Gyorfi Born in: Targu, Romania Passed away in: Howie Centre, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 17/12/2010 Dr. A.W. Gyorfi, 86, of Howie Centre, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Targu, Romania, he was the son of the late Alexander and Margit Gyorfi of Hungary. He was educated in many parts of the world such as University of Cluj, Budapest, Halle An Der Salle, Germany, Brussels University, McGill University, Acadia University. He graduated and got married in 1949, and emigrated from Belgium in 1952. He established the laboratory at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, worked in New Waterford, North Sydney, Sydney Mines and St. Rita Hospital in Sydney for 40 years. He was a fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Bio Chemistry, a member of the resident staff of the Montreal Children's Hospital, the New York Academy of Science, The Canadian Society of Cytology, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the Szechenyi Society and the Canadian Society of Clinical Scientists. He was a friend of the Raptors and helped establish Wild Life Habitat in Cape Breton; he represented Canada at the International Pathology Congress in Brussels during the world fair in 1958. He was the Assistant Provincial Commissioner of the Boy Scouts in Nova Scotia and received the wood badge. He was the Founder of Camp Carter Boy Scout Camp in New Harris, C.B., in 1966 and was awarded the 125th Anniversary Canadian Confederation Medal. He received numerous awards and certificates for his efforts in many fields. His hobbies were scouting, fishing, scuba diving, stamp collecting, sailing, skiing, hiking, horseback riding, music, wood working, antiques, wine making and photography. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Angela (Jan); daughter, Patricia of Calgary; sons, Alexander 'Rick' (Debbra-Anne) of Ontario, Steven of West Lake Ainslie, Craig of Halifax, Dennis of South Lake Ainslie, and Peter of Sydney; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Besides his parent he was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite and a grandson, Terrance. There will be visitation for Dr. Gyorfi from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. There will be a grave side service Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, with Fr. Will MacPherson officiating. Online condolences can be made to the family by visiting TWCurry.com. ****************************************************** William Lawrence Barrett Born on: 28/06/1936 Passed away on: 19/12/2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished brother, father, grandfather, uncle, partner and friend, William Barrett at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Dec. 19, 2010. William was the son of the late William and Hughena (Richards) Barrett. William will always be remembered for his kind heart and his amazing ability to make everyone smile. William touched many hearts during his 25 years working at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre and made many memories during his time at the Cape Breton Post in his advertising position. Billy will be greatly missed and forever thought of by his son, Bill Barrett (Mary-Tanya); his partner, Linda Gaudet and extended family, Angela and David Gaudet (Shawna); sisters, Dianna Marie MacDonald (Vincent) and Shirley MacPhail (Clarence); his brother, Kenny Barrett (Nellie) and brother in-law, Roddie MacInnis. He will live on in the hearts of his grandsons, Robert and Nicholas Barrett and Noah and Cohen Gaudet. Billy will also be remembered by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and his very special friends. Besides his parents,William was predeceased by his sister, Kay MacInnis and nephew, Gregory MacInnis. We would all like to send our thanks and appreciation to Dr. Paul MacDonald, Dr. Brake, Dr. Abel, Palliative Care and the wonderful staff in the Step Down unit of 4A who became a second family to Billy. She died as she lived, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Genevieve (Confiant) Wilmot. In earlier years, Frances was a resident of Water Street and New Aberdeen where she was a faithful member of Holy Cross Church and St. John's Church, both in Glace Bay. A stay-at-home Mom, she devoted her life to her family, which included cooking her famous Sunday dinners, making homemade bread and baking pies and sweets. Frances was a very quiet and kindhearted lady who in her spare time enjoyed going out to play bingo with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Betty (Cornelious) MacIsaac, Howie Center, Marie (Michael) Keith, Halifax, Gladys (Lawrence) Anderson, British Columbia, Donna Marie (Francis) Andrecyk, Darlene (Dan) LeBlanc, both of Glace Bay; sons, John, British Columbia, Pat, Glace Bay, William (Audrey), Mira, Kevin (Karen), Bridgewater; brother, Dan Wilmot, Sydney; 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edward, son, Greg, brothers, John, William and sister, Mary. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A mass celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will be in St. Anne's Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Frances may be made to the Palliative Care Society. He was the son of Alicia Conrad and Joseph D. Matthews of Sydney. A funeral service, under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, will be held at a later date. Jed passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax, after a brief illness. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late George and Verna (Hoeg) Clarke. Jed is survived by his sons, Darren (Terry Lynn), Jerry and Shaun (Carolyn); and their mother, Mary Jessome; his grandchildren, Destiny and Landon; his brother, Tom (Angie); his sisters, Donna (Joe), Debbie, Lynn, Tracey (Alton); his maternal grandmother, Ruth (Hoeg) Sichky; his special aunt, Marilyn; several nieces and nephews and close friends, Wessey, Emmy, Quincy, Walter and Kenny. Besides his parents, Jed was predeceased by his brother, Dennis. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date.
