Born in Framboise, she was a daughter of the late John Allan 'Red' and Mary Ann (MacLeod) MacLeod. Surviving are her son, DJ (Nicole), Edmonton; sisters, Sadie MacIntyre, Margaret 'Peggy' Mason, Dolena Brown, Annie (Earl) MacPherson, Donelda (Earl) Drysdale, Mary (Lewis) Blackmore and Maurena (Ron) Seifried: brothers, Angus (Alice), William 'Billy' (Christine) and John James (Renee); and grandson, Peter. Christy was predeceased by her husband, John A. and sisters, Effie, Evelyn and Ruth. Born August 26, 1938 in Portree, N.S., Jeptha was the son of the late Jeptha and Iola (Shaw) Ross. Formerly from Portree, Margaree, Jeptha resided in Toronto, Ont. for some years and later in Sydney. N.S. For the last several years Jeptha resided at the Braemore Home, Sydney River. Jeptha loved Celtic music, especially the violin, as a younger man would step dance in the middle of the kitchen floor at home. He also enjoyed country music. Jeptha Thomas is survived by his sisters, Mabel Mullins, Inverness, Martha Ross, Sydney Mines and brother, Colin (Vivian) Ross, Portree Margaree; as well as a lot of nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Besides his parents, Jeptha was predeceased by his brothers, Irving, John, Carey, Murdock and Fred; and his sisters, Elizabeth, Delina, Margaret and Annie Belle. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of the late Jeptha Thomas Ross will be held at the Margaree Valley Baptist Church, Margaree Valley, N.S. on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1-2 p.m. with memorial service to follow with Pastor Hugh Morrison officiating. Reception will be shared after the service. Online condolences may be sent to www.pierfuneralhome.com. ************************************ Gernot Schinzig Born in: Freiburg, Germany Born on: 24/10/1910 Passed away in: Basel, Switzerland Passed away on: 11/11/2010 Gernot Willy, 'Oldy' Schinzig, Basel, Switzerland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 11, 2010 after living to the spectacular age of 100. He was born in Freiburg, Germany on October 24, 1910 to Willy and Gertrude Schinzig. He worked as a typesetter and typographer for the Baslerzeitung. He spent many late nights ensuring the news was accurate, retiring at age 75. He continued to read the paper daily until very recently. He reluctantly fought for his country in the Second World War. He was captured in Normandy, France in 1945. He embraced his American captors who transferred him to a POW camp in Scotland where he was well cared for until 1948. An avid outdoorsman, he made his home in Switzerland where he hoped to never face war again. He met and married Sonja Bachlin in 1955. They raised two sons together, creating many wonderful memories in the Swiss Alps, in Spain and in later years by the shores of the Bras d'Or Lakes, in Cape George, Cape Breton. He was greatly pleased to celebrate his one hundredth birthday two weeks ago. He was well enough to enjoy a glass of champagne and a piece of black forest cake. May we all live such a full life. He is survived by his sons, Martin (Natalie), Schinzig, Paris, and Michael (Mary-Anne) Schinzig, Sydney. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Annas, Hannah, Connor and Patrick. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Sonja Bachlin; his brother, Werner and sisters, Grimhild and Olga. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Schinzig. Born and raised in Plaster Rock, N.B. on the Tobique River, he was a son of the late James M. and Gertrude (Ward) Shannon. At seventeen he took part in the Normandy invasion, landing on Juno Beach with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and fought with the Canadian Army through France, Belgium and Holland. After returning home in 1947, he married Jocelyn Ryan. They started their family in Edmundston, New Brunswick. In 1961 when Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. opened in Port Hawkesbury, Belmont took the opportunity to build his life with his young family in Cape Breton. Belmont retired from Stora Forest Industries as a supervisor in 1987. Belmont was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for more than 60 years, in particular Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. He was a member and past president of the branch, and served on the RCL Nova Scotia Provincial Command. He was especially proud of the creation of Veteran's Memorial Park and the work he and fellow Legion members undertook to ensure a lasting legacy to veterans. Belmont held the words ". . . at the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them" close. Belmont enjoyed fishing hunting and camping. Whether in New Brunswick or out on River Denys dad loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping and making trips 'home' to Plaster Rock to visit with family. Dad enjoyed several return trips to Europe with mom, and later to celebrate the liberation of Holland. In 2008 he was able to enjoy a cruise with family in the Caribbean. Dad, Poppy, Poppa will be dearly missed. Belmont was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 2001. He is survived by his children; James (Carol) Shannon, Havre Boucher, Faye (Donald) Theriault, Dartmouth, Brian (Bernadette) Shannon, New Glasgow, Audrey Shannon, Port Hawkesbury. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; Donald Theriault, Michael Theriault, Tonya Campbell, Dereck Theriault, Christopher Shannon, James Shannon, Janet Rhyno, Meghan Shannon, Laura Shannon and Colin Shannon. Ten great-grandchildren; Connor, Reece, Matthew, Katie, Nathan, Kailyn, Jocelyn, Benjamin, Owen and Lauren; sister Jean (Lionel) Michaud, Plaster Rock. He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Fricker (Sheppard), sons, Kristen and Chris; daughter, Crystal (Eric); sisters, Shirley, Isabel (Terry), Catherine, Susan (David) and Rosemary (Willard); brothers, Benjamin (Julie), Andrew (Maxine), Michael (late Garry Tomiuk) and Arthur (Angie). Loved and adored by his three granddaughters, 16 nieces and nephews, and his faithful dog Molly, who was always by his side. Ted passed with his family by his side after a 14-year battle with cancer. Ted was a passionate man who enlightened everyone he spoke to and enjoyed life to the fullest. Ted was a loving husband, father and brother who made it shown to everyone how much he loved them. Ted was an excellent man with a warm heart who will be missed by all. He was predeceased by twin brothers, David and Joseph. Born in Whycocomagh, he was the son of the late Stephen and Mary Julia (Bernard) Stevens. He was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni and a long time member of the Grand Council. Andrew was involved for over 30 years with the St. Anne deBeauprĂ© Pilgrimage and served for almost 40 years as an usher as well as serving many years on church council. He was a Band Councilor for several years. He worked as a school bus driver for many years. Andrew was a person who set an example for all his community to aspire to. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, the former Dorothy Sylliboy; daughters Mary Noella (Floyd) Marshall, Donna Stevens, Martha V. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Joy) Fogarty. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1934 and made her religious profession in 1936. Sr. Nora was involved in the teaching profession from 1936 until 1979. She taught in Nova Scotia, Bermuda, and British Columbia during these years. In 1979, Sr. was involved in parish ministry until she retired in 1991. In 1996, she transferred to the Retirement Centre of Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse. She is survived by sisters, Mamie McNeil, Sydney, Margaret Currie, Toronto, many nieces and nephews, and many grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Genevieve, Agnes, and Etta, brothers, Patrick, Richard, and William. A mass of Christian burial took place on Monday, Nov. 8 in Immaculate Conception Chapel, Caritas Residence, Halifax.
