(formerly of 35 Spring St., Sydney), passed away on Aug. 9, 2011, after a courageous fight against cancer. Mel was born in Glace Bay and spent most of his formative years in Whitney Pier. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. Mel worked with Modern City Dairy and later Scotsburn Dairy, from 1966-2001. After retirement, Mel enjoyed spending time in his workshop doing various woodworking projects, as well as extensively travelling. Most of all, Mel enjoyed spending time with his family. Mel was a skilled craftsman and a devoted family man, who frequently travelled to Ontario and the United Kingdom to visit his daughters, until eventually taking up residence with his younger daughter in Ontario in 2009. Mel was the son of the late Nicholas Evely and Gladys Pike, formerly of Newfoundland. He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Carrie (John Rolls) and Paula (Bruce Burghgraef); five sisters, Ursula (Ernest) Yates, Vera (Thomas) Young, Helen (Wilson) Hunt, Delores (Robert) Primmer and Hazel(Sylvester) Saniga. Mel is also survived by four brothers, Nick, Bill, Lloyd and Al. He was predeceased by his sister, Pauline (Walter) Crane. Burial will take place on Monday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. at Resurrection Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating and reception to celebrate Mel's life will take place at Grand Lake Road fire hall from 6-8 p.m. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice. ************************************ Rev. Joseph Walker Born In: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Passed Away In: Red Islands, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 10/08/2011 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, son and brother, Rev. Joseph Walker, 47, of Edmonton, Alberta, following a courageous but brief struggle with cancer. Joe passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the home of his parents in Red Islands, Cape Breton, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he was the son of John and Carmaine (Tucker) Walker. He was raised in Sydney where he received his early education. Joseph proved to be a true academic from a very early age. He participated in many school activities while attending Sydney Academy, including debating model parliament. He was class valedictorian at his high school graduation. Following high school Joe attended University of King's College, Halifax, from which he graduated with a BA (Honours) in Classical languages. Besides receiving both a Masters in Classical languages and a Masters in Religion from the University of Toronto, he was also the recipient of awards for his thesis. Joe was an excellent writer and received an award for his blog, "Felix Hominum," on which he had many followers. He had a great love for music, especially jazz. He loved to sing and had a talent for both the piano and guitar. Joe was ordained an Anglican minister on June 3, 2001. He was an Anglican Chaplain at the University of Edmonton prior to becoming pastor at Morinville. At the time of his passing, he was Rector at St. Timothy's Church, Edmonton. Joe was well respected by his colleagues, loved by his parishioners and touched the lives of everyone he met. He was a true family man and exemplified this in his dedication and devotion to his wife and children. Besides his parents, Joe is survived by his loving wife Alisa (Ketchum) and four beautiful children, Emily, Sarah, Adam and Justin; sisters Rhonda Walker Whidden (Brian), Halifax, Carolyn (Bill) Bagnell, Warman, Saskatchewan, and brother David (Paula), Burlington, Ont. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16 at Sacred Heart Church in Johnstown, reception to follow in the church hall. Burial to take place at a later date from All Saint's Anglican Cathedral, Edmonton, Alta. *********************************** Rita (MacInnis) Broley Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: Ajax, Ontario, Canada Passed Away On: 08/08/2011 The passing of Rita Elizabeth (MacInnis) Broley, 83, formerly of Alexandra St., Sydney, occurred Aug. 8, 2011 in Ajax, Ont. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Campbell) MacInnis. Rita lived in Ontario most of her adult life. Rita visited Cape Breton often to fully enjoy her extended family and partake in her fondness for music and Cape Breton friendship. She was loved by family and friends to whom she had always shown an abundance of generosity and kindness. Rita will be sadly missed. Rita is survived by her three sons, Danny (Janine), Jimmy (Linda), Gregory (Susan) and her daughter, Angela Cameron (late John Allan). She also leaves behind her brother, Cyril (Lydia), Christie MacInnis (sister-in-law) and several great-grandchildren, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In her senior years, she resided with Angela and her grandson, Stuart Cameron, who provided her daily love and care. