Born Feb. 10, 1922, in Point Edward, he was the son of the late Percy and Lillan (Beaton) Hill. Doug worked as a carpenter with Sydney Engineer and Drydock until his retirement. Dad loved fishing, hunting, driving on his ATV, and in his garden. Dad was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was truly loved by all who had the good fortune to have known him. Doug is survived by his wife of 63 years, Oretha; daughters, Shirley (Wilburn) Hill, Point Edward, Alberta (John) Carey, Balls Creek, Kimberley (Ritchie) Matthews, North Sydney; sons, William (Betty), Frenchvale, Randy (Dawn), Point Edward, Gerald, Sydney; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Doug is also survived by one brother, Ashly (Eileen), Louisbourg. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his five sisters, Pauline Hill, Catherine Brown, Mildred Penticost, Pearl Rudderham, Irene Nickless; six brothers, Ernest, Percy, Clarence, Francis, Hanson and Stewart. MacQuarrie, age 56, of Davenport Road, Sydney, and a former resident of Hinchey Avenue, New Waterford, on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, in Fort McMurray, Alta., as the result of an industrial accident. Born in New Waterford, George was the son of his caring mother, Mary Georgina 'Dodie' (McGillivray) MacQuarrie and the late John MacQuarrie. Wherever he was, George always considered himself a New Waterford boy and would always state that, 'New Waterford was the center of the universe.' He was a sports fanatic, an intellectual, highly opinionated and a proud father to his children. George started his working career as a coal miner in Cape Breton. After Devco closed, he travelled out to Grande Cashe, Alta. and Campbell River, B.C. to work in the mines. George returned to Sydney and went back to school and received his third class stationery engineer degree and was employed by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality for five years. He later got his pipe fitter ticket and was employed in Fort McMurray, Alta., for several years. George was a devoted husband to Fonda (MacDonald) MacQuarrie and loving father to daughters, Andrea (26), Jennifer (23) and Caitlin (22), all living at home. Well loved by his vast family and friends, George is survived by sisters, Jackie (Colonel MacLellan) and their children, Jamie, Rochelle, Ronnie, second sister, Linda (Tim Keddy) and their children, Ian and Joshua, youngest sister, Michelle (Pat Busnello), their children, Matthew and Lucas; as well as his brother, Danny (Rachael MacLellan) and their children, Tanya and Terra-Lyn. George is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Pius and Rhoda MacDonald, who held him in high regard. He also leaves behind a great family of aunts and uncles on his mother's side, Theresa 'Tecie,' Alice 'Otie,' Ray and Donald 'Donnie.' On his fathers side he leaves behind, Mary, Margaret, Anna, Kay, Sadie, Wilina and Tom. In addition a large extended family also mourn his passing. Besides his father, George was predeceased by aunts and uncles, Alex, Eddie, May, Bernice, Donald, Greg and Edward. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley, is Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard's Church followed by a reception in the parish hall on Convent Street. Cremation to follow. Online condolences to the family can be expressed through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca. *********************************** Jerome Gillis Born In: Grand Mira, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away In: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed Away On: 04/08/2011 Jerome Gillis, age 101, of New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at the New Waterford Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends. Born in Grand Mira in 1910, he was the son of the late Daniel and Mary (MacDonald) Gillis. Jerome was a loyal and staunch member of the former St. Agnes Church. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders. In 1946 he went to working in the coal mines, retiring after many years of service. He was a long time active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 15, New Waterford. Jerome was a self taught man that lead an interesting life venturing into many fields of endeavour. Jerome was a hobo in the 30s, joined the army in the 40s, became a coal miner in the 50s and 60s, retired from mining in the 70s and throughout he fervently enjoyed his many interests of hunting, fishing, reading, gardening, playing cribbage, watching the Toronto Blue Jays, listening to Scottish music and folklore, the pipes, drums and the odd nip of good scotch whiskey with friends and family. But Jerome's first and only love was his wife, the late Sally (McNeil) Gillis, who he again will lovingly hold in his arms. Jerome basked in the joy of his extended family. He is survived by his brother, John P. of Livonia, Mich., granddaughter, Starlett and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Jerome was predeceased by a son, Bernie; sisters, Helen, Josie, Katie, Margaret; brothers, James A., and Donald. Jerome gave generously to the church and local hospitals over the years. To the end he was fortunate to have all his faculties intact. He was still swimming and fishing up to a couple of years ago. