Born Jan. 16, 1932, in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Sadie (Burns) Avery. Alice loved going for walks and picking blueberries. She also enjoyed tending to her household plants. She will be missed and never forgotten by her daughters, Sandra (Ralph) Head, New Waterford, Linda McKay; sons, Melvin McKay (Susan), Billy (Valerie) McKay; one sister, Elaine Micholsky, all of Ontario; grandchildren, Danny and Stacy Head, Lisa Crummey, Daniel and Gina McKay, Tiffany, Nathan and Brittany McKay; two great-grandchildren; family and friends. Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by a sister, Dolly Blackwood, brothers, Garfield, Cecil and Tod Avery, first husband, Dan McKay and second husband, Angelo Markotjohn. There will be no visitation by her request. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service for family and friends will be held at All Saints Anglican Church at a later date. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ********************************* George Edgar Hiscock Born in: Codroy, Newfoundland, Canada Born on: 30/10/1918 Passed away in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 01/02/2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, brother and uncle, George Edgar Hiscock, age 92, a resident of Harbourview Hospital Veterans Wing since 2007 and formerly of Stanley Street on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on Oct. 30, 1918, in Codroy, Nfld., the son of the late John and Olive (Ellis) Hiscock. George moved to North Sydney with his parents when he was two years old. He worked with his father until he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940, serving in he Second World War as a leading stoker mechanic. George married in 1946 to Jean Cann and was married for 60 years until her death in January 2006. He was employed as an engineer with the Sydney pilot boats, retiring as launch master on the Hilander II pilot boat after 30 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and travelling and held a keen interest in gardening. He also enjoyed camping at Seal Island for many years. He spent many evenings at Indian Beach listening to local singers with his little dog Mindy. George was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 19 in North Sydney and the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. He is survived by his children, Georgina (John) Mombourquette, Halifax, Pamela Tabor (Arnold Noiles), Pugwash, and Daryl Hiscock, Dartmouth; his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Ernest (Becky), Fredericton, Jack (Edie), New Glasgow; five sisters, Kay Gale, Ottawa, Addie (Nat) Chataway, Kelowna, Joyce (Bob) Marquis, Ottawa, Etta (Bill) Muise, Smith Falls, Ont., Olive (James) MacDougall, Kennetcook, N.S.; and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife, Jean (Cann) Hiscock, one grandchild, Christopher Tabor, two brothers, Ronnie and Morris and a sister, Alma Quigley. Visitation for George will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Anna was born in Holland on July 15, 1927, and immigrated to Canada in 1952. She worked at both the Sydney City Hospital and St. Rita Hospital in Sydney. Anna is survived by her son, Leo (Cathy) Vanderwyst, Ingonish; daughters-in-law, Pat Vanderwyst, Sydney, and Susan Reid, British Columbia; her sister, Nellie, Holland; as well as many nieces and nephews. Oma was dearly loved by her six grandchildren, Suzanne, Rick, Crystal, Barbie, Nicky and Andrew; five great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Linda (A.G.) Sams, Mary Sue (Gladstone) MacKinnon and five step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Anthony Vanderwyst, her second husband, Alfred Jackson and her sons, Peter Vanderwyst and Frank Vanderwyst. A celebration of Anna's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the United Church in Ingonish, with Rev. Margie Wood officiating. Born in Antigonish, Joan was the daughter of the late John T. Johnson and Margaret (nee Paul) (Dr. Granny) of Eskasoni. Left to mourn is her son, David Robert Marshall of Potlotek and former husband, Lindsay Robert Marshall of Potlotek. (Allan) GooGoo. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur Julian, Ralph Julian and sister, Linda Moore. Also surviving are her godchildren, Arnold Paul, Lynn Margaret Johnson, Kateri Sappier, Pauline Marshall, Dylan Goo Goo. John Darrell Marshall, and numerous nieces and nephews. She worked as editor of the well respected now defunct MicMac News which was based in Membertou during 1970s and 1980s. Joan was also an executive assistant to the president of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians, she was also a vice president of Nova Scotia Native Women's Association. She had served as a member of the Strait Regional School Board Mi'kmaq Representative. Joan was also a travel agent in both Boston and in San Francisco. She was a consummate volunteer and was devoted to her Catholic faith culminating in visits to Rome, Lourdes and Medjugorje. Joan was an eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception and a member of MI'kmaq Grand Council Choir. Visitation will be held at her Godson John Darrell Marshall's home on 16 Chapel Island Rd. in Potlotek beginning today, Feb. 3, 2011, at 3 p.m., for immediate family and at 5 p.m. for the public. Mass of Christian Farewell will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head with Fr. Maridoss officiating. Born in Sydney Mines on Sept. 7, 1923, Isabell was the daughter of the late Roderick and Essie (Nicholson) MacLennan. Isabell was an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and was recognized by the many organizations for which she volunteered her time and talents. She will always be remembered for her outgoing personality, her great sense of humour, her love of singing, her compassion for others and her strong faith. Her family would like to thank the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home and the Northside General Hospital for the kindness and compassion given to mom over the past couple of years.
