Peter Hawkins Bruce Carmen Bond Ian Douglas MacKinnon June Peinsznski Hughie Campbell Durling Demont Dwayne Pond ******************************************************************************************************* Peter Hawkins Born in: Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 17/04/1929 Passed away in: Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 07/02/2011 We, the family of Peter Hawkins, are sorry to announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Monday, February 7, 2011, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Bras d'Or on April 17, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Laffin) Hawkins. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Bras d'Or. Peter worked for Nickerson's Fish Plant until his retirement, at age 65. He will be sadly missed by his six daughters; Lillian (Phil) Devoe, Debbie, Linda (Bruce) Luker, Judy, Heidy (Gary) Luker, and Wina (Nick) McDonald; and four sons; Mark (Trinh), Petie (Miriam), Timmy (Michelle), and Kelly (Jennifer); brothers Joe Hawkins and Rick Hawkins; and a sister Millie Kirrane; 31 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Peter was predeceased by his wives Elvena, Agnes and Betty; grandsons Blaine and Petie; and sisters Bessie Hawkins and Shirley Anthony. There will be no visitation. The funeral Mass celebrating Peter's life will take place on Friday, February 11, 2011, in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall, following the service. Donations in Peter's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, or a charity of one's choice. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Frances Muriel (Clark) Bond and the late John Wesley Bond. He was a self-employed carpenter. He was a former member of Warden United Church. Bruce is survived by his mother, Frances Muriel (Clark) Bond; beloved companion, Laura Larion, St. George, Ont.; stepson, Reggie Baker, Ontario; sisters, Lorraine (Wallace) McNutt, Truro, Beverly (William) Byard-Jackson, Truro, Lesley (Sheldon) Shaw, Glace Bay, April (Robert) Gouthro, Glace Bay, Cheryl (John) O'Leary, Glace Bay; and brothers, Edward (Kathy) Glace Bay, and Dwight (Marilyn), Glace Bay. Bruce is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by the love he showered upon each and every one of them and who will never forget the joy of knowing Uncle Bruce. He was predeceased by his father, John Wesley Bond and sister, Cynthia Joyce in infancy. Visitation for Bruce will be held Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Online condolences may be left for the family at; www.pattenfuneral.com. *********************************** Ian Douglas MacKinnon Born in: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Passed away in: Balls Creek, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/02/2011 It is with broken hearts that we held Dad for the last time on Sunday Feb. 6, 2011, at the QE II Health Sciences Center in Halifax. Ian Douglas MacKinnon, beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend and resident of Balls Creek, passed away peacefully after a quick but devastating illness surrounded by his family. We take comfort in knowing that Dad is now with his beloved Mae, and now catching up on the last three years. Born in Moncton, Ian was the son of the late Jack and Nellie (Black) MacKinnon. He was a hard worker all his life, running his own saw mill while holding down a full-time job at the Sydney Steel Plant. Ian was a devout and faithfilled member of St. Mary's Church in Frenchvale. In earlier years he was involved in boxing, winning a Golden Glove Award, he was a champion swimmer and excellent skater. He managed to live life to the fullest by filling in his spare time playing in tarabish tournaments, and being 'the best' at crib, singing with the Memory Lane Singers, telling jokes and spending summers in Iona at MacKinnons Harbour. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews telling them stories of his boxing days, reciting poetry by Robert Frost and listening to their stories. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Ian was a friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (George) Fortune, Balls Creek; three sons, Doug (Rose) MacKinnon, Ricky MacKinnon, both of Balls Creek, Michael (Mary) MacKinnon, Fredericton; his 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his companion Lorraine Young. He was predeceased by his wife, Mae (Slade) MacKinnon, his sisters, Marion Lumsden, Gertrude 'Micky' Gamble and Vera Ratchford, and step-brother Paul Schaller. Visitation for Ian will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale, with Rev. Paul Abbass offictiating. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Frenchvale. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com ************************************ June Peinsznski Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 08/02/2011 June Peinsznski, 82, of 99 Mira Lea Dr., Dutch Brook, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Garfield and Mae (Bourgeois) MacLellan. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel parish. She was very active with Brookshaven Recreation Centre and loved her game of darts at Brookshaven. Being at home with her family or tending her garden were her most special things. June is survived by her two sons, John Joseph 'Joey' (Nancy), Sydney, Paul R. 'Jr.' (Heather), Sydney; five grandchildren, Marc (Jody), Christopher (Sheri), Jolene, Paul (Alicia), Colleen (James); two sisters, Helen (John) Fleming, Ontario, Mrs. Jean Peinsznski, Sydney; a sister-in-law, Muriel MacLellan, Ontario; by numerous nieces and nephews and her special companion, P.J. the dog. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Michael in 1975 and six sisters, Mary Power, Marg Power, Garnet MacLean, Phyllis St. George, Thelma MacNevan, Jean in infancy and a brother, John. Online condolences to www.twcurry.com. *********************************** Hughie Campbell Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 17/02/1928 Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/02/2011 Hugh Alexander Campbell of 106 Grove St., Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sunday, February 6, 2011. Born in Sydney on February 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Duncan Joseph and Catherine (Mac Eachern) Campbell. 'Big Hughie's' athletic career began in the 1940's while a student at St. Mary's in Halifax. His hockey talents had taken him to many places throughout the Maritimes, eventually leading him to the United States where he turned pro in the American League. He lived many years in the Philadelphia area where he married, and raised two children. Returning to Sydney when he retired, Hugh was inducted into the Cape Breton Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. Hugh is survived by his daughter Stacy (David) Lemon of Connecticut and his three precious granddaughters Christine (Jani), Connecticut; Sheri (Todd), Virginia and Julie at home. Hugh is also survived by his sisters, Mrs. Rita Dubois, Sydney; Mrs. Kay Devlin, New Jersey, a brother Joseph in Cornwall, Ontario and a niece and several nephews. Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Patricia and son Hugh Jr. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Campbell. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 11 at 11 a.m., 2011 at St. Joseph Church with Revs. Conrad Edwards and Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment at a later date. Durling worked for 35 years as a carpenter for the Department of National Defence. Durling is survived by his daughter, Dianne Donavon; Grandchildren, Kevin and Carla, Floyd, Dianna, Debbie; Great Grandchildren, Amy and Andrew, Stephen and Matthew, Craig and Stacey, Thomas, Kyle and Trevor. He was predeceased by his wife Mary and daughter Dolly. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Stairs Memorial Church, interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with a reception to follow in the church hall. ************************************ Dwayne Pond Born in: North Sydney Born on: 04/10/1971 Passed away in: Edmonton Passed away on: 05/02/2011 Dwayne James Charles Pond was granted his angel wings on February 5, 2011 at the young age of 39. Dwayne's life would seem too short to many but those who were touched by him, understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Dwayne was born to his adoring parents Roy and Linda (Clark) Pond on October 4, 1971 in North Sydney, N.S. He graduated from memorial High School in Sydney Mines in 1990. he later moved to Edmonton, Alberta where he spent his days as a loving and devoted companion and father. Left to cherish his wonderful memory are his parents, the love of his life, Brenda MacInnis and their two boys, Kyle and Zachary, who were his pride and joy. His two caring sisters, Sharon Cooke (Randy Townsend) and Angela (John) MacInnis will deeply miss their baby brother. Dwayne is further survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Dwayne was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Viv Clark, North Sydney and paternal grandparents, Harvey and Lilly Pond, Newfoundland and also by a brother in infancy. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
