Franklyn Pyke Lana Covey Gerard O'Handley Marion MacKinnon Ruth MacLeod Frances Josephine Coffin ******************************************************************************************************* Franklyn Pyke Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/11/2010 It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Franklyn C. Pyke on Nov. 30, 2010, at Huronview Home for the Aged in Clinton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn 'Kay'; cherished by his daughter, Cheryl (Mel) Hohner and loving grandfather of Julie and Michael Hohner, all of Clinton. He is also survived by sister, Eva (Sam) Karrel of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia; sisters-in-law, Hilda MacLennan, Jean Murray, both of Toronto and Audrey Hudson of Florida. Frank was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1917. He was predceased by his parents, Albert and Miriam Pyke and four brothers. Frank served in the armed forces 1937-1945. He then served in the Royal Canadian Air Force overseas and in Canada. Frank was a member of the Mocha Temple Shriners, Masonic Lodge AF & AM #309, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #140 Clinton. Cremation has taken place. Interment of ashes took place at Bairds' Cemetery, Dec. 11, 2010. ****************************************************** Lana Covey Born in: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born on: 15/10/1960 Passed away in: Dutch Brook, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 18/12/2010 It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Lana Covey, Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney Born in Sydney, Oct. 15, 1960, Lana was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Edwards) Covey. Lana was a member of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier. She was employed for the past seven years at the Bonnie Prince, Sydney. Her hobbies were listening to country music, Elvis Presley, cooking, her cats, Storm and Alfie, and being with her family and friends. She graduated from Riverview High School in 1979. Lana is survived by her brothers, Earl (Toni) Mattie, Linwood, N.S., Donald (Marian), Robert (Holly), both of Mississauga, Ont., Basil, Frenchvale, Stewart (Lina), Etobicoke, Ont, sisters, Margaret, Sydney, Ella, Mississauga,Ont., Wanda (Allan), Sydney. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephew, aunts, uncles and cousins. Besides her parents, Lana was predeceased by her brother, Blair, in infancy, and her sister, Treena (2007). Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. Gerard was born in Sydney, a son of the late Roderick and Sarah (MacNeil) O'Handley. Gerard was quick witted and always had a joke on hand. He was an avid reader, outdoorsman, outstanding baseball player in his younger years and all around sports enthusiast. He was a foreman with the Cape Breton and Central N.S. Railway. He leaves to mourn his wife, Rodena (MacLean) O'Handley; sons, Darryl (Tammy), Edmonton, Alta., Christopher (Cindy), Cole Harbour and Kyle (partner Robin), Edmonton, Alta.; grandsons, William and Mason O'Handley, Edmonton, Alberta; siblings, Ann Marie Donovan, Big Pond, John O'Handley, Halifax, Roy (Cecilia), Prime Brook, Kathleen (John Allan) MacNeil, Sydney. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Valerie O'Handley and brother-in-law, Joe Donovan. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. Thursday, December 23rd in St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Boisdale, from where the funeral mass will be held at 12 p.m., with Fr. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. ************************************************************ Marion MacKinnon Born in: Main-A-Dieu, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Grand Mira South, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 20/12/2010 Marion Honora (Lahey) MacKinnon, 96 of Grand Mira South, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Main-A-Dieu, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (O'Neil) Lahey of Main-A-Dieu. She was a member of St. Margaret's parish, Grand Mira South, as well as the Ladies Aid Group. Marion received her elementary education in Main-A-Dieu, high school at Holy Angles, Sydney; secondary education at the Normal College in Truro, Xavier Junior College, Sydney and Dalhousie University in Halifax. She was a teacher and principal for 45 years. She had a life membership in the N.S. Teacher's Union, Nova Scotia School of Administration and Retired Teachers Association. Besides receiving two Doctorate Degrees, Marion was a 4-H leader for 65 years and had the honour of having a 4-H building named in her honour. She was also active in politics and was a die-hard Liberal. Among her many awards, she was very proud of receiving the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Metal for Community Service as well as the Queen Elizabeth 50th Anniversary Gold Medal. She is survived by daughters, Anne (Gary) Miller, Saskatchewan, Hughena (Roger) Deveau, Cheticamp Island, Florence (Eddie) Roper, British Columbia, Alena (Bruce) Turnbull, Truro; sons, Fabian (Helen), Glace Bay, Bryden (Chris), Sydney, Charles (Joan), Frenchvale, Russell (Michelle), Halifax, Campbell, Grand Mira South, Angus (Margaret), Winnipeg; brother, Kenneth Lahey, Main-A-Dieu; 39 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Neil; sons, Joe Pat and Allen 'CP' and daughters, Pauline and Edna. Visitation for Dr. MacKinnon will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Church, Grand Mira South with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late James and Margaret (MacSween) MacKenzie. Ruth was a member of the Salvation Army Sydney Community Church. Ruth was a loving sister to her brother, Ralph and her sister, Blanche. Left to mourn her loss is her companion, Alex Walker and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon and her sister-in-law, Margaret MacRitchie. She died as she lived, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late John A. and Genevieve (Confiant) Wilmot . In earlier years, Frances was a resident of Water St. and New Aberdeen where she was a faithful member of Holy Cross Church and St. John's Church, both in Glace Bay. A stay at home Mom, she devoted her life to her family, which included cooking her famous Sunday dinners, making homemade bread and baking pies and sweets. Frances was a very quiet and kindhearted lady who in her spare time enjoyed going out to play bingo with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters Betty (Cornelious) MacIsaac, Howie Center, Marie (Michael) Keith, Halifax, Gladys (Lawrence) Anderson, BC., Donna Marie (Francis) Andrecyk, Darlene (Dan) LeBlanc, both of Glace Bay; sons, John, BC., Pat, Glace Bay, William (Audrey) Mira, Kevin (Karen) Bridgewater; brother, Dan Wilmot, Sydney. Also surviving is a very special grandson, Blair who Frances raised as her own, 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Edward, son Greg, brothers John, William and sister Mary. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A mass celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
