Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Maude (Hinks) Lewis. Hazel had been employed with Woolco Department Stores, working in the Sydney River location for 25 years, where she often spoke of having many great times and making life long friends. In later years, she would embrace her new role as grandmother. Her joy of laughter, and being a kid at heart, enabled her to thoroughly enjoy caring for her grandchildren during their younger years. She would also become "Nanny" to Zach and Kyle Verschuren, whom she cared for as well. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and had been active as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Hazel enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, laughter, and the love of family and friends which she was able to maintain to the end in spite of her trials with Alzheimer disease. She is survived by her children, Ron (Ellen), of Ft. McMurray, Shirley (Dan) Campbell, of Sydney Mines, Dan (Marianne), of Georges River; her six grandchildren, Brent (Jenna) MacSween, Craig (Katie) MacSween, Daniel and Lisa McRae, Mark Campbell and Jill MacSween; her two great-grandchildren, Ewan and Callum; her five sisters, Floss Ashford, Northside Guest Home, Bernice (Charlie) Sampson, North Sydney, Joyce (Bob) Standing, Truro, Sadie (Ray) Joyes and Shirley Murray, both of Woodstock, Ont.; her brothers, Hector (Eileen) Lewis, Sydney Mines, George (Sue) Lewis and Dan Lewis, both of North Sydney; by numerous nieces and nephews; as well as her extended family, the residents and staff of Fisherman's Cove, Kimberly Hall, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Henry 'Buster' MacSween; sisters, Mary and Margaret; brothers, Jim, Bill and Stan. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Vivian (Wilson) Melanson. Mildred was employed for several years at the Sears Store in Glace Bay. She loved going to the casino and playing bingo. Mildred had a great sense of humour and was always compassionate and caring with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Ian Wilson; son, Larry MacKenzie, Truro; stepson, Owen (Adele) MacKenzie, Glace Bay; brother, Earl Melanson, Milton, Ont.; and aunt, Irma (Coady) Marsh, Glace Bay. Mildred is also survived by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and two special nieces, Ashley and Michelle Parsons. She was predeceased by her first husband, Fred MacKenzie and daughter-in-law, Ann MacKenzie. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. Hay, 74, of Athlone Street, Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (MacKenzie) Murphy. Jean graduated from the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in the General and Community Hospital, Glace Bay. Jean was a member of TOPS and loved going for walks and skating at the Bayplex. She took pride in her garden and also enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Mira. Jean was a very compassionate lady. She is survived by her husband, Tom Hay; daughter, Karen, Sydney; sons, Bill, at home, Tom Jr. (Michelle), Glace Bay; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Phillip and Olivia Jean. Jean was predeceased by her parents. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Elizabeth was born in Glace Bay, May 15, 1917, daughter of Wilburforce and Mary (Anderson) MacLeod. She graduated from Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Elizabeth then moved to New York to pursue a career in nursing and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Army. During the Second World War she was present at the Staten Island Barracks where the life-saving antibiotic penicillin was first introduced. She also spent part of the war overseas in England. She later re-enlisted and served in the Korean War. She later attended the University of Colorado where she earned a masters degree in psychiatric nursing which she would teach at the same institution. Elizabeth married Norman Lynk of Glace Bay and returned home to Cape Breton in 1970. They lived in Glace Bay and enjoyed many summers at Round Island. Norman predeceased Elizabeth in 1983. Elizabeth was active with the Friends of the Savoy, Community Friends, Glace Bay General Hospital Alumni and the Ostomy Society. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage. Elizabeth will be missed by her niece/step-daughter, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Lynk, New Waterford. She is also survived by nephews, Wilbur (Judy) MacLeod, Donnie MacLeod and David (Beth) MacLeod; niece, Michelle MacLeod and her grandnieces and grandnephews. She will also be missed by the Billard, Milburn, Jala and MacDonald families who always considered Elizabeth to be family. The family would like to thank all the devoted caregivers who tended to Elizabeth over the years. Besides her husband, Elizabeth was predeceased by siblings, Cameron, Arthur, Donald, Ada and Jessie. She was 58. Born in Sydney Mines on May 12, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Tommy and Roseann (McBride) Hall. Patrice was employed at both the Harbour View and Northside General Hospitals for 38 years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines. Patrice is survived by her husband, Andy MacKeigan; seven sisters, Bernadette (Tubby) Schofield, Sydney Mines, Catherine (John) McArthur, Prince Edward Island, Theresa Ann (David) Stewart, Morinvill, Alta., Clare (René) Fraser, Sydney Mines, Rizzie (Rose) (Corie) Stewart, Sydney Mines, Maureen Hall (Joe), Sydney Mines, and Edna (Wayne) MacDonald, Sydney Mines.
