Genevieve was the foster daughter of the late John Alex and Elizabeth MacNeil of Ottawa Brook, N.S. She was employed for many years at Imperial Optical Co. in Toronto and on retirement she returned to Sydney, N.S. The past year and a half she resided at Alderwood Rest Home where she received excellent care. Genevieve was a faithful parishioner of St. Anthony Daniel parish in Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a foster brother Leo Bonaparte. She will be missed be nieces, nephews and cousins. In honouring Genevieve's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral will be held at St. Columba Parish Church, Iona, N.S. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Sandy MacNeil and Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial at the parish cemetery. Donations to Genevieve's memory may be made to St. Columba Parish Cemetery or a charity of choice. ************************************** Wiliam Irving Blunden Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/10/2010 It is with broken hearts that we, the family of William Blunden announce his sudden passing Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital at the age of 82. Born in Glace Bay, William was the youngest of four sons born to William and Lucy Blunden (nee Butts). William was the last surviving member of his immediate family. William was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (MacKay) Blunden in 1999. In his younger years, William worked with the bank and then began his career in the car selling business where he excelled immensely until his retirement in 1999. William is survived by his son, Greg (Tania), Bangor, Maine; and by his daughter, Kelly (Brad Smith), with whom he resided. He is also survived by grandchildren, Gregory, Michael, Ryan and Connor Binder and William and Katie Blunden. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews including his niece, Pammie who was like a daughter to him; and by his brother-in-law, Robert MacKay. Besides his parents and his wife, William was also predeceased by brothers, Gilbert, Robert and Kelso, their wives and by sister-in-law, Muriel MacKay. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 12-2 p.m. followed by a memorial service in the funeral home chapel. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.pattenfuneral.com. ************************************** Dianne Marie (Detienne) Campbell Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 15/03/1946 Passed away in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/10/2010 It is with heavy hearts we the family announce the passing of Dianne Marie Campbell, on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital she was surrounded by her family and fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dianne was born in New Waterford on March 15, 1946; she was the daughter of the late Damien and Elise (Wilcox) Detienne. She was a member of Calvin United Church. Dianne was a loving, loyal and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, always putting others before herself. She was an accomplished seamstress, a great cook and enjoyed playing darts. Dianne is survived by three sons, Bobby (Marlene), Billy (Karen) and Sheldon (Debbie); daughter, Denise; grandchildren, Alisha, Callie, Caitlyn, Brendan, Alex, Savannah; brothers, Jackie (Karen), Leo, Jimmy (Kay) Willie (Kim), sisters, Deloris (Lenny), Darlene (Charles); many nieces and nephews; special friends, Catherine McMullin, Murgie Campbell, father of her three sons, and Janet Hanrahan. She has a special place in her heart for animals especially her three cats. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Damien and her companion, Blair MacIsaac. Our heartfelt thanks to all her doctors, the VON and second floor staff of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital for their wonderful support and compassion. To express your condolences directly to the family please go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. ************************************** Hilda (Pafford) Gabriel-Lake Born in: North Harbour, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, Canada Born on: 11/07/1919 Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 31/10/2010 Hilda Mary (Pafford) Gabriel-Lake, 91, Sydney, passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2010, at the Cove Guest Home from end stage Alzheimer's disease. Hilda was born July 11, 1919, in North Harbour, Placentia Bay, N.L. Her parents were Josiah and Eliza (Reid) Pafford. One of 12 children, she is survived by her youngest brother, Harold Pafford of Corner Brook. When her mother remarried after her father's death due to illness Hilda became part of a combined family of 20 children. Hilda completed her education in St. John's and moved to Corner Brook where she met and married her first husband Harold Gabriel in 1938. They raised their family of six