Alexia Cameron Hugh Austin Eva (Marshall) MacFarlane Agnes "Aggie" MacNeil ******************************************************************************************************* Calvin Richard 'Kakie' Michalik Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 13/02/2011 Kakie Michalik, 63, of Borden Street, Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at his residence. Born in Glace Bay, Kakie was the son of the late Gus and Mary Ruth (Fricker) Michalik. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Kakie was a heavy equipment operator with the town of Glace Bay and CBRM for 44 years. He loved sports, especially hockey and baseball, and in his younger years was scouted by the NHL. Kakie loved animals and was also an avid card player, his choice being, Texas hold'em. But most importantly, he was a family man, a great provider and a caring husband, father and grandfather. Kakie is survived by his wife, Linda (Martin) Michalik; three daughters, Michelle, Denise (Gerry), Ashley (Kyle), all in Glace Bay; and one son, Joey, Sioux Lookout, Northern Ontario. Also surviving are Kakie's three brothers, Abbie (Gina), Ted (Carmella), Glace Bay, Gussie, Ontario; two sisters, Olga (Naish) Burke, Glace Bay, and Mary Ruth (Brian) LePine, Halifax. Kakie dearly loved his four grandchildren, Kendra, Hailey, Amanda and Chris. He will sadly be missed by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Shirley Rogers. Visitation will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home,16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee is Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with cremation to follow. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall, directly below the church. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Anthony's Cemetery with his parents. Alexia Cameron Born in: South Side Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 15/02/2011 Sister M. Alexia Cameron, 79, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Feb. 14, 2011, in the 56th year of her religious life. Born in South Side Harbour, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Agnes (MacDonald) Cameron. Sister Alexia entered the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1953, pronounced her fist vows on August 15, 1955, and made her perpetual commitment on August 15, 1958. She graduated in Laboratory Technology from St. Martha's Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and successfully passed the provincial examinations to obtain her Certificate of Registration the same year. As a registered Medical Laboratory Technologist she served at St. Martha's; then at St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, where, in 1960, she started the School of Medical Laboratory Technology. Moving to Lethbridge in 1965, Sister Alexia served at St. Michael's Hospital as coordinator of the lab training school and manager of the hospital lab. During her time at Lethbridge, Sister Alexia experienced and recovered from several bouts of serious illness. After 24 years of ministry in the West, she returned to Bethany for a five year term as an Apostolate Director for the Congregation. Following this appointment Sister Alexia was facilities manager at Bethany Center, and later served in a variety of ministries at the Motherhouse. She acted as community leader in various convents for thirteen years, East and West. Sister Alexia was from a family of eleven. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Florence and Theresa, and by her brothers Charles, Donald and Joseph. She is survived by sisters Genevieve and Bernardine, and her brothers John, Owen and Leo. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. www.MacIsaacs.ca. *********************************** Hugh Austin Born in: Skye Glen, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 25/06/1921 Passed away in: Skye Glen, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 13/02/2011 Hugh Fraser Austin, 89, Skye Glen, Inverness Co., passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, with his family by his side. Born in Skye Glen, Inverness Co., June 25, 1921, he was the son of the late James and Lavinia (Smith) Austin. Hugh was a veteran of the Second World War having served in Continental Europe with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders as a Lance - Corporal. He took part in the D-Day Operations on June 6, 1944 and in the battles surrounding Caen, France. He was later wounded at Falaise Gap, France. While recovering in hospital in Colchester, England, he met his future wife, Edna, who was enlisted in the Women's Land Army. After the war Hugh returned to Skye Glen with his British war bride and they worked the family farm and raised their children. Hugh enjoyed farming and in the earlier years he worked a mixed farm operation. Later on, the farm became a successful dairy farming business. Hugh was also known for his keen interest in vegetable and flower gardening and looked forward to each spring when he would pick out new plants and flowers to add to his gardens. He made many friends over the years and loved to host visitors in his home. During these visits, he would recite many interesting stories of his early life growing up in a family of 16 children. He also enjoyed discussions on politics, current events and history. Hugh was a very generous man and was very proud of his family and grandchildren. Besides working on the farm with his wife Edna and children, Hugh also found time to serve on many community committees and boards. He was past president and past secretary of Whycocomagh Branch 123 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was also a past Legion zone commander for Inverness County and branch service officer. He was awarded the Legion's life membership in 1978, and in 1985, was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf for outstanding service to the legion, which are the highest awards that can be conferred by the Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion Command. He was president of the Whycocomagh Co-operative, a past president of the Inverness Federation of Agriculture and a 4-H club leader. He served on the board of directors of the Inverness County Memorial Hospital and was also past president of the Whycocomagh Home and School Association. He served as president of the Skye Glen Community Hall Association and was a member of the Mabou Historical Society. In 1968, Hugh was awarded Canada's Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the nation. Hugh retired from farming in 1977 when his son John took over the farm; however, he continued to be active in community and Legion projects. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Edna Margaret (nee Champion); daughters, Diana (Linus McCloskey), Cornwall, P.E.I.; Janice, Toronto, Ont.; Patricia (Gerald Noade), Timberlea, N.S. and Ella Marie (Terrence Rankin), Fort McMurray, Alta.; sons, Kenneth, Skye Glen, John (Judy) Skye Glen, Lawrence (Petra) Trenton, Ont.; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Norman, Truro and Thomas, Sudbury, Ont.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by sons, Hedley and Paul; daughter-in-law, Linda; son-in-law Duncan Johnson; brothers, Smith, David, J.D., Earl, Clair and Henry; sisters, Ella, Florence, Lottie, Beatrice, Ida, Bessie and Isobel. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (MacInnis) Poirier. Eva enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving daughter, Connie Piercey; grandsons, Richie, Cyril, Ricky, Scott; granddaughter, Michelle and great-grandson, Rhett, along with many nieces and one nephew.
