Born in Sampsonville, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret (Sampson) Sampson. She was a member of St. Peter's parish, St. Peter's. Peggy was a great cook and liked to treat her grandchildren, the tea pot was always on and you never left her house hungry. Peggy worked at the Richmond Villa, Cosy Corner Restaurant and for several different families as a housekeeper. She is survived by her children, Alex, Georgina MacDonald (John), Raymond (Annie May), Claire LeBlanc (Leo), Caren Roberston (Billy), Wilma Martell (Charles), Josephine LeRue (Wayne), Valerie George; daughter-in-law, Jessie Savoie; brother, Theodore Sampson; sister, Lila carter; 25 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Omer, son, Billy, son-in-law, Michael George, sisters, Melinda, Genevieve, Beatrice, Grace, Delrosa, a sister in infancy, brothers, Enos, Patrick, Bernard, Whiley, DY and Martin. After graduating from Riverview Rural High School, she worked at the Tim Hortons on George Street, and then the Department of National Defence in Cold Lake, Alta. Born in Ontario, she was the daughter of Brian and Maureen (Ponee) Adam. Stephanie is survived by her husband, Norman Stockley; one daughter, Lynnea, at home; one sister, Wendy (Carl) Dona, New York. A memorial service celebrating Stephanie's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. During his 12-year battle with cancer, Norman was a faithful witness for Jesus Christ. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Oscar and Irene (Dunbar) Power. He served in Korea with the Canadian Army from 1953-56. He was employed with Municipal Ready Mix where he retired in 1996. He was the biggest fan of the Montreal Canadiens. Norman is survived by his wife, Shirley (Dove); son, Norman; daughter, Brenda (Ian), Sydney; their mother, Florence; grandchildren, Phillip and Andrew Nicholson, Justin, Brandon and Kristan Anthony; sister, Barbara (Keith) Carroll; brothers, James, Gordon (Mary), both of Sydney, Ernest (Mae) Windsor, Ont.; sister-in-law, Gertie Power. Born in New Waterford, Nov. 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph and Annie Mae (Power) MacDonald. He was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard's. Douglas was a retired coal miner who worked in the #12, 16, 18 and Lingan collieries. He was a quiet man, who enjoyed being around his family and friends. He and Marion were never apart - always together, and you rarely saw one without the other. Douglas is survived by the love of his life, wife and best friend, Marion (Campbell) MacDonald; special children, Kenneth Campbell, Matthew Campbell and Sherri Curley (Steve); special grandchildren, Hannah and Garret Curley; sisters, Doreen MacDonald and Esther MacDonald; brother, Bernard; sister-in-law, Sadie, Rena, Mary, Susan Campbell (Rob), Winnie Gatza; brother-in-law, Leo Campbell as well many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Cremation will take place immediately with a family service to follow at a later date. *********************************************** James Patrick O'Keefe Born in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 28/12/2010 Jim went to his eternal home in peace on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital. A lifelong resident of Glace Bay, Jim was the son of the late Patrick Gregory and Anne (Petrie) O'Keefe. After graduating from St. Anne's High School, Jim was employed in the coal industry for over 40 years starting with the Dominion Coal Company and then with Devco in the accounts payable department. Jim was an avid reader, enjoyed walking and traveling. As a young man, Jim served as a Boy Scout leader for several years. He was a Third Degree Member of Council 1953 Knights of Columbus. Jim had a deep faith and served his church at St Anne's parish as usher in earlier years, then as Eucharistic minister, lector, and collections recorder. He also served on Children's Liturgy and various other committees and was happy to receive his five-year diploma in religious education. He was a former member of St. Anne's Men's Club and of the Atlantic Association of Spiritual Exercises Apostolate (AASEA), being Chair of the industrial area of Sydney for several years. In past years Jim also was very active in the Cursillo and Charismatic Renewal movements. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jessie (MacNeil) O'Keefe; daughter, Rose Anne (Mike) Kennedy, New Waterford; sons, Terry (Amy), Port Morien, Tom (Veronica), Glace Bay, John (Alison), Halifax, Rod (Heather), Hampden, Maine; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister Moira (1962), brother Joseph (2010) and brother Gregory, in infancy. In honoring Jim's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A Funeral Mass celebrating Jim's life will be held in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay, on Thursday, Dece. 30 at 2 p.m., with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Born in Sydney Mines, N.S., May 22, 1943, she was the daughter of the late George and Sarah (Gouthro) Gardiner. Thelma loved to travel, enjoyed gardening, above all she loved being with her family. She was a true 'hockey mom' loving every moment of her sons hockey in their younger years. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Survived by her sons, Paul of Moncton, Chris and Jennifer of Halifax, Brian and Kelly of New Glasgow, and Mark of Riverview; sisters, Elizabeth Gordon of Bridgewater, N.S., Lorraine Vautour of Toronto, and Linda and Danny Squires of Ontario; brothers, John E. and Fahey of Sydney Mines, Francis of Sydney Mines, Gerald of Toronto, Brian and Shirley of Saint John, and Michael and Jean of Halifax; six loving grandchildren and one adoring great-granddaughter. He was born July 6, 1933, in Ashfield, Inverness County, to the Late John Dan and Isabell (MacDonald) MacKinnon. Charles was a member of Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh, and a Trustee of Stewartdale Cemetery. He was a heavy equipment operator for over 40 years, retired from Little Narrows Gypsum Plant. Charles was a member of the Iona Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jessie (MacInnis); son, Lawrence (Janet Gillis) MacKinnon; daughter, Noreen (Miles) Rudderham. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lauren (Jennifer) MacKinnon, Shamus (Kate) MacKinnon, Stephanie Rudderham (Martin) Seaboyer; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Seaboyer; sister, Christine MacCalder; brother, Frederick (Mary) MacKinnon and many nieces and nephews. Born in Heatherton, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Sylliboy) Battiste. He was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Stephen was a very talented guitar player who sometimes was referred to as 'Johnny Cash'. He was a carpenter and worked for a time on the Eskasoni Band Council Police Force in the late 70s and early 80s. Stephen also was active in taekwondo and drove the school bus for a period of time. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Peck; daughters, Mary (Robert) Sylliboy, Jane Peck, Janet (Noel) Peck; sons, Glen Peck, Clayton (Elizabeth) Peck, all of Eskasoni; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several godchildren; brother, Fred; Eskasoni; sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Dennis, Eskasoni, Mrs. Annie Brooks, Subenacadie. He was predeceased by a grandson, Gabriel, sisters, Theresa, Helen, Mary Agnes and a brother, William and by his ex-wife Cecilia. She was employed for many of years as a Personal Care Worker with handicapped children, the school for the blind, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital and several other health care facilities over her career.. Besides her mother Helen Burton, she is survived by her sisters Lilly (Leroy) Pyke, North Sydney, Sally Burton, Lorraine Burton, both of Dartmouth, Peggy (Robert) Shaw, Margaree, and her brothers Angus Burton, Cape North, William (Blanche) Burton, Cape North and John (Corinne) Burton, Frenchvale, and also by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Kenneth H. Burton, her brothers Danny, Henry and Victor and her companion Bill Moffatt. There will be no visitation.
