Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary (Slade) Clarke. He was employed with the Sydney Steel Corp. until his retirement. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage, using his farm tractor, and spending time in Benacadie with his family and friends. George is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Bette (Leaver) Clarke; his son, Clarence Clarke, Sydney; his daughters, Charlotte (Buddy) MacDonald, Halifax, Shirley (Wayne) Campbell, Sydney, Kimberly Clarke (Wayne Phillips), Dartmouth, and Tammy (Kyle) Parker, Oromocto, N.B.; his 10 grandchildren, Jason, Jeffrey, Blair, Terri, Jonathan, Matthew, Todd, Craig, Chelsea and Kaleigh; and his 11 great-grandchildren. George is also survived by his sister, Margaret (Obed) Rice, Sydney; brother, Raymond (Gladys) Clarke, British Columbia, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Minnie, Mary, Jessie and Lila, brothers, Jack, Bob, Charlie and Jimmy. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Born in Sydney on Jan. 8, 1912, she was a daughter of the late James and Sadie Fitzgerald. Mary moved to St. John's, N.L., in the 1940s, where she owned and operated an Army & Navy Surplus store with her husband. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Jerry, son, Melvin, who died on the Ocean Ranger, daughter, Maxine and brother, Johnny. Left to mourn are her sister, Cassie Novak, Sydney; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place in St. John's, N.L., at a later date. I was born to Theresa Roylene Green and Steward MacKinnon Oct. 11, 1993 at St. Rita's Hospital in Sydney. I went through a lot of changes in my short life but always knew I was loved. I unwillingly leave behind my nannie, Theresa Brewster; poppie, George, Shawn and Alyssa who I resided with, Florence and Brian Sinclair, great-grandmother Isabel Brewster, great-grandfather, Roy Green; sisters Destiny, Jordan, Brada-Lee, Feeanna; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, godmother, Maxine Brewster. I was predeceased by grandfather, Chuppie Green; great-grandmother, Catherine Green; great-grandfather, Raymond Brewster. I know I will be greeted with open arms by them all. Born in Sydney Mines, Daniel was the son of the late Frank and Jessie (Cann) Powers. Daniel was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Daniel enjoyed spending time with his family especially with his children and grandchildren. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Hector MacNeil and the late Catherine Ann MacNeil of Nova Scotia. Eleven of her siblings predeceased her including two sisters of the CND-Sister St-Joseph Oriole and Sister St. Ann of the Blessed Sacrament. She leaves to mourn her loving sister Sarah Kennedy of Little Lorraine, N.S. and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Sister began her teaching career in the schools of the Montreal area and spent well over 20 years there. In 1967 in recognition of her work in teaching and in ministering to the poor in the Goose Village area she was presented with the Canada medal. Her last teaching assignment was in Richmond where she taught at St. Michael's and St. Francis schools. Following retirement from active teaching Sister Columba spent many years volunteering in her Richmond parish and serving the poor whom she loved. Visitation was held at Salle Marguerite Bourgeoys, 5017 Notre Dame de Grace Ave., on Dec. 6 from 7-9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Monica's Church, 6405 Terrebonne Ave. at 10 a.m. Dec. 7, 2010. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Della (Myers) MacDougall. She with her husband was faithful to the Lord at the Westside Bible Chapel and the Margaree Baptist Church. Margie is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, William 'Bill'; her two daughters, Marie (Doug) Phillips, Sydney, Bev (Fred) Gordon, Dartmouth; three grandchildren, Denise (Michael) MacIsaac, Heather (Dwight) Houston, Ondra (Paul) Dejager; seven precious great grandchildren. Born in Bras d'Or, Ida was the daughter of the late Frank and Theresa (McGrath) Cantwell. