Alfreda 'Freda' MacLennan Basil Boutilier Joseph Aucoin Reginald Patterson Madge McLean William 'Bill' Burke ******************************************************************************************************* Alfreda 'Freda' MacLennan Born in: Point Aconi, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 05/07/1925 Passed away in: Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 28/12/2010 It is with great sadness and many fond memories we announce the passing of our mother, Alfreda MacLennan of Albert Bridge, "Out on the Mira." She passed away Dec. 28, 2010, and she died as she lived, with grace and dignity. Freda was born at the family home in Point Aconi on July 5, 1925. She was the only daughter of Thomas and Norah (MacLean) Bonner. She is survived by her three children, Gary (Darlene) MacLean, Albert Bridge, Joanne MacLean-Ellis (Jamie), Dartmouth, and Beverly MacLean-Corkum (Barrett), Chester Basin. She was a loving and caring grandmother to her grandsons Maclean and Patrick Ellis and her granddaughter Olivia Grace Corkum, and took great delight in all their accomplishments. Mom also kept in contact with a number of the MacLennan step-grandchildren and always enjoyed their visits to Mira. Her friend and companion Ivan Ross, with whom she shared so many wonderful days, also survives her. She remained very close to her nieces Judi Bonner and Kathy Harris and her nephew Tom Bonner and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Russell, her first husband, James MacLean, and her second husband, Dr. N.K. MacLennan. Mom had many close friends and always enjoyed sharing time with Jean Hines and her family, Jane, Jim, and Ian Lewis. Dottie Brennan was another true friend who always made several wonderful visits a year, highlighted by their annual swim in the Mira. Mom's life was greatly enhanced by the care she received from the wonderful Newfoundland Ladies, Bernetta (BB), Ellen, and Cassie, and she could always count on her good friend Anne-Marie Gushue in times of need. Mom was very proud of her military service, leaving home in 1942 at the age of 17 to enlist in the army, serving her country for three years during the Second World War. She was the first agent for Avis rent-a-car in Sydney and later ran the Hertz franchise for many years. She enrolled in the bachelor of arts program at St. FX Sydney Campus and was a proud graduate in 1982. Freda moved to the banks of the Mira River in 1974 and it was here she found her greatest joy. She always felt blessed to be able to look out her window or sit on her deck and watch the river roll by. Although she travelled extensively around the world, she always was thrilled to get back to her home on Hillside. She remained very active right up until her passing, was an avid bridge player and loved her time spent at the bridge club. Until quite recently, she enjoyed golf, particularly playing the Highland Links, skating and cross-country skiing. In recent years, she became a loyal Screaming Eagles fan and a bit of a 'hockey expert' and could often be heard discussing the team with her hockey buddy, Mabel Joseph. Mom was an outgoing and engaging person who made friends easily and she enjoyed having the opportunity to give back to her community through volunteer work. She was a member of the Old Sydney Society, was past president of the Cove Auxiliary and served on the board of Transition House. She will be missed by all who knew her. Arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. At her request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the chapel, Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Memorial donations can be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, P.O. Box 561, Sydney, B1P 6H4 or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca. Mom loved her family and they truly were her pride and joy. She never ended a phone call or conversation without the words that will stay with us all forever: "Love you much" ************************************************ Basil Boutilier Born in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/12/2010 On this day, Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, our family has lost a wonderful husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, good brother, and brother-in-law.
