Craig Young Gerard Pettipas Isabel Garland ******************************************************************************************************* Francis Pertus Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Born On: 24/08/1913 Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 21/03/2011 We regret to announce the passing of Francis Claude Pertus at the St. Anne Community and Nursing Care Centre, Arichat on March 21, 2011, at the age of 97. A former resident of Sydney River, Francis was born in Poulamon on Aug. 24, 1913, son of the late Louis and Alexina (Hebert) Pertus. Until moving to Arichat, he was a member of Our Lady of Fatima parish, Sydney River. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the RCAF. Following the war, he was employed at the Naval Base, at Eastern Bakeries Ltd., Eddie MacDonald Motors, Sampson Motors, and until his retirement was a commissionaire at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Point Edward. Francis was predeceased by his wife, Clo (LeBlanc) in 1989. The last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by brothers, Albert (1989), Remi (1945), sisters, Anita Poirier (1986), Marcellina MacDonald (1984) and Evelyn Boudreau (1998). He is survived by several nephews and nieces. At Francis' request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and memorial mass will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, at a later date and time to be announced. Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Online condolences can be sent to the family by visiting TWCurry.com. ********************************* Harold 'Tobacco' Tonary Born In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 22/03/2011 It is with sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Harold Tonary, 73, on March 22, 2011, at New Waterford Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Gerald and Effie (Petrie) Tonary. Harold was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford. In earlier years, he was employed with Devco. Harold had a great passion for boxing and at one time was an established amateur boxer who fought at various venues throughout Nova Scotia. For the past six years, Harold had been a resident at the long-term care facility in New Waterford Heights where they cared for him with great compassion and professionalism. The staff was like family to him and he, along with his immediate family, will be forever grateful. Surviving are daughters, Mary Jean (Norman) Bodhaine, Glace Bay, Shirley (Joe) Medeiros, Ontario; stepdaughter, Michelle Tonary (Jason), New Waterford; son, Harold (Cheryl), Ontario; and their mother, Hazel Tonary, Glace Bay; brother, Fr. Tom MacNeil, St. Ninians, Antigonish; nieces (Gerald's daughters), Kathleen, Geraldine, Shannon and Lonita; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gerald and sister-in-law, Leona Tonary. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 24 from 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Harold will take place Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Tom MacNeil officiating and Fr. Ray Huntley concelebrating. Cremation will follow with burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. Born in North Sydney, Mabel was the daughter of the late George and Beatrice (Price) Hicks. Mabel was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and also a member of the Altar Guild and involved with the Married Couples group, and in earlier years was a J.A. Leader within the parish. She was also a volunteer at the Northside Community Guest Home. Mabel enjoyed life very much and especially loved music, dancing and playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends.. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Gouthro, North Sydney; her son, Lew (Madonna) Jackson, North Sydney and her daughter, Peggy (Levi) Barnes, Prince Edward Island; her four grandchildren, Barbara, Michael, Elaine, Kyle and three great-grandchildren, Mikhail, Natalya and Liam; also surviving are stepchildren, Yolanda Ferguson, Andrew Gouthro and Clarence Martin; her sister, Mary Bungay, Kingston, N.S.; brother-in-law, Hector Whitty, North Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Lewis Jackson and her sister, Eva Whitty and her brother, George and brother-in-law, Gerald Bungay. Visitation for Mabel will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Gloria McClure Fraser, Rev. Carl Fraser and Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Born in Sydney Mines on Sept. 23, 1923, he was the son of the late Fred and Marjorie (Strickland) Ford. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Louella; children, David (Esther), Wayne (Sally), Sherry, Gail (Craig); stepchildren, Georgia (Al), Patricia (Glen), George (Wendy) and Troy; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter is also survived by brothers, Henry (Shirley) and Jimmy (Heather); sisters, Edith (late Manny Tobin) and Nora (Cecil). Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret (Rideout) Ford; an infant daughter, Beverly; twin brother, John, brother George; sisters, Agnes and Edna and stepsister, Ruby. At Walter's request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. Craig Young Passed Away In: Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 20/03/2011 It is with deepest sadness the family of Constable Craig Leonard Young announce his sudden passing on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Craig was a very proud member of the Halifax Regional Police force for eight years. During this time Craig took the opportunity to be a coach officer to several cadets and also became a drug recognition expert. Before joining the police force, Craig was awarded a full scholarship into the M.E.T.T.P program at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ont. with the Canadian Naval Division. Craig worked with the military as an instrumentation control technologist for seven years. Craig also attended Acadia University studying engineering. He also graduated from Memorial High School. Craig was a member of the Institute of Technologists and Technicians of Nova Scotia. Craig loved building houses, camping, music, spending time with friends and family, and being a dedicated hockey coach for the Tasa Novice Rockets. Craig was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Wadden) and his son, Ethan - the absolute light of his life. He is also survived by his mother, Pauline Carey, Sydney Mines and sisters, twin, Cynthia (Ron) McKenzie, Upper Tantallon, Angela (Brad) Murphy, Hammonds Plains and his nephew, Aedan McKenzie. Craig is also survived by his in-laws, Herman and Roberta Wadden, Main-a-Dieu. Craig was predeceased by his father, Frank; his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Catherine Carey and his paternal grandparents, Archibald and Magdeline Young. Visitation will be at J.A. Pettipas of Riverview passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the Moncton Hospital, following a long and courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 77. Born in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of the late Hubert and Phyllis (Peters) Pettipas. He was employed for 34 years with Canfor (CanWel) Ltd., followed by five years with Robert Bury Ltd. until his retirement in 1994. Gerard enjoyed woodworking and playing pool with his friends. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish of Riverview and a third degree member of Chapter 9270 of Knights of Columbus Gerard is survived by daughters, Phyllis Pirt (Perry Hogan) of Turtle Creek, Claire of Baddeck, N.S.; sons, Paul (Julie White) of Charlottetown and Roger of Dartmouth, N.S. and three grandchildren, Dayna, Noelle and Emily; a brother, Arthur; sisters, Mena Yurchesyn, Anna Mae (Art) Stone, Ethel Gillis, Delores Gariepy, Yvonne MacKinnon (Robert), Alvina Berthier (Alex), Katherine Morrison (Wayne) and Elaine Roach (Emile). He was predeceased by his wife, Agnes 'Dollie' and a sister, Lorraine MacDonald as well as brothers-in-law, Al Gariepy, John Yurchesyn, Greg Gillis and sister-in-law, Helen Pettipas. Born in Sydney, Isabel was the daughter of the late William and Fanny (Rowe) Bonnell. Isabel's love, kindness and dedication for family and friends were the qualities that endeared her to us all. Her gentle nature brought joy to all who knew her. She always put her family first and enjoyed the visits of many friends and neighbours, with whom she loved to share a cup of tea. Isabel worked at the Dosco General Office in the early years, then stayed home to raise a family with her husband and love of her life, Don, who passed away on December 28, 2010. She is survived by her daughters, Jane (Gerald) Matheson, Sydney and Barbara (Jamie) McDonald, Sydney Forks; grandchildren, Donald (Paula) Matheson, Jeff (Tracey) McDonald and Matt McDonald, as well as great-grandchildren, Justin Matheson, Brooke and Paige McDonald, all of whom brought much joy to her life. Isabel was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by brothers, John and Gordon Bonnell and sisters, Enid Matheson and Florence Bonnell. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
