MacNeil Carey Laureen MacNeil (Szalay) ******************************************************************************************************* James Reginald 'Jinx' Brooks Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 09/11/2010 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a very caring gentleman and friend James Reginald 'Jinx' Brooks, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at his home. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Roland and Rose Catherine (Pembroke) Brooks and was a member of St. Anne's parish, Glace Bay. Jinx was a member of the Laborers Union Local 1115 and worked in the construction industry his entire working career, spending the last 15 years prior to his retirement in 2003, as a grounds keeper at Lingan Golf and Country Club, a job he truly enjoyed. Jinx played sports all of his life, playing on several hockey and baseball teams in the Caledonia area of Glace Bay and in later years enjoyed watching it on TV with his boys. His favourite teams being the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Red Wings. He was also a past member of the Sergeants Mess, Glace Bay. Jinx will mainly be remembered as a very caring and gentle man, meek and mild and respected by many. He was the type of man who would do without, so he could provide for others. He will be sadly missed by his loving friend of 43 years, Jean Peori; her two sons, who Jinx considered as his own boys, Carl (Karen), Sydney, Billy (Kathy), Glace Bay, and their children Garrett, Dawson and Rileigh; twin sister, Betty Head, Glace Bay; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation for Jinx will be held Friday, Nov.12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, with a luncheon to following in the church foyer, all are welcome. (Bill) MacDonald of Charlottetown, age 83 years. Beloved husband of Shirley (nee Annear). Dear father of Sharon, Melanie (Steve) Roth, Gordon (Sandra Tierney) and Nancy (John) Coppock. MacNeil Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 10/11/2010 With sorrowful hearts we announce the passing of Joan E. MacNeil, 84, a resident of Taigh Solas at the Northside General Hospital. Joan died peacefully, with dignity and in Grace, delighted to be called home, on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010. Born in Sydney Mines, Joan was the eldest of six siblings, the daughter of the late Malcolm J. and Mabel (Steed) MacNeil. Joan lived her younger years in Glace Bay but was a resident of North Sydney since 1953. For years, she walked daily to early morning Mass at St. Joseph Church. After her mobility declined, 10 years ago, she made her home at Taigh Solas. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Irwin, Scarborough, Ont.; her brother, Gerald (Jennie) MacNeil, North Carolina; sister, Carol Ann; and brother-in-law, Donnie Power, North Sydney, with whom she lived for 30 years; sister-in-law, Muriel MacNeil, Boston; also 26 nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her extended family, particularly Michael Cumming, and the residents and staff at Taigh Solas, including her TV buddy, Chippy Reid. Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, Adrian, her sister, Dorothy and husband James Forbes and brother-in-law, John Irwin. Joan lived a simple life dedicated to God and in service of others. She cared for her mother for many years and was a second mother to Elaine, Alan, Maureen, Gerry and Kathleen Power. She enjoyed life's pleasures, baking bread and cookies, picking berries, fishing trout, knitting, travelling and eating, especially Donnie's Sunday suppers. She shared generously and unconditionally. Her prayers touched countless lives. Her family is deeply grateful for the loving care provided by the staff at Taigh Solas. We will all miss her very much. Carey a young mother and devoted wife, was called to be with our heavenly father and loved ones who went before her at an early age. Although she is missed, she left with us many gifts. The enduring strength observed by all during her courageous battle has touched all of our lives by helping each of us to understand and appreciate what is truly important in life. Carey, who was born in Toronto, Ont., May 13, 1970, and raised in Groves Point, C.B., was predeceased by her mother, Margaret Szalay (Carey). Left to remember and protect Carey's memory is her husband, Wayne MacNeil; daughter, Maria MacNeil; stepsons, Scott MacNeil and Craig MacNeil; father, Joseph Szalay (Anne-Marie); sisters, Nicole (Michelle Perry), Marcy (Scott Corkum); and brother, Joseph Szalay.
