(Sis MacNeil) Sheehan ******************************************************************************************************* Dennis Smith Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 18/07/1947 Passed away in: Skir Dhu, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 16/02/2011 After a courageous three-year battle with cancer, Dennis Smith, 63, of Skir Dhu, Victoria County, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Born in Sydney on July 18, 1947, he was the oldest of four children born to the late Alexander and Evelyn (MacDermid) Smith and was the cherished husband and friend of Nancy (MacInnes) for 44 years. Dennis will forever be remembered by his beloved children, Lorraine (Abraham) Bona, Melanie Smith, Lynette (Jerry) Emberly and Terence (Jolie) Smith; treasured grandchildren, Tristan and Tyler Bona, Josh, Kaitlyn and Sydney Emberly and Brandon, Riley and Samuel Smith. He leaves behind his brothers, Donald (Sonia) Smith and David (Mary Claire) Smith and sister, Mary (Roger) Hankey; along with nephews, Jason and Matthew; nieces, Charmaine, Christene, Rebecca, Emily and Katherine; grandnieces, Jessica and Ciara; and countless other friends and family, who were blessed to know him. Besides his parents, Dennis was predeceased by his grandson, Daniel Wayne Bona. Dennis was trained and worked as a medical lab technician but his passion was fishing lobster. He loved to be on the water and was in awe of the natural beauty that surrounded him every day. He was committed to improving the fishing community at large by attending countless meetings at home and across the country as past president of Local 6 Maritime Fishermen's Union and past vice-president for Nova Scotia. He served on numerous committees related to his vocation. Dennis was an avid golfer. As a member and former president of the Cape Breton Highland Links golf course, he was proud to be involved in the golf course's restoration. He was fortunate enough to be able to play and watch his favourite pastime up until his passing. He served as an elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Throughout his illness, Dennis maintained his wonderful sense of humour and a positive outlook; he regarded each day he was given as a special gift. His strength and dignity were an inspiration to all. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and Victoria County Memorial Hospital, who gave such wonderful care to Dennis during his time of need. Friends and family are invited to attend the wake service on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, both to be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge, Rev. Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating. A reception will be held directly following the funeral service and all are welcome to join. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make a donation to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or a charity of one's choice. ********************************* Olga Kendall Born in: Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 17/02/2011 It is with the heaviest of hearts, that we the family, announce the passing of our darling mother, Olga Kendall, on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her daughter by her side. Born in Grand Falls, N.L., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Lavenia (Oliver) Day. Mom was a very devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loving and caring lady who loved life. Everyone who met her truly loved her and she will be greatly missed. Olga is survived by her sons, Jim (Grethe), Gordie, John, David (Anna), Gerald (Debbie); her daughter and best friend, Eileen (Stephen) Gillis; brothers, Jim and Alfie; sisters-in-law, Roxie and Maureen; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, son, Robert Wayne in infancy, sisters, Lillian and Tillie, brother, Bob. There will be no visitation by request. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.chantfuneralhome.com. ********************************* John Edward (Gouthro) Walker Passed away in: Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 15/02/2011 John Edward (Gouthro) Walker, 69, of Reserve Mines, Eddie as he was known to friends and family, passed away on Feb. 15, 2011, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Edward Michael Walker and Mary Elizabeth 'Dolly' (Gouthro). He is survived by his children, Wayde, Dartmouth, Scott (Gillian), Dartmouth, and Jodi (David) MacDougall, Calgary; grandchildren, Samantha, Alex, Katherine, Brandon, Jacob and Will; sisters, Arlene Wagner, Toronto, Anita (Ian) Mac kenzie, Port Hawkesbury; brothers, Willie (Betty) Dartmouth, Vince (Charlene), Coxheath; and several nieces and nephews. He was a strong union member and was president and vice-president of UMWA Mechanics Local 4522 for several years. He was a lifelong member and past president of the Reserve Mines Credit Union, past president of the Shamrock Club in Dominion and former boy scout leader. He was a quiet leader who enjoyed walking, reading and a good debate. He was predeceased by his parents and niece, Rene Walker. A memorial will be held at a later date. Special thanks to Lynn Gillis of the palliative care unit in Halifax. ********************************** Mary Campbell, RN Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 25/03/1946 Passed away in: Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 16/02/2011 Mary was born and raised in Sydney, N.S., and began her nursing career at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. She married David Stanley Campbell, the one true love of her life, in 1967 and continued to practise nursing at the Prince Edward Island Hospital and the DVA Hospital in Saint John, N.B. Her beloved sons, Tom and Colin were born in Saint John. The family moved to Ottawa in 1974 and Mary began her 36-year career at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, offering her expert skills, her warm welcoming smile and an unfailingly caring heart to the children and families of the Ottawa region as a registered nurse in the emergency department. Mary assumed the responsibilities of triage nurse for the last 10 years of her career and was recognized as a role model for staff and as a respected advocate for excellence in the delivery of paediatric emergency care. She passionately loved her work, her family and her friends and was dearly loved in return. Her characteristic smile and notorious "joie de vivre" are now a cherished memory. Mary is survived by David, her beloved husband of 43 years; her sons, Tom (Lisa) and Colin; her 95-year-old parents, Thomas Sampson and Bessie (Briand) Sampson; her sister, Ann MacLean and her brothers, Tom, Charles and Joseph. She is also survived by her very dear friends. Born on Sept. 24, 1940, in North Sydney, C.B., to the late James MacNeil and Margaret Gouthro (MacNeil). Sis was a waitress with Howard Johnson's of Darien for 30 years before her retirement. She is survived by her best friend and loving husband, Francis W. Sheehan of Stamford; her daughter, Carol Gerstenhaber (Lee); and her two sons, Harold (Mindy) and Francis. Also surviving are her brothers, Ronald MacNeil (Suzanne), Quebec, Jim MacNeil (Lynn) Long Island; sister, Darlene Gielen (Peter), Millville; Aunt Jenny Gordon (Charles), Sydney Mines. Also six grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Nicole, Harry, Joey and Dean; one great-grandchild, Cheyann. Besides her parents, Sis was predeceased by her brother, Paul MacNeil, a sister, Bernadette MacNeil, and an infant baby. A service will be held Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery, Darien, Conn.
