A resident at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, (Spanish Bay) for the past 13 months, Bill was always proud of being from New Waterford where he was born and always returned. He worked most of his life as a coal miner and retired for Lingan mine in 1992. Prior to severe brain injury sustained after being struck by a car in 2002, Bill was an avid sportsman, but his true passion was a good dart game, at which he excelled and won countless awards. An enthusiastic traveler, he made countless trips across his beloved Cape Breton, mainland Nova Scotia and then on to Newfoundland, Ontario and British Columbia. Many of those trips were made after his "accident", proof of his determination and strength. He was a loving and devoted husband to Frances (Fougere) McKinnon, Sydney and the late Sabina (Ley) McKinnon. Special dad to his children and stepchildren, Rose Marie (Clarke) McKinnon, Glace Bay, Noelle (Blair) Pyke, Leitches Creek, Tammy (Jeff) McKinnon, Truro, Billy Jr., New Waterford; stepchildren, Linda (Harold) Epton, Ottawa; Tony (Madonna) Loiselle, Sydney. Forever "Poppy" to Christopher Spencer; Tiffany Pyke; Natasha Dyer-Loiselle; Sarah and Victoria Epton; great-granddad to Machala. He is survived by his sisters, Faye (Fred) McPhee, Glace Bay, Utah (Mario) Hogan, New Waterford; brother, Gordie, New Waterford and sister-in-law, Linda MacKinnon (late Howie), New Waterford; stepsister, Greta Kearney. Also survived by his mother-in-law, Josephine MacDougall, Lower Sackville; brothers-in-law, Bob (Sam) Fougere, Halifax, Al (Darlene) Fougere, Powell River, B.C., Jerry Fougere, Vancouver; sisters-in-law, Betty (Gerald) MacDonald, Antigonish, Annette Parker (Jake MacKinnon), Stewiacke/Antigonish. The Ley family; brothers-in-law, Wilfred (Eileen) Ley, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Louise (Howie) McCallum, Sydney, Mary (Tony) Leudy, New Waterford, Isabelle (Ken) Smith, Toronto and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and Sabina he was predeceased by his dear brother, Howie MacKinnon; stepsister, Theresa Marsh; in-laws, Florence (Ley) MacPhee-Hogan and Jimmy MacPhee and Alex Ley. A funeral mass to celebrate his life will take place at Parish Church of St. Leonard's, Mt. Carmel Ave., Thursday at 10 a.m. Rev. Ray Huntley will officiate. Burial to follow at Mt. Carmel cemetery. The McKinnon family would like to thank the staff of Spanish Bay for their patience and kindness toward Bill and his family over the past months and to all departments of Harbourstone Enhanced Care who helped make his stay with them more comfortable. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Eva (Clarke) Scantlebury. As president, Ronald was heavily involved with the reconstruction of the Menelik Hall. He was a dog trainer, who helped a lot of neighbours train their dogs and enjoyed spending time fishing. Surviving are his sister, Eva Paulette Price, Memphis, Tenn.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Born in North Sydney, Paul is the son of Paula Fraser (Blaise LeBlanc) and Paul (Lori) Forrest. He was a member of the Militia of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders. Besides militia, Paul enjoyed from an early age, his time spent fishing with his mother and his grandfather, John Willie Fraser. He was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Besides his parents, Paul is survived by two sisters, Madison and Makayla; a stepbrother, Mitchell; a nephew, Colby; his uncle, Joey (Laura Lee) Fraser and their children, Jonathan and Melissa; his aunts, Joanne (Paul) Lynk and their children, Josh and Kate, and Judy (Diane) Fraser; his paternal grandparents, David and Florence Forrest; his aunts, Deneene Forrest (Roger), Joeliene (Duane) Jessome, Doreen Keagan, Shelly Forrest (Troy), his uncles Travis (Laurie) Forrest, Don (Laurie) Forrest, David (Eileen) Forrest; stepsister and brother, Morgan and Dalton Leblanc; also many nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Timothy Forrest. Alice was born in Wilburn, Inverness County, and was the daughter of the late Archibald and Flora (MacDonald) MacLellan. Prior to becoming a devoted wife and mother Alice went to business school and was employed in the secretarial field. Her greatest joys were reading and spending time with family and friends. Violet was born in Glace Bay to the late Jack and Lillian (Curtis) Hiscock. Violet is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years, Alfred; son, Wayne (Kathy); and only grandchild, Pamela, who she loved and adored. Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Agostino and Anglina (Caverzan) Polegato. Elvio was employed in the construction industry as an ironworker, retiring in 1986 as an industrial mechanic at Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant. He was a member of long-standing with the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth 'Betty' (Rice); sons, David, Sydney and Andrew (Wendy), Amherst; brother, Angelo, Niagara Falls; loving grandchildren, Cara and Drew, Amherst; sister-in-law, Jean Rice, Toronto; aunt, Elsie Percy, Sydney River. Elvio was predeceased by his sister, Mary Morellato and a sister in infancy; brothers, John and Redensio. There will be no visitation.
