'Spook' Nearing ******************************************************************************************************* Lucy MacDonald Born in: Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 03/03/2011 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Lucy MacDonald, 98, of New Waterford on March 3, 2011, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in Cheticamp, she was a daughter of the late Firman and Cecile (Roach) Chiasson. Lucy was a dedicated member of St. Agnes parish, where she was involved with the choir and during summer months cooked at the St. Agnes camp in Sangaree. In later years, she became a member of Mount Carmel Church and was actively involved with the CWL. Lucy was also a member of the Ladies L'Assumption Society, Cercle Evangeline, New Waterford Pensioners' Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. She was an avid bowler who was active into her 80s. Known as a very social person, she loved to get out and play darts with her team and attend dances at the Pensioners' Club. An annual family tradition she held close to her heart was her birthday gatherings. Every year, including this one, her immediate and extended family would get together at a restaurant to celebrate her birthday. Surviving are son, Greg (Margaret) O'Connor, New Waterford; daughter, Lynda (Edward) Steiger, River Ryan; grandchildren, Bill, Sandra, Glenn, Jamael, Christopher and Keigan; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Ryan and Reese; several nieces and nephews. Lucy was predeceased by husbands, Wilmot O'Connor and Edward MacDonald, one son, Paul, two brothers, Paul and Evé, three sisters, Anna Ryan Martin, Effie MacKenzie and Evelyn Baldin. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Lucy will take place Monday, March 7 at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Plummer Avenue, New Waterford. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. (Gaul) Gillespie, 88, Truro, formerly of Cape Breton, passed away peacefully with family at her side in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, on March 1, 2011, after a short illness. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Theresa (Wilcox) Gaul. She was a warm loving person who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. Martha loved to travel and hear of the travels of her family and friends. She lived for her family and was proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Martha was always involved in the many communities in which she lived and would attend church faithfully. She will be sadly missed by her family, Frank (Ben), Vancouver; Terry (Pam), Lansdale, Pa.; Cathy (Jim) Smyth, Moncton; Shawn (Martha), Truro; grandchildren, Joseph, Brendan, Martha, Colin, Matthew, Sean and Michael; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Mia, Cole, Charlie, Makayla, Victor and Martha. Just 50 days from her desired goal, Matilda was greatly anticipating her big day of April 21st when she would have turned 100 years old which was to be spent celebrating with family and friends from near and far. Born in Black Rock, Victoria County on April 21, 1911, she was the daughter of the late David and Christina (MacAulay) Carmichael. She was a devoted and loving wife to David Ingraham for 60 years. With a strong commitment to family, she dedicated her life to raising a loyal and committed family, which is her legacy of five generations strong. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, embroidery, knitting and was an avid Scrabble player. She will be forever remembered for her calm and enduring presence. Her loved ones are in hopes that they inherit a small measure of her perseverance, her will and determination. The 10 o'clock coffee time will be greatly missed by all of her family members who were fortunate enough to partake. It wasn't unheard of, to have 20 plus in the kitchen for coffee, conversation and laughs on Sunday after church. Matilda was a graduate of Normal College in Truro, N.S., and taught in Frizzleton, Big Interval and Portree schools. She was a partner in business as well as marriage with the love of her life, David. She was bookkeeper of the family business D.W. Ingraham Sawmill along with raising a family in the age when a working mother was unheard of. Matilda also was a member of the Wilson United Church, UCW, Sunset Co-op and the N.E. Margaree Senior Citizens. Matilda was the backbone of a close-knit family being survived by seven children, Roland and Lloyd (Brenda) Ingraham, Verna (Ian 'Bud') Phillips, Marjorie Phillips (Don Fitzpatrick) and June (Albert) Jenkins, all of Margaree Centre, and Margaret (Gene) Atkins and Louise (Adrian) Atkins, West Virginia; 21 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Murdock (Margaret) Carmichael, Margaree Valley, and John Carmichael, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, David Ingraham, brother, Kenneth Carmichael and sisters, Lillian Ingraham and Marjorie Hart, grandchildren, Lisa and Renita Phillips and Edward (Ted) Ingraham, sons-in-law, Charlie Phillips and Ian Timmons and daughter-in-law, Marion Christina Ingraham. James passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay he was the son of the late James and Mary Margaret Nearing. In the past, James was employed with the Community Hospital in the kitchen for seven years. He was also an employee of Devco retiring after 37 years of service. James enjoyed his walks around Renwick Park. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. James will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Annie (White); daughters, Anna (Herb) Nash, Barbara (Terry) Ashford, Susan; son, Jimmie (Cathy McInnis); sister, Joan (David) Fowler, all of Glace Bay; six cherished grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, James was predeceased by sisters, Viola, Bridget, brothers, Charlie, Lawrence, Joe and six in infancy. In honoring James wishes, cremation will take place. The Nearing family will receive friends Monday, March 7 at noon until the time of funeral service at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