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Bras d'Or, and was involved in many aspects of her parish, including CWL. Ida was the last surviving chartered member of the Bras d'Or Pensioners Club. Surviving are her daughters, Melita, Gloria (Jack) Nicholson, Claudia (Earl) Warhus, Celesta (Nelson) Johnston, Miriam (Thomas) Boudreau, Monica (David) Beaton, Coletta; her sons, Damian (Carol), Wayne (Ann Marie), Paul (Patricia), Achillius 'Chicky' (Linda), Kennedy (Julie); her daughter-in-law, Cathy (Marsh) King; son-in-law, Danny Handley; her 42 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ****************************************************** Toby Ein Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 08/10/1919 Passed away in: Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 06/12/2010 Toby Ein passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay on Oct. 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Rebecca (Mirkin) Long. Toby was a graduate of the Glace Bay Hospital School of Nursing (1943) and worked in the nursing profession for a number of years in Glace Bay and Halifax. Toby was a pioneer in the retail clothing business in Cape Breton. She founded Toby's Fashion Center on Commercial Street in Glace Bay in 1955 and along with her husband, Isaac, operated Toby's, Ein's and Jeanland for many years until her retirement. Toby spent her retirement years in Pompano Beach, Florida and Albert Bridge, Mira where, as she often said, there was no place else on earth she would rather be. In her youth, Toby was an excellent athlete and in later years continued to enjoy playing golf and swimming, especially in the Mira River. She was a fabulous cook and was happiest when sitting at a large table surrounded by appreciative family and friends, enjoying one of her excellent meals. She was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel, Glace Bay and also the local chapter of Hadassah Wizo. She was predeceased by her husband, Isaac (2003); sisters, Sophie Obsgarten and Sally Maltzman; brothers, Sam, Harry, Israel, Nate and Jerry. She is survived by sons, Arnie (Barbara Fischer), Toronto, Robert (Carmen Carbone), New Jersey and David (Paula Michalik), Albert Bridge; grandchildren, Mathew and Gregory Ein and Alexander, Natalie and Spencer Ein and their mother, Ann O'Connell. Surrounded by his family, Donnie passed into the arms of his beloved wife and mother on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Care Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Archie and Jessie (MacLeod) MacEachern. He retired from the Cape Breton Regional Fire Dept in 2008. Prior to that he was employed by Eastern Transport. Donnie had a great love for horses and enjoyed the sport of harness racing and also watching his grandsons play hockey. He is survived by his loving daughters, Janet (Garrett) MacDonald of Coxheath and Laura (Raymond) MacLean of Sydney. He was also survived by sisters, Anna (Dave) Poirier and Mary (Dave) French, both of Sydney; as well as brothers, John (Paulette), Archie (Marilyn), Jim (Irene Hart), Len and Mike (Annette) all of Sydney and many nieces and nephews. Lastly, Papa is survived by his grandchildren, who were the great joys of his life, Riley, Thomas, and Mathew MacDonald and the apple of his eye his only granddaughter, Rae-Lyn MacLean. He was such a big part of their lives and provided them with love and guidance of his kind and gentle nature. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Sheila (Boutilier) MacEachern in 1990 and by his sister-in-law, Susan MacEachern. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Christine (MacQuarrie) MacDonald. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1939 and made her Religious Profession in 1942. Sister taught school over 37 years in Massachusetts, New York and Nova Scotia. She retired to the Mount in 1991, where she volunteered her services to the community in various ministries. She is survived by brother, Allan; sisters, Julia Mason, Jacqueline MacDonald, Ontario, Nora Hart, South Carolina. She was predeceased by sisters, Dolena, Mary, Hughena; brothers, Alex, Sam. The body was in Caritas Residence. Born in Glace Bay, September 6, 1934, Joe was the eldest son of the late Joseph and Sabaine (Odo) Mercer. Joe "Moe" worked as a coal miner for 37 years before retiring. He enjoyed the outdoors and often went hunting and fishing with his youngest brother Melvin and nephews Tom and Gary. Survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Tillie (Driscoll), daughter, Carol-Ann (Donald), son, Kevin, granddaughter, Lisa, grandson, Joey and great-grandson, Bradley, sisters, May (Jim), Millie, Mary Katherine (Ernie) Cochrane, Gladys Spencer, Georgina (Carl) MacDonald, brother, Melvin (Sylvia) Mercer, and many nieces and nephews.
