Maria Rykers Raymond Petrie Clarence 'Tony' Cousins James Collier ******************************************************************************************************* Maria Rykers Born in: Schyndel, Holland, Netherlands Born on: 12/07/1916 Passed away in: Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 08/12/2010 Maria Johanna Rykers, 93 of Bedford, N.S., passed away peacefully on Dec. 8, 2010 at the QEII Hospital. Born in Schyndel, Holland on July 12, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Hendrika Peters and William Cromsigt. Mary immigrated to Canada in 1953 with her husband and six children. The family resided in Sydney. She worked as a nursing assistant at St. Rita Hospital for 20 years. She moved to Bedford in 1992. Mary spent the last few weeks at the QEII with her family at her side. She enjoyed a last St. Nicholas Day celebration on Dec. 6, 2010. She is survived by daughters, Joanne (Mike Lane), Sechelt, B.C., Henny, Bedford, Petra (Brian Hoyt), Maria (Philip Reeves), Sydney, N.S. and Helma, Slocan, B.C. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, William and son, William Jr. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. in T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, Bedford, where the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QEII. Online condolences may be made to tkbarnard@eastlink.ca. ****************************************************** Raymond Petrie Born in: New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 15/05/1939 Passed away in: Remington, Indiana, United States Passed away on: 07/12/2010 Dr. Raymond G. Petrie, 71, of Remington, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, in his home after a two-year battle with cancer. Born May 15, 1939, in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada, he was the son of the late Arthur and Patricia Petrie. He married Irene Vacon on July 8, 1967, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and she survives. A graduate of Mount Carmel High School in New Waterford, he received a bachelor of science degree from Saint Francis of Xavier University in 1960. After a year of teaching in Scotland, he graduated from Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax in 1968. Dr. Petrie was in family practice in New Waterford from 1968 to 1982, when he moved to Remington to open a family practice. He opened a second practice in Fowler, where he was still practicing at the time of his death. Since 2003 he was the medical director of Serenity Hospice. A veteran of the Canadian navy, he was the health officer of Benton County for several years and the medical director of Jasper County EMS. He had been a member of Phi Rho Sigma, American Medical Association, Indiana Medical Association, Canadian Medical Association, Nova Scotia Medical Association, Rotary International, John Purdue Club, Benton County Country Club and Curtis Creek Country Club. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Moira Rae Walbaum (husband, Daniel) of West Lafayette; a son, Steven Petrie (wife, Rebecca) of Fort Wayne and two brothers, Arthur Petrie (wife, Annette) of Dartmouth, N.S. and David Petrie (wife, Donna) of New Waterford. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Owen and Ellen Walbaum of West Lafayette. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Petrie of Halifax, N.S. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and voracious reader. Countless families benefited from Dr. Petrie's kind and compassionate care. His many friends appreciated his loyalty and sense of humour. Memorial visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Funeral mass on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 535 W. State St., in West Lafayette, officiated by Fr. Patrick Baikauskas and Fr. Don Gross. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to American Cancer Society or Serenity Hospice. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ****************************************************** Clarence 'Tony' Cousins Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada Passed away on: 03/12/2010 We regret to announce the passing of Clarence Anthony 'Tony' Cousins, 34, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2010, in St. Catharines. Born in Sydney Mines on Dec. 12, 1975, he was the son of Ronnie Cousins and Alice MacDonald. He was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. Tony worked on the lake boats. He also worked for the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board as a mechanic. He worked on his own as a mechanic the last number of years in St. Catharines. He is survived by his mother, Alice MacDonald; stepfather, Richard Quigley and his father, Ronnie Cousins. He is also survived by his most treasured accomplishment in life, daughter, Kristen Snow; grandmother, Mamie Cousins; his brothers, Troy Cousins and Patty MacDonald; lifelong friends, Willie Miller, Joey Strickland, Shawn Morrison and good friend, Joey Snow. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Violet and Jack MacDonald, Clara MacDonald, and Charlie Cousins. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass to celebrate Tony's life will be held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Ajit Kerketta officiating. Besides his father Jimmy is survived by his partner, Carol Walcott; their son, Travis and by son, James Jr.; daughters, Vivian and Sheila; also son, Jason and grandchildren. Also by sisters, Nancy and Donna Marie.
