Theresa (Curry) McSween Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/11/2010 Theresa (Curry) McSween died very peacefully at Habourstone Enhanced Care on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010. Theresa was the only child of the late Madeleine (Briand) and Daniel Curry. She was a devoted daughter to her mother. Theresa's father died when she was a young child. Theresa was a longtime employee of Nova Scotia Power where she was secretary to Mr. Wilfred Kaiser. She often spoke fondly of her years working at NSP. There, Theresa developed many lifelong friendships which she cherished until her death. Theresa was a loyal and treasured friend to many. Theresa has gone to be with her much loved and recently deceased husband, Daniel B. McSween. Theresa and Daniel shared a very special relationship during their 37 years of marriage. Mourning her loss are her aunt and uncle, Tommy and Bessie Sampson. Theresa is also survived by many cousins. Grieving her loss are her sister-in-law, Anne Currie and her much loved niece, Carole Anne (Gareth) Patterson. Theresa is also survived by brothers-in-law, George McSween and Bob Donahue. Theresa also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Theresa will be sadly missed by her dear friends, Margie Bruno and Janet MacKinnon. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Currie. Many thanks are given to the staff of Irish Cove, Harbourstone for their attentive care. A special thank you to Kathy and Carol for the extraordinary care and attention they gave to Theresa. There will be visitation for Mrs. McSween from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in Theresa's memory may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to twcurry.com ************************************** Vera Katherine Howie Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 05/11/2010 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Katherine Howie.Vera passed away Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney. Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Daniel A. and Sadie (Lynk) Hillier of Glace Bay, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Vera was a member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay, where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the UCW. She was also a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son, Wayne, Glace Bay; and daughter, Agnes (Ian) Rennie of Chateauguay, Que. She is also survived by three grandsons, Darren (Kelly), Halifax, Scott (Kim), Ottawa, and Trent, Halifax; two granddaughters, Kim (Rob) Cameron, Nanaimo, B.C., and Allyson Rennie, Mercier, Que. She leaves eight great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Keith, Ottawa, Malcolm and Alec, Halifax, Duncan and Kate Cameron, Nanaimo, B.C. and Kelsey and Sam Brunette, Mercier, Que. Besides her parents Vera was predeceased by her husband Lester in 1972, and her brothers William and Robert. In honoring Vera's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. The Eastern Star will hold their service at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. We the family would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of the Cove for their kindness and compassion shown to mom over the almost 15 years she was a resident. Also a special thank you to Maggie Currie who became a very special friend to our mother. No flowers by request. Memorial donations in Vera's memory may be made to a charity of choice. Gillis Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 02/11/2010 Christena 'Tena' Elizabeth Gillis, 82, of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at the residence. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Mary (MacKinnon) Gillis. Tena was a former member of St. Theresa parish, Sydney. She is survived by nieces, Sheryl Hood, Christine (Darren) Hasara, both of New Jersey; nephews, Wayne (Carol) Hood, Illinois and Neal Hood, New York; and brother-in-law, James Hood Jr. She was predeceased by brother, Daniel Gillis and sister, Helen Hood. Funeral mass for the late Tena Gillis will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Church with Rev. Conrad Edwards officiating. Family suggests memorials to St. Theresa Church or donor choice. Online condolences may be sent to www.twcurry.com. ************************************** John Malcolm MacKinnon Born in: Meadows Road, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney Forks, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/11/2010 Surrounded by his loving family, John Malcolm MacKinnon passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born at Meadows Road, he was the son of the late Neil P. and Bessie (Fraser) MacKinnon. He was a member of St. Mary's parish, East Bay, and was a retired steelworker with over 30 years of service. Malcolm was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan who loved to read, but even more so, to entertain with a good story or talk politics. Malcolm will be always remembered by his wife, Marguerite (MacKinnon); daughters, Ann Marie MacInnes (Deryl), Sydney, Katie and Maggie, both at home; sons, Edward (Kim), Calgary, Robert (Julie), Art (Gina), both of Victoria, B.C., John (Brenda), Sydney, and Kenny (Tracey), Baddeck. He is also survived by brothers, John, Neil, his twin, Michael (Cecelia) and Bernie, all of Sydney; and sisters, Mary, Theresa, both of Sydney, and Minnie (Patrick), Boston; by 12 grandchildren, Cassandra, Robbie, Emily, Mathew, Corrie, Jonathan, Megan, Brianna, Kara, Mary, Abbie, Emma and one great-grandchild, Ambrose Malcolm. Predeceased by his first wife, Marguerite LeClair, son, Leonard (Joanne), sister, Peggy, and three sisters in infancy, Betty, Mary and Annie.