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Jerome's cousin, Fr. Born in Sydney Mines, Cameron was the son of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Todd) LeBlanc. Cameron was a member of the Salvation Army and Community Involvement of the Disabled, Sydney. He was employed at the NSCC, Port Hawkesbury, inventory control until his retirement. He enjoyed life, was crafty and inventive when it came to making the most of any situation. He loved to socialize by playing cards, games and attending community events. Cameron was a loving and caring husband. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his independence and never being afraid of hard work. Cameron is survived by his wife, Patricia (Brewer) LeBlanc; children, Heather (Nigel) Cadogan, Bill (Juanita) Laurie, Pam LeBlanc and Billy Peterson; grandchildren, Jessy, Jeffery, Miranda, Antonia, Emily, Anthony and Tyra and a great-grandson, Landon. He is also survived by his brothers, Jim (Sheila), Ralph (Pat), Melvin (Debbie), Kenny; brother in-law, Courtney; mother in-law, Olive Brewer as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Edward passed away peacefully at Victoria County Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. Edward was born March 12, 1937 in Grand Anse, Richmond County. He was the son of the late John Alex and Mable (MacRae) MacDonnell. Edward/Dubby/Papa was a jack of all trades; he could turn his hand to anything. Dubby had the greatest sense of humour and a love of children, animals, fishing and most of all wood working. He was a kind, gentle and most generous man. He and his trusted K-9 friend Angus could be found most evenings listening to his great love of Newfoundland music or playing cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed his many trips to Alberta to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edward retired from his job at Victoria County Landfill in 1999 due to ill health. Edward is survived by his one great love and constant companion, Mable (MacRae) MacDonnell; four children, Doris (Leonard) Pierrard, George (Linda) MacRae, Jamie (Missy) MacRae, Jocelyn (Mark) Fitzgerald; nine grandchildren, Shelley (Richard), James, Casey (Cody), Kristie (Derek), Layton, Keagan, Lennus, Christopher and Emily; three great-grandchildren, Hailey, Abbie and Eric, and finally his trusted K-9 friend Angus. He is also survived by his brothers, Duncan (Nancy) MacDonnell, Ralph and John MacDonnell and sisters, Annie (Barry) Reid, Isabell MacDonnell, Kaye MacDougal, Ethel (Paul) Gartlan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great friends. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah (McInnis) Bisson. Evangeline is survived by her son, Gerald Jr. (Lorna), Sydney; grandchildren, Liam, Tristen, Brett, Breanne and Blake, Sydney; sister, Cecelia 'Spicky' MacIntyre, New Waterford. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Davis Sr.; sisters, Florence, Maggie, Molly, Theresa and Katie; brothers, Ernest, Johnny, Peter, Wilfred, Bernie and Joe. Evangeline was a graduate of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Class of 1953, with her diploma of registered nursing. Following graduation, she worked for many years at local area hospitals in the capacity of surgical nurse, lab technology and private duty nursing. For over 25 years, Evangeline was an avid skater. She skated on a weekly basis at the local arenas, deriving great satisfaction from her sport and valuing the many friends she made through her skating activities. Evangeline often remarked that, if she had taken another life path, she would have pursued a career in professional skating. Another great passion she indulged was interior decorating. Evangeline possessed eloquent taste in this area. She was a woman of class and immense generosity and spirit. Evangeline loved her grandchildren dearly and without bounds. If angels do exist, she was mine. Evangeline was the best of us and we are the richer for her presence. She will be forever missed. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday 11 a.m., with Rev.
