Allan John Gillis Sylvester Brown 'Ba' MacKay Claire Elaine (Gillis) Wall Charlotte May Hull Violet Mary Pottie Caroline (Keough) DeLeskie ******************************************************************************************************* Allan John Gillis Born in: Gillis Lake, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Northside East Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 20/11/2010 Allan Gillis, 96, of Northside East Bay, formerly of Gillis Lake, passed away Nov. 20, 2010, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Gillis Lake, he was a son of the late John and Mary (MacIssac) Gillis. He was a devoted member of St. Mary's parish, East Bay. Allan enjoyed playing cards and many other recreational activities at Harbourstone. Throughout his life Allan was a very physically active person. He worked at Canadian Liquid Air for many years. He was very dedicated to his family and took great pride in caring for his property. He is survived by daughters, Betty (Steve) MacNeil, East Bay, Pat (Vern) MacAdam, Lower Sackville, Alana, Dartmouth, Carmel (Archie), Halifax, Sheila (Eric), Favaro, Sydney River, Pauline, East Bay, Florence (Kevin) Riley, Antigonish, Joanne (Greg) Farrell, Halifax; sons, Ed (Jenny), Lower Sackville, Allan 'Al' (Donna), Bedford; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Liz; and many nieces and nephews. Allan was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Catherine 'Kay' (MacDonald), sisters, Mary Margaret, Kit, Mary and Jessie in infancy, brothers, Jim A., Rannie, Gussie, Johnny, Jimmy and Paul. The family would like to thank the staff of Fisherman's Cove at Harbourstone Enhanced Care for taking such great care of our father for the past six years. Visitation will be 2- 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22 in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 at St. Mary's Church, East Bay, Fr. Ba was born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Henry and Christine (MacEachern) MacKay. He worked as a miner in collieries 26, 18 and 12. Ba is survived by his wife of 43 years, Catherine; and his children, Sylvester Jr. (Tanya), Halifax, Albert (Elaine), Sydney River, Mary (Finky), St. Peters; twin brother, John, New Waterford; brother, Adrian, Moncton; sisters, Girlie Gillis, Victoria, Annie May, Toronto; along with three grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother, Danny and sisters, Florence and Vivian. Visitation will be held 3-7 p.m. in T.W. Online condolences may be made at TWCurry.com. ************************************** Claire Elaine (Gillis) Wall Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 19/11/2010 It is with the heaviest of hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Claire Elaine Wall, beloved wife, mother, nana, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother and friend. Claire passed quietly from our lives early Friday morning at the age of 62. Claire was the third of 13 children born to Eileen (Connolly) and the late Patrick 'Paddy' Gillis. Claire was united with her beloved husband Dennis July 4, 1970. They had just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Together they were blessed with three loving children of whom Claire was so proud, Janet, Sydney, Lisa (Jeno), Halifax, and Stephen (Dana), Victoria, B.C. Nana Claire leaves behind what she felt were her most precious gifts, her grandchildren, Emma Claire and Ryan Charles Drohan, whom she loved so dearly. They were her greatest joy and brought a smile to her face each and every day. Claire always told them "I love you more than tongue can tell". A woman of deep religious faith, Claire was an active member of St. Theresa's parish who was devoted to her church and to God. Claire was active in all aspects of parish life. She was a dedicated, lifetime member and past president of the Catholic Women's League. Claire was the CWL Regional Convenor for the Diocese of Antigonish and a member of parish council. She assisted in the organization of countless fundraisers for the parish. It was within the CWL of St. Theresa's parish and her friends within the parish that Mom felt much purpose, fulfillment and comfort. Claire's dedication to service was recognized when she was awarded the Honourable CWL Maple Leaf award for her outstanding work. Born and raised in Whitney Pier, Claire was proud of her roots. She graduated from Holy Angels High School and the Cape Breton Business College. Claire worked until her children were born and subsequently took the time to concentrate on raising, loving and nurturing her family who meant the world to her. After returning to work, Claire spent 25 years with Cooperators Insurance where she achieved her Associateship as a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), retiring in 2009. During that time, she so loved her career and her many co-workers in the insurance and legal communities who were like an extended family to her. Claire thoroughly enjoyed time with family and friends in her summer home on the North Side of East Bay. She was truly selfless and had a tremendous sense of compassion. Poet Kahlil Gibran wrote that "Work is love made visible", and Claire loved deeply. She was fully dedicated to her family and friends and reached out to them in times of happiness and need - Claire was always there for everyone. One could not enter her kitchen without finding her hard at work on her signature dessert, fresh pork pies, and a good cup of tea to be enjoyed and her memorable words "Good dear, good" . Claire was predeceased by her father, Paddy, and brother, Stephen. She is survived by Dave (Charlotte) Gillis, Sydney, June (Don) Cashen, Brackley Beach, PEI, Anne Marie (Francis) McCarthy, Sydney, Dorothy (late Charlie) MacDonald, Kitchener, Ont., Allan (Debbie) Gillis, Sydney River, Margie Gillis, Toronto, Ont., Joe (Patricia) Gillis, Sydney River, Barbara (Arthur 'Becky') MacDonald, Dartmouth, Peter (Rebecca) Gillis, Sydney, Blaise (Rose) Gillis, Sydney River, Paul (Kim) Gillis, Halifax; her father-in-law, Charlie Wall and Dennis's brothers and sisters and their families. Claire will be sadly missed by extended family Paul Sajatovich, Leone Gouthro, and her many loving nieces, nephews, and many friends. Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Monday, Nov. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Claire's uncle, Father Owen Connolly, and fellow clergy will preside over the celebration of Claire's life which will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Ashby Legion. Therese de Blainville Passed away in: Sydney Mines Passed away on: 19/11/2010 It is great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Charlotte Hull, which occurred Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Ste. Therese de Blainville, Que., she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Margaret Victoria (Willing) Morrison. Charlotte was a member of Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, Sydney Mines and was active in the A.B.W. Missionary Society for many years. In her earlier years, Charlotte and her husband Lloyd ran the Homestead Baptist Camp. She was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian army. Charlotte was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8, Sydney Mines. She is survived by her loving husband, Lloyd Hull; three daughters, Maureen Hull (David Harding), Grace (Rand) Hanney and Kathleen Hull; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hull; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Morrison and Shirley (Bill) MacPherson; four grandchildren, Amy Harding (David Vanderfeldt), Moira Harding (Steve Mooney), Christopher Hanney and Ryan Hanney. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Charlotte was predeceased by her son, David Hull, sisters, Margaret St. Denis, Agnes Clarkson, Kay Girard and Jean Morrison, brothers Jim and John Morrison. Visitation for the late Charlotte Hull will take place today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 in Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. David Hopper officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Morash) Pottie. Violet is survived by her sister, Elsie Forrester of Sydney, two sisters in Ontario, her brother in Margaree, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the staff and residents of Terrace Manor, Glace Bay. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Sadie Wilson. Violet spent the last 25 years living at the manor, she enjoyed being there with Blanche, the staff and all the friends she made over the years. The family will be ever grateful for the excellent care and love Violet has received from the home, she will be missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 23, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra Street, Sydney. Interment to follow in Our Lady of Fatima Church Cemetery.
