in retirement. Bette was happiest when family and friends came together. She enjoyed spending time in Benacadie and was often found at the dances in the country. Bette is survived by her son, Clarence Clarke, Sydney; her daughters, Charlotte (Buddy) MacDonald, Halifax, Shirley (Wayne) Campbell, Sydney, Kimberly Clarke (Wayne Phillips), Dartmouth, Tammy (Kyle) Parker, Oromocto, N.B.; her 10 grandchildren, Jason, Jeffrey, Blair, Terri, Jonathan, Matthew, Todd, Craig, Chelsea, Kaleigh; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Online condolences may be sent to our web page at www.chantfuneralhome.com ************************************ Calixte 'Cal' Deveaux Born in: Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/03/2011 Calixte Deveaux, 94, of LeDrew Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Hubert and Julie (Boudreau) Deveaux. Calixte was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel Church. He was a carpenter by trade, working several years with J.W. Stephens and J.A. Borden construction companies. Calixte was one of the longest surviving members of the Carpenters Union, Local 1588, having served over 70 years. Even after retirement, he loved going down in his basement where his carpentry shop was located, always busy and working on little projects, some of which included making fiddles. Calixte enjoyed hunting and fishing, but mostly going snowmobiling with his grandson Stephen, who was like a son to him. He had a great sense of humour and never lost touch with his French heritage, which he always admired. Calixte served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He is survived by his three daughters, Darlene (Graham), New Waterford, Diane (Steve) O'Brien, Kentucky, Marion (John), Falmouth, N.S.; and one sister, Sr. Rita Deveaux, Filles de Jesus, Trois-Rivieres, Que. Calixte is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephen Deveaux (Lisa), Westminster, Maryland, Ken (Andrea), Cindy (Paul) O'Brien, Kelly (Todd) Easton, all in Kentucky, Brittany, Falmouth, N.S.; six great-grandchildren, Taylor Deveaux, Westminster, Md., Patricia O'Brien, Garrett O'Brien, Dalton O'Brien, Shelby and Tinley Easton, all in Kentucky. He will be sadly missed by his brother-in-law, John Angus McEachern; sister-in-law, Bridget LeBlanc; and several nieces and nephews. Calixte was predeceased by his wife, Nora (McEachern) Deveaux in July 2000, three brothers, Willie, Francis, Joseph, two sisters, Mary Aucoin and Elvina Bourgeois. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard's Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery at a later date. All are invited to join the family for a reception at the KOC hall, Plummer Avenue. Veterans are invited to form an honour guard in memory of their departed comrade at the church. Pipper is survived by brothers, Kenny, Ronny, Gordie, Martin (Dimzey); and sister, Mitzi. He was predeceased by his mother, Jean (Arsenault). Born Jan. 19, 1918, in Reserve Mines, Emma was a daughter of the late Frederick and Christine (MacKenzie) Ward and wife of the late John Summerell Sr. Emma was honoured with life memberships in branch 78 Royal Canadian Legion, Immaculate Conception CWL and the senior choir. She was also active in the Ladies Bowling League, loved gardening and baking, and enjoyed her TV favourites. Emma is survived by her children, Verna (Charles) Attwood, John (Debbie) Summerell, Elizabeth (John Allison) Hynes, Kathy (Dale) Burke and Margie Summerell; daughter-in-law, Catherine; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lilly and Marie; and dear friend, Bernett Currie. She was predeceased by son, Lawrence, two infant children, five brothers and two sisters, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born Oct. 7, 1940, in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of Russell and the late Sally (MacNeil) Gouthro. Audrey graduated from St. Anne's High School, Glace Bay, and Mount St. Bernard College, Antigonish. She worked in Halifax and Northern Quebec; returning to Glace Bay to work at Atomic energy Canada Limited until its closing; transferring to AECL Ontario and retiring in 1995. Audrey loved to travel and did so extensively. Audrey is survived by her father, Russell; sisters, Betty (Crawford) Tracey and Claire (Laird) Wilton; brother, Hector (Bina) Gouthro, Dominion; and their families. Besides her mother, Audrey was predeceased by her brother, Jack and his wife Anne. Following Audrey's wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Curry's Funeral Home. Born in Oakland, Calif., he was the son of the late Albert and Martha (Backofen) Getz. Ken served for a time with the United States Naval Reserve Corps. While living in the US he worked at Owens Illinois Glass Co. and then moved to Canada in 1972 where he was employed with AECL Canada until his retirement. Ken is survived by daughters, Yvonne (Jon) Delahunt, Burlington, Ont., Alicia (Eric Gilbert), Halifax; sons, Stephen (Marie), Glace Bay, David (Martina), Coquitlam, B.C. and their mother, Virginia (Blois). Born in Big Intervale, she was the daughter of the late James and Mildred (Ethridge) Marple. She was a member of Big Intervale United Church, Big Intervale, UCW. She worked hard bringing up five children by herself. When the children went away to school, she worked outside the home for many years. Her favourite past time was knitting. She enjoyed baking and making preserves, which she did for many years. She loved flowers and plants. She had a great love for the Big Intervale and was able to maintain her independence there. She was a generous person, always willing to help if needed. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by sons, Allan (Eva), Earl (Jean); daughters, Mary Gillard (Sib), Sally Smith, Ellen Macdonald (Jess); brothers, Howard (Florence), Earl (Margaret); sisters, Jessie Tufts, Rita Wrywas; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
