Topics : Inverness County council , Strait Regional School Board.LeBlanc , Port Hastings , Inverness County , Judique MacDonald died Wednesday following a lengthy illness. He was a longtime fixture on Inverness County council, having been elected to nine terms, and served three terms as county warden. He represented District 6, which includes the Judique-Port Hastings area. "He was a heck of a nice man, honest, didn't mince his words, if he had something to say, he got it said, he didn't go behind your back to have someone else tell you," said Gloria LeBlanc, who served with MacDonald on council for about 12 years. MacDonald - to many in the county and beyond he was simply referred to as "Red" Eddie - worked hard for his constituents, LeBlanc said. "No matter how much of a problem it was for him to get something done, he worked hard at it until he got it accomplished," she said. "His community, the people he represented, were the people who were really, really important to him." That dedication was exhibited during his illness, LeBlanc said. "He had some major lung problems and never let that deter him from his job because he went around with his oxygen tank and made sure that he got to meetings whenever he could and that he did what he was supposed to be doing. He's a good example for the rest of us," she said. "They always say when someone dies you only remember the good things. Well, there were really no bad things to remember about Eddie ... I feel terrible this morning because we're going to miss Eddie terribly." As mayor of the neighbouring municipality of Port Hawkesbury, Billy Joe MacLean served on a number of boards and agencies with MacDonald over the years. "There was nobody more stubborn or bullheaded when it came to protecting the interest of the Port Hastings country area," MacLean said. "He loved the people that he represented, he loved the job of councillor and warden. He served his community well." When approached by people who needed assistance, MacDonald did what he could to help them, MacLean said. "He got involved in people's pensions, he got involved in other personal matters outside the realm of normal municipal politics. Your problem would become Eddie's problem," he said. MacDonald is not the only member of his family to put his name forward for public office. His wife, Mary Jess, is chair of the Strait Regional School Board. LeBlanc said Thursday her thoughts were with Mary Jess, noting the couple was practically inseparable. "They were very, very close, you saw one, you saw the other." MacDonald's funeral arrangements weren't immediately available Thursday. nking@cbpost.com ******************************************************************************************************* Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org