children in Sydney. Hilda had fond memories of her time working at Colby Market and the Salvation Army and after she was widowed in 1964 realized a childhood dream of operating a grocery store as owner of Hillside Dairy on George Street in Sydney. At 53, she started a career as owner of a hotel/ boarding house on Brazil Square in St. John's. She worked tirelessly there to provide a home atmosphere for her guests, often entire families from coastal communities visiting relatives in hospital. While in St. John's, Hilda met and married her second husband, Bill Lake. They shared a happy marriage in Sydney and Newfoundland until his death in 2005. Hilda regularly attended Christ Church in Sydney where she volunteered in the Altar Guild. An avid reader, she valued learning and encouraged all her children to educate themselves. All those who have known Hilda will remember her as a loving person whose life was centered on her home, family and friends. Hilda is survived by her children, Reg (Helen), British Columbia, Bill (Joan, deceased), Ontario, Harold (Pat) Bridgewater, Linda (Ib Lauritsen), Ontario, David (Sandra), Sydney, and Gordon (Bev), Sydney; grandchildren, Linda Marie, Reggie, James, Harold, Matthew, Erica, Charlie, Donna, Kim, Christine, Geoffrey, Ruth, Emily, Carrie Ellen, Michael, Adam; step grandchildren, Tosha, Anne, Nancy, Jason, Tracy and great-grandchildren, David, Emma, Lily, Theo, Nicholas, Hilary, Matthew, Ciara, Ella, Lucas, Jamie, Jacob, Lindsay, Dorian, Keagan and Lakelin. Born in Scotch Lake, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ann (MacInnis) MacDonald. Mary was a member of St. Andrews Church, Boisdale. Mary loved to travel, spending time in Montreal working. She returned home to become a hairdresser. She worked at O'Connors Beauty Salon in Sydney Mines, while living in Scotch Lake with her brother Allan and his family. Upon retirement, Mary moved to Long Island to live with her sisters. Mary is survived by her sisters, Theresa MacDonald, with whom she resided, Margaret Walsh, Scotch Lake, Joan Jessome, Ontario; and sister-in-law, Theresa Mac Donald, Halifax. She was a loyal and trusted aunt to her 40 nieces and nephews and their families. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Anne Young, her brothers, Joe, John and his wife Babe, Angus and his wife Marie, Malcolm, Allan and his wife Irene, three brothers in infancy and her brothers-in-law, Matt Walsh and James Young. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ************************************************** Anthony 'Tony' Orychock Born in: Whitney Pier, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: South Bar, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/10/2010 It is with great sadness that we, the family of Tony Orychock announce his passing on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, in the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Whitney Pier, he was the youngest son of the late Anthony and Anastasia (Hopluk) Orychock. Tony was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Brockville Rifles, and upon returning he married his wife of 64 years, Catherine (McNeil) Orychock. Tony worked as an electrician at Sydney Steel and retired from the electrical department as a supervisor in 1984. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family whether it was regular Sunday dinners 'down the Bar' or on the dance floor at family functions from weddings to Old New Years. Tony loved having gatherings at the house with music being played surrounded by family and friends. Tony is survived by his wife, Catherine; and their five sons, Tony (Dale), Donald (Susan), Paul (Rita), Lorne (Jennifer), Michael (Amber) and daughter-in-law, Glenda Orychock, all of Sydney. He was "Jodge" to 11 grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer), Lisa (Jamie), Craig (Susanne), Tonya (Chris), Catherine, Paul, Andrew, Kassia, Alexander, Michael, Matthew and step grandchildren, Blaire and Bradley. Tony is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kailey, Allie, Lucas, Kyle, Eric, Hanna and step great-grandchildren, Ewan and Carter. They all brought him great joy in his later years. Tony is also survived by his sisters, Annie Hewak, Charlotte (Clarence) Landry; his sister-in-law, Mary Orychock, as well as a large extended Orychock and McNeil families. Besides his parents, Tony was predeceased by his sisters, Nellie Litowski, Agnes Ojoleck, his brother, Stanley Orychock, and a grandson in infancy. There will be no visitation for the late Tony Orychock. Funeral mass to celebrate Tony's life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Agnes was a graduate of St. Martha's Hospital School of Nursing, Antigonish. Family was always the central focus of mother's life. She always opened her heart and home to all and enjoyed baking and cooking for family, especially her grandchildren.