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by M. Walker (Steve) Broley, the father of her children; three brothers, Dan Joe, John Archie and William; two sisters, Theresa (late Maurice 'Buddy' Arsenault) and Marjorie (late Ken Watson). Garland was a longtime resident of Braemore Home, Sydney River, before being transferred to the Northside Community Guest Home. He was born in Gaultois, Nfld., he was the son of the late Alexander Lilly and Alice (Matchem) (Lilly) Matthews. Following the death of his father, he moved with his mother and sisters to North Sydney in 1958. Garland enjoyed many happy hours with his late stepfather, Ernest Matthews, watching the Newfoundland vessels come and go. Born in Glace Bay, N.S., Wendell was the son of the late Norman and Hazel (Bond) MacDonald. Wendell was a family man who enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a member of the Lion's Club. Born in River Bourgeois, Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late Cyprian and Phyllis (Bouchie) Burke. During the Second World War, Lexie worked in an airplane factory, retiring from Mt. Allison University, where she worked as a housekeeper. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. ***************************************** Dr. David Richardson Born In: Pitapuram, India Born On: 06/11/1949 Passed Away In: North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 02/08/2011 Dr. David Richardson was born in Pitapuram, India, on Nov. 6, 1949 to Baptist Missionary parents, Betty (Burnett) and Joseph Irwin Richardson. On Aug. 2, 2011, in his 61st year, David passed from this life to the next. His early years were spent in India, and then in 1960, his family moved to Vancouver where David graduated from Prince of Wales High School, having been class president. David received his B.A. in Mathematics from U.B.C. [67-71]; M.Sc. in Mathematics from U. of Toronto [71-72] and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Institute Mittage-Leffler (Sweden) [73-77]/U.B.C. [78]. During this time he also completed a Research Fellowship at M.I.T./Harvard [74-75]. David was honoured to receive many academic awards. When David met his future wife, Mary Jane Sievenpiper, his academic direction changed to focus on veterinary medicine and he graduated from W.C.V.M. [78-82]. His interest in mathematics continued as he taught adult education / extension programs, in mathematics and other sciences for the U. of Saskatchewan while simultaneously pursuing his veterinary degree. David enjoyed working in veterinary medicine and he looked at each pet's problem as if it were his own. In addition, he felt it important that the pet's guardian had a comprehensive understanding of the ailment and proposed treatment. David had many hobbies: He was a passionate sailor. He owned and maintained a 1926 R Class yacht and enjoyed sailing in competitions or just for recreational fun. In his younger years he took pleasure in collecting and restoring older British cars, motorcycles and even antique furniture. In later years he developed a passion for golf. He bred and showed English Setters and was instrumental in bringing pet therapy programs to Cape Breton. One of these programs was the development of reading to pets at libraries and elementary schools. David was predeceased by his parents and his mother-in-law, Joyce (Parker) Sievenpiper. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Mary Jane Sievenpiper; his sister, Elizabeth (Jean) Fares; his father-in-law, Peter Sievenpiper; brother-in-law, Bruce (Cindy) Sievenpiper; sisters-in-law, Beth (Richard) Sievenpiper Jones and Jill (Bruce) Sievenpiper McQuitty; plus numerous nieces and nephews in B.C. and Western Australia. Mary Elizabeth Nugent on August 11, 2011. Born in Bras d'Or she was a daughter of the late George and Annie (Young) Jones. Mary was a member of St. Stephens parish, Florence. She was a devoted wife and loving mother of five children. One of her favourite past times was playing cards with family and friends. She spent the last few years residing at the Northside Community Guest Home where she enjoyed various activities and time with friends. Born in Sydney on Jan. 13, 1922, Roy was the son of the late Duncan and Florence (MacLean) MacMillan. He lived most of his life at the family residence first occupied by his parents in 1908. Rosie was a Centurian baby, having been born in 1922; 100 years after the family immigrated from Scotland (aboard the Commerce). He is survived by his son, Duncan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been predeceased by brothers, Bruce, Charles, Art; sisters Catherine, Laura, Pearl, Grace, Eva and Muriel. Rosie was a well known sports figure in hockey, football, rugby, baseball and basketball. He had a stellar career with St. FX University, Dalhousie, The Sydney Millionaires and the Antigonish Bulldogs. He was an inductee into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame for multi-sports in 2000. A graduate of St. FX University and attended Dalhousie University, Rosie spent his career in the insurance industry. He was the owner of Keltic Agency until his retirement. A true 'man about town', Rosie was a popular and well liked individual. He was a member of the Lingan Golf Club, Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Kiwanis, Branch 12 Legion, to name a few. He spent many a pleasant moment with his lifelong buddies at his summer residence in Malagawatch, Cape Breton. In his later years he gained many a friend as he made his daily Tim Horton rounds. Visitation for Mr. MacMillan will take place on Sunday, Aug. 14 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel at 12 noon followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. officiated by Rev. Tom Whent. A reception will follow. He was the son of Theresa McNeil and the late Robert McNeil. Violet is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years, Alfred; son, Wayne (Kathy); and only grandchild, Pamela, who she loved and adored.
