Jennie May Smalley Eleanor Dunford ******************************************************************************************************* James 'Evans' Murphy Born in: New Victoria, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away in: Scotchtown, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 30/11/2010 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Evans Murphy, 83, on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Victoria, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sybil (Petrie) Murphy. He was one of 11 children. Evans was a young man when he started working in the coal mines of Cape Breton and later in life he found his calling as a pipe fitter (Local 682 Pipe Fitters Union). Some of his greatest pleasures in life were his family, fishing, driving to the lighthouse in New Victoria where he was raised. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Church in New Victoria for many years. Evans is survived by the love of his life, Tillie; only daughter, Sheila (Harold) MacLeod, New Waterford; sons, Gary (Connie), Sydney, Bobby (Laurie), Sydney, Stanley, Ontario, Roy, Sydney, Jimmy (Cheryl), England; grandchildren, Bernie, Steven, Robert, Ann Marie, Crystal, Dawne Michelle, Sean, Christian, Rachael, Megan and Jason; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Dawson, Grace, Emily, Jessica and Zachary; sisters, Clair Donohue, New Victoria, Carol (Tony) Mulder, B.C.; brother, Tommy Murphy, B.C. Evans was predeceased by brother, Dellie, sisters, Gerry, Norma, Jackie, Sr. Claudie, Theresa and one sister, Sybil, in infancy. By request, a private family visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass of celebration for Evans will take place Friday, Dec. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with a private burial in Union Grove Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Carmel Centre immediately following the funeral mass. No flowers by request. Manny passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at his residence. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Larry and Frances (Gallant) Smith. Manny loved animals, especially dogs and cats. He was a quite man and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by brothers, Joe (Joan), Frank, Wayne (Donna), Reg 'Red' (Bobby), all of Reserve Mines; sister, Diane (Don) McNeil, Glace Bay; and many nieces and nephews. Derek passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Derek was the son of the late Kevin and Goretti 'Greta' (MacDonald) O'Brien. Derek spent a lot of time writing and reading poetry as well as sketching. He was an avid collector of all types of music. Derek is survived by a brother, Shawn O'Brien. Besides his parents, Derek was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Henry and Frances MacDonald and paternal grandparents, Patrick 'Patty' and Mary O'Brien. In honoring Derek's wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Richard passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 at his residence. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary Anne (Burns) Burton. Richard was a member of Branch #3 Legion and Royal Canadian Navy. He was a member of the Dominion Fire Department retiring after 18 years of service. He enjoyed playing Santa to so many children over his 18 years at the fire department. He was employed with Devco retiring from Phalen Colliery after 30 years of service. Richard was a member of the Men of the Deeps. He was an avid Chicago Black Hawk fan. He was well known in the community and will be missed by family and many friends. Richard will be sadly missed by his loving daughter, Suzanne 'Suzie' (Mark Munroe), Dominion, Stephen (Lisa), Bridgewater; brother, Patrick, Glace Bay; sisters, Leone (George) Briand, Windsor, Ont., Irene Moore, Glace Bay, Claire (Harvey) MacPhee, Glace Bay; three cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah and Emily. Passed away in: Coxheath, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed away on: 29/11/2010 It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Anna Murchison on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010. Anna slipped away peacefully at her home in Coxheath, surrounded by her loving family. Anna was the daughter of the late Colin C. Collier and Rebecca (MacKenzie) Collier. She is survived by Jim, her dedicated and loving husband of 59 years. She is also survived by her daughter, Lee (Laurie) Murchison, Coxheath; sons, Robert (Sharon), Coxheath and Doug (Jane), Stillwater Lake. Anna was also the proud grandmother of Colin, Matthew, Ryan and Meaghan. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Foster, Kingston, Ont. and two special nephews, Alan and Graham Mutch. Anna was very active in her community and will always be remembered for her willing hands and ready smile. She was raised on Burnside Farm in Coxheath and knew the value of hard work. Anna graduated from the Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing and throughout her married life, she lovingly nursed the cuts, bruises and wounded egos of the community children. Anna was a faithful servant of God and a lifelong member of Knox United Church in Blackett's Lake. She was also a life member of the Dr. John Pringle Memorial United Church Guild. Anna was a long time, active member of the Riverview Y's Menettes Club, including a term as president and she was a past president of the Cove Guest Home Auxiliary. Anna will be remembered by many as a very talented artist. Her beautiful paintings grace the walls of many homes, both locally and beyond. She was an avid gardener, loved nature and enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the wonderfully dedicated home care workers and health care professionals who have been so genuine in their concern and unfailing in their care for Anna over these past months. Besides her parents, Anna was predeceased by her brother, Jim Collier and a baby brother in infancy. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4. 2010, at Knox United Church at 2 p.m. under the direction of Rev. Stephen Mills, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment in the Dr. John Pringle Memorial Cemetery in Blackett's Lake, will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Knox United Church Memorial Fund or to the charity of choice. Born on March 3, 1925, she was the last surviving member of her family being predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret (Beaton) Findlay; husband, Alfred; brothers, Bill, Robert, Wenzel, Alex and John and sister, Margaret. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Isabelle Smalley. Jennie was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. She worked for the T. Eaton Company order office in Sydney Mines for many years before transferring to North Sydney where she was the branch manager until her retirement. There will be no visitation or church service as cremation has taken place. A committal service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 in Brookside Cemetery, Rev Peter Rafuse will officiate.
