Topics : CWA/TNG Local 30460 , Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall , Sydney Rotary Club , Cape Breton , Halifax , Newfoundland Fred Jackson, who served in the senior position in the Post newsroom for about 18 years, died at about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning in bed at home of a suspected heart attack. Jackson left the Post last year and was recently interviewed by the paper about a new business venture. He had been planning to open a micro-brewery and restaurant in the former Joe's Warehouse location in downtown Sydney. Jackson would have turned 55 on Monday. Funeral arrangements are pending. "We're all shocked down here," Jackson's brother Craig, who is news editor at the St. John's Telegram, said Wednesday morning. "He didn't show any signs of being sick or anything like that." The family suspects Jackson suffered a heart attack, but his body has been sent to Halifax for an autopsy, which is likely routine because of his relatively young age. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, and five daughters, Stephanie, Melissa, Jillian, Nicola and Carmen. "Obviously we were shocked to hear the news," Post publisher Anita DeLazzer said Wednesday. "Certainly it's way too young for anybody to go and our hearts and sympathies go out to Bea and his family." "It really took the wind out of your sails on a Wednesday morning to arrive at work and to hear that someone you had worked with for some 18 years had died suddenly at such a young age," said Steve MacInnis, president of CWA/TNG Local 30460, which represents unionized employees at the Post. "It was a complete shock and we can't imagine how the family is dealing with this news and our thoughts and prayers certainly go out to them." DeLazzer said Jackson's primary passion was his family. He also had a great enthusiasm for the news business and was an ardent community volunteer, working with local service clubs. Jackson, a Newfoundland native, became managing editor at the Post after leaving a position as assistant managing editor at the St. John's Telegram. He had also been a sports reporter and editor at the Telegram and worked as a sports reporter at the now-defunct St. John's Daily News. DeLazzer noted Jackson worked in the newsroom during a tremendous period of change both in the news industry and in Cape Breton. "He was always worried about the out-migration in the community," she said. "Fred always said that he came from Newfoundland, but he made Cape Breton his home and always wanted to make Cape Breton stronger." In 2005, Jackson was named to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. His induction recognized his contributions to softball in that province as an athlete, coach, administrator and volunteer. Jackson served as president of Sydney Rotary Club and chaired the Sydney Academy school advisory council. He was a former member and chair of the Salvation Army advisory board for Cape Breton, served on the St. Anthony Daniel Parish Council and served on the Cape Breton Sports Heritage committee. The board of Loaves and Fishes issued a statement Wednesday expressing its sympathy to Jackson's family. It noted that his dedication to his role as board member and chair was untiring, adding he constantly worked behind the scenes to make the community kitchen a better place to serve those in need. Several readers and people who Jackson came into contact with over the years through his work at the paper expressed condolences for the Jackson family on the Post's website, Twitter and Facebook pages. Funeral arrangements are pending. For information on the arrangements, call TW Curry Parkview Chapel at 539-3002. ****************************************************************************************************** Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CBGHA http://www.cbgen.org
